STEP 2 Type the name you want in the text entry box.
CHANGING FIELD TYPES
To change the type of a field, click the Type pop-up menu in the row
corresponding to the field, then choose one of the types below from
the list that appears:
• Text
Holds up to 256 characters (enter a number in the Length text
entry box next to the pull-down menu).
• Numeric
Use to enter integers (for organization, easy sorting, and so
on).
• Date/Time
Converts all date/time information you enter to a consistent
format based on your system settings (although you can
change this setting to show a different date/time format; see
“Date/Time Field Options” on page 3-15).
CHANGING THE LENGTH OF TEXT FIELDS
The default maximum length of any text field depends on the
database type you are using (see “Choosing a Database Type” on
page 5-7); in most cases, it is approximately 256 characters.
Use the Length text entry box for to define a shorter maximum length
for text fields. (The length of Numeric and Date/Time fields is
already limited by the type definition.)
To set a maximum length for a text field:
STEP 1 In the row corresponding to the field you wish to change, click in
the Length text entry box.
The Length text entry box is to the right of the Type pull-
down menu.
STEP 2 Type the desired maximum number of characters for the field in
the text entry box.
Leave the box blank to use the default maximum lengthfor
your database type.
INDEXING FIELDS
Indexing identifies a field for faster searching. It does not affect the
display of fields in any of the views, although it does add to the file
size of the collection.
