SWITCH ON SAFELY Do not switch the device on when wireless device use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger. ROAD SAFETY COMES FIRST Obey all local laws. Always keep your hands free to operate the vehicle while driving. Your first consideration while driving should be road safety.
Network services Contact your service provider for additional instructions for the use of network services and information on what charges will apply. Some networks may have limitations that affect how you can use network services. Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. Your device may also have a special configuration.
Your Nokia internet tablet provides easy access to the internet through a wireless network connection (WLAN/ Wi-Fi) or Bluetooth connection with compatible mobile phones. Its wide screen and portable size make it optimal for enjoying the web and internet communications away from your laptop or desktop. Touch screen Your device Your device Your compatible WLAN/Wi-Fi access point must be compliant with the IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g standard. Read this user guide carefully before using your device.
The task navigator (1) includes icons that you can tap to open new applications and switch between running applications. To select an option in a menu, tap it. To close the menu, tap another area of the screen. The task navigator contains the following items by default. To change the items, tap and select Settings > Control panel. In Control panel, select Panels. For more information, see the device help. First item: Web browser—Tap to access internet functions such as new browser windows and bookmarks.
The presence icon—your presence status. To change the presence settings, tap the icon. It is visible only after you have created an account for internet call and instant messaging services. The icons are the following: • you are online • you are away • your status is not shown to others • you are offline —the level of display brightness. To adjust the display settings, tap the icon. —the volume level. The more bars there are, the higher the volume.
Home view Every application has the minimise and close buttons (4). When you switch on the device, the home view is displayed. The home view offers you quick and easy access to such product features as clock, internet radio, internet search, RSS feed reader, speed contacts, web shortcut, tutorial and promotion applets. If you tap , the current application is hidden and the underlying application is shown. To bring the minimised application back to the top, tap its icon in the application switcher.
You can control the device in several different ways: tap the screen with the stylus or fingers; or press the scroll key and other hardware keys on the device. For more information on touch screen and hardware key interaction, see the device help named after your product, for example, ‘Nokia N800 Internet Tablet’. Text input methods You can enter letters, numbers, and special characters in several different ways. The virtual keyboards allow you to tap characters with the stylus or your fingers.
The integrated keyboard allows you to use global keyboard shortcuts, as well as shortcuts for application specific tasks. For example, to copy selected content, press [Ctrl]+[C]; and to close the currently open application, press [Ctrl]+[Q]. For more shortcuts, see the device help for text input methods and integrated keyboard. On-screen keyboard 1 2 Full-screen finger keyboard To begin text input with the finger keyboard, tap the text input field with your fingers.
most common special characters are displayed in this area. 8 —Deletes the character to the left of the cursor. 9 —Moves the cursor to the next row or text input field. Additional functions are based on the current context (for example, in the web address field of the web browser, it acts as a go button). 10 —Opens a view, in which you can select from commonly used special characters, symbols, and language character accents. 11 —Closes the on-screen keyboard and handwriting recognition input area.
To define the text input settings, tap , and select Settings > Control panel. In Control panel, select Text input settings. For more information, see the device help. Volume control To adjust the master volume of your device, tap on the status indicator area. To set the master volume, drag the volume slider with the stylus, or tap [+] or [-]. The master volume overrides all other volume settings in the device.
Lock touch screen and keys The touch screen and key lock prevents accidental operation of the device when it is switched on. When the touch screen and keys are locked, the device plays no key tones and accepts no keypresses except for unlocking the touch screen and keys. Depending on the product model, the procedure for locking and unlocking the touch screen and keys can vary: Nokia N800 Internet Tablet—To lock the touch screen and keys, briefly press , and select Lock touch screen and keys > OK.
Nokia N810 Internet Tablet—Your device has an external memory card slot under the desk stand on the front right corner of the device. Your device also includes a nonremovable internal memory card. You can view the content of the internal memory card in Utilities > File manager. The supported memory card formats are as follows: • miniSD card • microSD card (with an adapter) Important: Do not remove the memory card in the middle of an operation when the card is being accessed.
You can back up data to a compatible external or internal memory card and restore it, if necessary. The backup appears as a folder on the memory card. You can also secure the backup with a password. To back up data, do the following: 1. Tap , and select Settings > Backup/Restore > New backup. However, you can make a backup of a list of applications you have installed on your device. During the restore process, your device tries to get the actual application files from the internet and reinstall them.
tap , and select the help command from the menu (usually under Tools). To view and install the available software updates, tap , and select Install updates in Application manager.... In Application manager, select the packages to install and Update. To install all the packages, select Update all. To browse help topics, tap the following: When additional applications are available, for more information, tap , and select the link to access the OS 2008 user site.
Search results. To stop the search at any time, tap on the application toolbar. When you stop a search, you cannot continue it; you must start a new search. Your device 4. To start the search, select OK. Results appear in The search function in your device operates with Boolean AND logic, which means that all search words must match. The more search words and options you set, the more accurate the search result. If you get too few results, limit the number of search words and options.
