Running a job as fast as possible
Number of parallel engines per Print job
TwoormoreenginesofakindcanbecombinedtoworkonthesamePrintjob.Generallyjobswillrun
fasterwithmorethanoneengine,becausesharingtheworkloadsavestime.
However,runningonejobwithmultipleenginesreducesthenumberofjobsthatcanbehandledatthe
sametimebythatkindofengine,becausethereareonlysomanyengines(andspeedunits)available.
Note: Wheneachindividualrecordinajobiscomposedofaverylargenumberofpages,the
Memoryperenginesettingandthemachine'sharddrivespeedareprobablymoreimportantthan
thenumberofMergeengines,sinceonerecordcannotbesplitovermultiplecores(see"Memory
perengine"onpage90).
Target speed per Print job
IfaPrintjobofaspecificsizehasmorethanoneparallelspeedunitassignedtoit,thatmultiplies its
speed,howeveritreduces the number of Print jobsthatcanberunsimultaneously.
WhennootherPrintoutputoperationsrunatthesametime,asinglejobwilluseallavailablespeed,or
themaximumtargetspeedreservedforjobsofthatsize(see"Dividingprocessingpoweroverjobs"
below).
TosetanumberofspeedunitsperPrintjob:
1. OpentheConnect Server Configurationutilitytool(see"ServerConfigurationSettings"on
page82).
2. UnderParallel Processing,gototheOutput Creationtab.
3. SettheTarget speed when running simultaneous jobsforsmall,mediumandlargePrint
jobs.
4. ClickOKorApply.
Dividing processing power over jobs
Thereisanumberofwaysinwhichyoucandivideprocessingpoweroveroutputoperationsofacertain
kindand/orsize.

Byreserving enginesforjobsofacertainkind(andsize,inthecaseofaPrintjob).Notethat
reservedenginescannot be usedbyanyothertypeofjob.Thismeanstherewillbefewer
enginestohandleotherjobs.Consequently,theotherjobsmaytakemoretimeandmayhaveto
wait(orwaitlonger).However,iftheserverreceivesmanywebrequeststhenhavingengines
