Preface Text conventions This guide uses the following text conventions: angle brackets < > Indicate that you choose the text to enter based on the description inside the brackets. Do not type the brackets when entering the command. Chapter 1 Overview Switch physical features The Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 front panel has buttons and indicators for normal operation. The front panel bezel is removable for access to the CD drive. The switch rear panel has port and power supply access. Front panel Figure 1 shows the Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 front panel view. Table 2 describes front panel features.
Chapter 1 Overview 19 Removing the front panel bezel Remove the bezel for CD drive access. Replace the bezel when you are done. To remove the bezel, follow these steps: 1 On the left front of the unit, locate and open the bezel release flap (Figure 2). 2 Grasp the bezel and slide the bezel to the right until disengaged. 3 Remove the bezel from the faceplate. Figure 2 Bezel removal Figure 3 shows the front panel without the bezel.

To attach the bezel, follow these steps: 1 Align the bezel on the faceplate slightly to the right of the front panel. 2 With the release flap open, engage the bezel onto the track and slide it to the left until it locks into place (Figure 4). 3 Close the release flap.

Chapter 2 Installation Process For proper air circulation, the vents on the front and back of the device should not be blocked or obstructed by cables, panels, rack frames, or other materials. Electrical safety Danger: Use only power cords that have a grounding path. Without a proper ground, a person who touches the switch is in danger of receiving an electrical shock. Lack of a grounding path to the switch may result in excessive emissions.
Chapter 2 Installation Process 27 Installing the switch in a rack Install the Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 in a rack using the four supplied rack mount screws. For rack installation, mounting brackets are shipped attached to the front of the unit. Follow these steps to install the unit in a rack: 1 Identify a rack location and hole spacing alignment.
Chapter 2 Installation Process Supplying power to the switch Supply power after installing the unit in a rack or on a flat surface. Note: Use of both the rear and front power switches is required for full switch operation. Connecting the power supply Connect the power supply using the power cord ordered for this location. To connect the power supply, follow these steps: 1 Connect the power cord to the power receptacle on the unit’s rear panel. 2 Plug the cord into a properly fused outlet.
Chapter 2 Installation Process 29 Terminal requirements To establish a connection with a Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050, the following requirements are necessary: • An ASCII terminal or a computer running ASCII terminal emulation software with the parameters shown in Table 6.
Chapter 2 Installation Process Establishing a console connection Establish a console connection by cabling the unit to a terminal or a computer running a terminal emulator session. To establish a console connection, follow these steps: 1 Using the supplied console cable, connect the terminal to the console port. 2 Power on the terminal and the Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050. 3 To initiate the system connection process, press ENTER on the terminal.
Chapter 2 Installation Process 31 Troubleshooting installation Two situations require troubleshooting: • • The system does not power on correctly. The system powers on but shows no display text for initiating a session with the switch.