Your device allows you to access the internet either through a wireless network (WLAN/Wi-Fi) or a mobile phone that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. Note: Time-based charges may apply to the internet connections. Check with your service provider, and adjust the idle times accordingly. Connectivity settings Note: The network may also have idle timers that may cause the internet connection to break, regardless of the idle timers of the device.
following: Connection name—Enter a descriptive name for the connection. Connection type:—Select WLAN (wireless local area network). Select Next to proceed. 2. The device asks whether you want to scan for available WLAN networks. Select Yes to start the scan, or No to skip it.
Select Next to proceed. 3. In Connection setup: Complete, select Finish to save the settings, or Advanced to define advanced settings. Tip: You may need to define advanced settings, for example, if your internet access point requires the use of proxies. Some places, like France, have restrictions on the use of wireless LAN. Check with your local authorities for more information. Features using wireless LAN increase the demand on battery power and reduce the battery life.
Do not create connections to devices using Bluetooth technology that you do not trust. Select a phone To select a phone to be used for internet connection, tap and select Settings > Control panel. In Control panel, select Phone. Although only one device can be selected as a phone at a time, you can pair several devices with your internet tablet. To pair a phone with your internet tablet, do the following: 1. Activate the Bluetooth connection on your mobile phone. 2. In Control panel > Phone, select New.
Dial-up number—Enter the modem telephone number of the internet access point. Connection type:—Select the type of the network over which you want to access the internet. User name—Enter a user name, if required. The user name is usually provided by the internet service provider. To use a packet-switched data service in a cellular network, such as GPRS (network service), select Packet data.
Note: In the offline mode, you cannot use features that require wireless network or Bluetooth connection. To use the features, you must first set the device back to normal mode. If the device has been locked, enter the lock code. Internet connections To enable connections, briefly press the power key, and select Normal mode > OK.
To open the web browser, tap , and select Open new browser window or a bookmark. Before you can connect to the internet, you must define the proper internet connection settings. For detailed instructions, see ‘Connectivity settings’, p. 21. Important: Use only services that you trust and that offer adequate security and protection against harmful software.
To manage the bookmarks you saved in the device, tap , and select Manage bookmarks. In the bookmark manager, you can add, move, copy, rename, delete, and open bookmarks and folders. The bookmark folders are shown on the left, and the bookmarks in the selected folder on the right. To open a folder and a bookmark contained in it, tap the folder and tap the bookmark twice. Browse the web Manage bookmarks Your device may have preinstalled bookmarks and links for third-party internet sites.
To communicate over the internet, you must have an active network connection and registered user accounts and passwords for internet call, instant messaging, and e-mail services with service providers outside Nokia. Google Talk, or SIP account with this device, or create a new account. If you select to create a new Jabber or Google Talk account, you need an active internet connection. You can have multiple accounts for internet call and instant messaging services.
User name—Enter the user name for the account. If you are defining a Google Talk user name, enter the full user name (everything before @gmail.com). indicator area of your device shows the joint presence status for all enabled accounts. Presence status is always the same for all accounts. However, some protocols do not support all presence statuses. Password—Enter the password for the account. Your presence status can be one of the following: Verify password—Enter the password again.
To manage contact information and start communicating with your contacts, tap , and select View Contacts. The main view of the Contacts application displays contact information in two panes: the left pane lists available groups, and the right pane shows the contacts in the selected group and their presence status. To add a contact, select > Contact > New contact.... To group contacts, drag them into the desired groups. You can assign a contact to many groups, and a group can contain many contacts.
If the chat room is protected by a password, Enter password is displayed. To join the protected chat room, enter the correct password, and select OK. To write and send a chat message, tap the text field in the chat toolbar, enter the message, and tap . To add smileys to your messages, tap desired smiley. and select the To view other messages, scroll through the list. The most recent message is always displayed at the bottom of the list. To end the chat, tap .
To end an internet call, tap call summary is displayed. to activate the . When you end a call, a E-mail To send and receive e-mail messages, you must have an active internet connection and a registered e-mail account with a service provider. For the correct settings, contact your e-mail service provider. Create an e-mail account To create an e-mail account, do the following: 1. In the e-mail application, select > Tools > Accounts... > New. The e-mail account setup wizard opens. Tap Next. 2.
Secure connection—Define the security setting for incoming messages. Use secure authentication—Select if you want the system to use secure authentication. Tap Next. 5. If you chose Other as your service provider in step 2, you also need to define the following settings for outgoing details: Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) servers are used when sending e-mail. To send e-mail, you must define the SMTP host name or IP address, which you obtain from the service provider of the connection you use.
When retrieving e-mail, all messages in the outbox folder are sent regardless of the selected account. To retrieve the contents of a selected message, tap the message header. You can set the device to only download message headers. If the mailbox type is IMAP4, you can also download a message without attachments. To open a message, tap the header of the message twice. To disconnect from a mailbox, tap the internet connection icon on the status indicator area, and select Disconnect.
