Printer model and output type
AnOutputCreationPresetspecifiesthetypeofprintertheoutputshouldbesuitablefor,anddeterm-
ineswherethatoutputshouldthenbesent:toafolder,LPRqueueorWindowsprinter(see"Print
options"onpage1087).
Printer definitions
AprintermodelanditscapabilitiesforConnectaredefinedinaprintermodeldefinitionfile(.OL-prin-
terdef).Connectcomeswithanumberofsuchfiles.However,therearesomanydifferentprintermod-
elswiththeirownsettingsandcapabilitiesthatitissimplyimpossibletoprovidedefinitionfilesforallof
them.
IfthereisnodefinitionfileforyourPostScriptprinteryoumaycreateacustomizedprinterdefinitionfile
yourselfusingthePostScriptPrinterDefinition(PPD)fileprovidedbytheprintermanufacturer(see
"DynamicPPDOptions"onpage1158).
OthercustomizedPrinterDefinitionscanbeobtainedfromUplandOLSupport.Theyneedtobetailor-
madebasedontheinformationthatyouprovideaboutbothyourprinterandyourspecificneeds.
Certainprinterdefinitionfileswillworkwithseveraltypesofprinters(consecutiveversionsofacertain
printermodel,forexample).Notethatthoseprintersmaystillhavedifferentcapabilities.
WhencreatingorselectingPrintPresets,alwaysconsidertheactualcapabilitiesofyourspecific
printer.
Mapping media types to printer trays
AnOutputCreationPresetcanmapmediatypestoprintertrays(seethe"Printersettings"on
page1155dialog).ThisoptionisavailableforAFP,IPDS,PCL,PPMLandPostScriptprintersthatare
configuredforcut-sheetprinting.
Print virtual stationery
ThevirtualstationeryinaPrinttemplate(alsocalled"Media"onpage465)isinfactanimagethatisnor-
mallyonlyvisibleintheDesignerinthebackgroundofthetemplatetomakedesigningatemplate
easier.
IfindicatedintheOutputCreationPreset,theimagewillalsobeprinted.Theoutputcanthenbeprinted
onplainpaperinsteadofpre-printedpaper.Printingvirtualstationeryisalsoveryusefulwhenpro-
ducingPDFoutputfordigitalviewing.
Imposition
AnOutputCreationPresetcantellaprintertoprintmultiplepagesonasinglesheet(Simplex,or
Duplex).ThisiscalledImposition,alsoknownasN-Upprinting.
