8.2 E-Compass (only NAVIGON 24xx)
The NAVIGON 24xx is equipped with an electronic compass which is
available during navigation in Pedestrian mode.
Thanks to the electronic compass it is possible for the navigation device
to recognise the direction of movement even with very slow
movements. It is not dependent on calculating the direction of
movement from the GPS data.
Another benefit of the electronic compass is that the navigation map
can always be orientated so that it shows the terrain lying in front of
you. When you turn, the visible map section changes accordingly.
8.2.1 Status of the electronic compass
The E-Compass symbol can be seen only during navigation in
pedestrian mode. It can indicate the following states of the electronic
compass:
E-compass OK (in grey): The electronic compass is optimally
calibrated.
Calibration recommended (in yellow): The electronic compass should
be calibrated in order to ensure optimal operation.
Calibration necessary (in red): The electronic compass is not
calibrated and is severely limited in its operation.
8.2.2 Calibrate the E-Compass
The electronic compass must be calibrated from time to time in order to
ensure proper operation. The "E-Compass" status symbol at the top
edge of the screen tells you when this is the case. The symbol can
indicate various states of the electronic compass.
► If calibration of the electronic compass is necessary, tap on
Options
 > Calibrate the E-Compass during pedestrian navigation.
The C
ALIBRATE THE E-COMPASS window opens.
► Follow the instructions on the screen. With the device in your hand,
describe a horizontal eight as indicated on the screen.
The important thing is that the navigation device adopts as many
different spatial positions as possible during the movement. In other
words, the screen should be moved so that it faces several times in
each direction: up, down, to the front, to the rear, to the right and to
the left.
► Keep carrying out these movements until an acoustic signal sounds
and a message appears telling you that the calibration is
completed.