User name and Password—Enter your user name and password. Composing page E-mail address—Enter your e-mail address. The maximum length is 64 characters. Default message format—Select the default message format for your e-mail messages. Modify e-mail account Select opens. > Tools > Accounts.... The e-mail accounts page Select the account you wish to edit, and tap Edit. The account settings dialog opens. Select from the following pages: Account, User info, Incoming, and Outgoing.
Port—Follow the instructions given by your service provider. Use connection-specific SMTP servers:—Select if you want to use connection-specific SMTP servers for sending e-mail messages. To edit connection-specific SMTP server settings, tap Edit. You cannot edit mailbox settings when the connection to a mailbox is open. Inbox folder The Inbox folder contains received messages. The headers of unread messages are shown in bold. Tap the following icons: To search for a message, select Search messages....
Media player With Media player, you can listen to music and other audio files stored on your device or a compatible memory card (if inserted) and audio streams from the internet. You can also watch video clips or watch streaming videos from the internet. Through the media player, you can also stream content from available universal plug and play (UPnP) media servers. Tap , and select My selection> Media player. The application consists of two different views. To access and launch media clips, use Library.

From the available types of media streams, select The supported network streamable audio formats are: AAC, AMR, M4A, MP2, MP3, RA, WAV, and WMA. Streaming performance depends on the bandwidth availability. The supported video file formats are: Internet radio, and select OK to save the channel. The radio channel is added to Media player > Library > Internet radio > Favourite radio channels.

To refresh all feeds or only the selected one, tap , and select the desired option. When refreshing a feed, the RSS feed reader updates it to contain all content available on the server and deletes automatically content no longer available on the server. To stop the refreshing, tap . To set the refresh method of news articles, select > Tools > Refresh feeds. To change the settings of the RSS feed reader, Tools > Settings....
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio navigation system that includes 24 satellites and their ground stations that monitor the operation of the satellites. Any GPS should not be used for precise location measurement, and you should never rely solely on location data from the GPS receiver for positioning or navigation.
You can also pair a compatible GPS receiver with your device using Bluetooth wireless technology. Tips on creating a GPS connection If your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following: • If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal. • If you are outdoors, move to a more open space. • Ensure that your hand does not cover the internal receiver of your Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. For the location of the receiver, see ‘GPS receiver’, p. 42.
Nokia N810 Internet Tablet—Local maps are pre-installed on your device. The map coverage and level of details on the map vary by region. When you open the map application, the map view is displayed. If you have not selected an active map region, a list of available map regions is opened. To browse a map, pan it with the stylus, or tap [+] and [-] icons on the screen to zoom in and out. You can also activate the zoom mode from the application toolbar.
To find addresses, cities, suburban areas, and services stored in the map database, tap on the toolbar. You can search for a location based on the following information: Address—Enter the street address of a desired location. To limit your search to a certain area, enter a postal code or the name of a city. City—Enter the name of the desired city or suburban area. History—Select the desired location from a list of the most recently used locations.
To start navigation, tap the arrow icon on the right side of the display, select Find route from the menu, and enter the destination similarly to finding a location. When a GPS signal is available, your current location is automatically used as the point of origin for navigation. Otherwise, the map application asks you to provide the point of origin. Positioning service, if you have not yet done so. After purchasing, all navigation features become available in the menu.
Application manager About product—View information about your device and end-user licenses. With Application manager, you can install new applications and other extensions from the application catalogues (repositories) on the internet and from the inbox, web links, or File manager. You can also view and update installed packages and uninstall them. Tap Accounts—Define account settings for internet call and instant messaging services.
To open an applet, highlight and activate it. For more information on individual applets, see the device help. GPS location—Configure items related to GPS functionality, and view the details of your current location. Restore original settings Language and region—Select your region and device language. Memory—View the memory status of the device and the inserted memory card. Panels—Modify the content of the task navigator area, and rearrange the contents of the application menu ( ).
Calculator To access the calculator, tap Calculator. , and select Utilities > Note: This calculator has limited accuracy and is designed for simple calculations. Clock Tap , and select Utilities > File manager. The main folders are shown on the left and the subfolders and files on the right. Notes To create, save and send small notes, tap Utilities > Notes.
You can connect your device to a compatible PC with the supplied Nokia connectivity cable (USB). Use the USB cable to transfer files to a compatible memory card and to update the latest software on your device. You can also use Bluetooth connectivity to make a wireless connection to your compatible PC (for example, to transfer files). When the USB cable is connected, a memory card in your Nokia internet tablet is listed as a mass storage device on your PC, and is displayed on your internet tablet.
Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery intended for use with Nokia N800 is BP-5L, and with Nokia N810 BP-4L. These devices are intended for use when supplied with power from the following chargers: Nokia AC-4 and DC4. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the operating and standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace the battery.
