Nikon Scan supports the following formats:
Format
NEF
Changes to settings in the Tool Chest are not directly ap-
plied to images saved in NEF (Nikon Electronic Image For-
mat). Instead, information about settings is saved separate-
ly in the same fi le as the image. When the image is opened
again in Nikon Scan, these settings will be loaded into the
Tool Chest and applied to the image. This allows settings to
be adjusted without affecting the original image (the “origi-
nal image” is the image acquired from the scanner, modi-
ed according to the settings in effect in the scan window
at the time image was scanned). Note that Nikon Capture
does not support NEF images created in Nikon Scan.
Description
Format Description
TIFF
Use TIFF when saving images for high-quality output or
editing. Images scanned at a bit depth of twelve or more
(twelve, fourteen, or sixteen bits) will be saved as sixteen-
bit TIFF, images scanned at a bit-depth of eight bits as
eight-bit TIFF. Al though the lack of com pres sion will re sult
in larger fi les, a high level of im age qual i ty will be main-
tained. TIFF is sup port ed in a wide variety of ap pli ca tions
on both Windows and Macintosh platforms.
JPEG
JPEG is a good choice for images that will be out put at low
resolution or distributed in elec tron ic form. Im ag es can be
compressed, al low ing more im ag es to be saved in the same
amount of disk space. Note, however, that JPEG com pres sion
results in loss of information that can not af ter wards be re-
stored. This format is not available when saving CMYK im-
ag es or images with a bit depth of sixteen bits per channel.
TIFF
(CMYK)
As above, except that the image is converted to the CMYK
color model when saved. This option is available only
when Nikon CMS is on (Nikon CMS is on by default).
BMP
(Windows
only)
Most Win dows users will be able to view fi les of this type.
This format is not avail able in the Macintosh version of
Nikon Scan, and does not support CMYK, six teen-bit gray-
scale, or six teen-bit RGB.
PICT
(Macintosh
only)
PICT can be viewed on most Macintosh computers, and
supports JPEG compression. This format is not avail able in
the Windows version of Nikon Scan, and does not support
CMYK, six teen-bit grayscale, or sixteen-bit RGB.
