Meaning 
brackets [ ] 
Indicate optional elements in syntax descriptions. Do not type the brackets when entering 
the command. 
Example: If the command syntax is 
show ip interface [<1-256>] 
you can enter 
show ip interface 
or 
show ip interface 1 
italic text  
Indicates variables in command syntax descriptions. Also indicates new terms and book 
titles. Where a variable is two or more words, the words are connected by a hyphen. 
Example: If the command syntax is 
show spanning-tree stp <1-32> 
1-32 represents a number between 1-32. 
vertical line | 
Separates choices for command keywords and arguments. Enter only one of the choices. 
Do not type the vertical line when entering the command. 
Example: If the command syntax is 
show portchannel {<1-12>|hash|information} 
you must enter: 
show portchannel <1-12> 
or 
show portchannel hash 
or 
show portchannel information
