3. perform the following actions:
establish the location and contours
10
of the Muscle to be measured and mark by the
Medical Skin Marker (see chapter 1.2) the measuring point above the biggest cross-
section of the Muscle belly;
ensure that the measuring points are marked symmetrically, when measuring the same
Muscle on either side of the body;
check immediately before measuring, by both palpatory test and questioning the
Subject being measured, whether the Muscle being measured is completely relaxed.
COMMENT: In some cases, it may be appropriate to take a photo of the Subject’s body position so that it can
be used as a reminder to reproduce the same body position for the Subject in subsequent
measurement sessions.
2.2.4 Requirements for measuring with the Device
To measure using the Device, the Operator must ensure that:
1. the physical characteristics of the mechanical impulses are identical for measurements, in
the case of repeated and/or comparative measuring:
Tap time,
Tap interval,
Probe diameter
11
2. nothing other than the Probe is in physical contact with the skin surface located directly
over the Object being measured;
3. the Probe is always placed perpendicularly to the skin surface directly over the Object
being measured;
4. the Device is kept as stable as possible within the acceptable range of the measuring
position which is indicated by:
the 3mm wide marker on the Probe,
the green light illuminated through the Probe opening,
the “Hold position!” instruction being indicated on the screen of the Device;
5. the measurement series is performed at the same measuring point;
6. at the moment of exerting an impulse and recording the Muscle response, the Probe does
not slide sideways on the skin surface;
10
For establishing the location and contours of the Muscle to be measured, the Operator generally uses the resistance
to the limb movement to cause contraction of the Muscle being measured and its simultaneous palpation (see
descriptions of Muscle functions in Kendall et al. (2005) ”Muscles Testing and Functions with Posture and Pain“);
11
In case of Special measurements the standard Probe can be replaced with the Probe which has bigger diameter or/and
length. In case you need further information please contact the manufacturer.
