OPERATOR'S MANUAL Model Series 530 IMPORTANT: READ SAFETY RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY Warning: This unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forestcovered, brush-covered or grass-covered land unless the enginefs exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator.
SECTION 1: FINDING YOUR MODEL NUMBER This Operator's Manual is an important part of your new edger. It will help you assemble, prepare and maintain your edger. Please read and understand what it says. Before you start to prepare your edger for its first use, please locate the model plate and copy the information from it in this Operator's Manual. The information on the model plate is very important if you need help from your dealer or the MTD customer support department. See Figure 1.

• Do not attempt to remove cut material nor hold material to be cut when engine is running or when cutting blade is moving. CAUTION: CUTTING BLADE COASTS ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. operating the edger. Remember, generally a sign of trouble. Stay alert. Watch what you are doing. Use common sense. • Do not operate edger when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or heavy medication. • Never operate the product without good visibility or light. • Keep good looting and balance at all times.
SECTION 4: SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped WITHOUT GASOLINE or OIL. After setting up the unit, service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your unit, Tighten the wing knobs on the handle and pull the cable tie snugly to secure the cable to the lower handle. Carefully trim any excess portion of the cable tie after tightening. See Figure 4.
CHECKING CONTROL THE BLADE DEPTH Blade Depth The blade depth control lever has been pre-adjusted at the factory, Before operating the edger, check the adjustment of the control cable as follows: 1. Disconnect the spark plug wire and move it away from the spark plug. 2. Move the blade depth lever to the lowest edging position then back to the start position on the handle. See Figure 6.
PRIMER CURB WHEEL The primer is used to pump gas into the carburetor. Use it to start a cold engine, but do not use it to restart a warm engine after short shutdown. Refer to the separate engine manual packed with your edger. On some models, the right rear wheel can be adjusted to edge along a curb. The forward handle position is for normal edging operation. Pull the control handle out and move handle towards the rear of the unit to compensate for the height of the curb. See Figure 9. \ Control BLADETI_
6, Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle (rope will pull slightly harder at this point). Let the rope rewind slowly. 7, Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke. Keep a firm grip on starter handle. Return it slowly to the rope guide. NOTE: If the engine fails to start after three (3) pulls, push the primer two (2) times and pull starter rope again.
EDGING Right Rear Wheel \ ALONG CURB (If so equipped) To edge along a curb on units equipped to do so, lower the right rear wheel by moving the curb wheel control lever toward the rear of the unit, pivoting the wheel to the desired depth and releasing the lever. Refer to Figure 9. When edging the grass along a curb, the unit will ride on the two rear wheels and the support roller behind the blade. See Figure 14. The wheel at the front of the unit is not used.

SECTION 10: OFF-SEASON STORAGE Belt Guard The following steps should be taken to prepare unit for storage. Remove the belt guard. The blade can removed for convenience. See Figure 18, Engine _"_" Clean and lubricate unit thoroughly according to the lubrication section. 2. Refer to engine manual storage instructions. 3. Coat edging blade prevent rusting. 4. Store unit in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer.
SECTION 11: TROUBLE SHOOTING Trouble Possible Engine tails to start Dirty air cleaner. Choke not in ON position. Fuel tank empty, or stale fuel.
