1 Taking Pictures To change the shooting settings, refer to “3: Setting Up.” 1 Taking Pictures This chapter describes how to take successive pictures, movies and how to use the flash, zoom, etc.
Focusing on a subject that is not in center of frame (Focus lock) When the subject you want to focus on is not exactly in the center of the monitor and you cannot position the AF target mark on it, you can focus on another point at roughly the same distance (focus lock) and take the picture as explained below. This is called “focus lock.” 1 Taking Pictures In shooting mode, position the AF target mark on the subject you want to focus on.
Focusing on a subject that is not in center of frame (Focus lock) Press the shutter button completely down to take the picture. 1 The purpose of the camera’s auto focus feature is to bring the subject into focus automatically, but under certain conditions, the auto focus may not function effectively. If this happens, focus on an object with high contrast at the same distance as the intended subject (focus lock), recompose your shot and then take the picture.
Changing shooting scene modes l There are 10 shooting scene modes to choose from on this camera. To create the effects you want, simply select the mode best suited to your purpose or shooting condition. 1 Taking Pictures Until you become familiar with the camera, it is recommended that [PROGRAM AUTO] be used to take pictures. Press a (l) in shooting mode. PROGRAM AUTO The scene selection palette for selecting the shooting scene mode is displayed at left of the monitor.
Changing shooting scene modes l Shooting scene modes PROGRAM AUTO P All you need to do is press the shutter button. The camera automatically selects the optimal settings. 1 Suitable for taking a full-frame portrait shot of a person. Ideal for capturing accurate skin tones. Taking Pictures PORTRAIT I INDOOR H Suitable for taking pictures of the subject indoors together with background scene. Picture quality mode can only be set to SQ2 “1280 × 960”, “1024 × 768” and “640 × 480”.
Changing shooting scene modes l CUISINE G Lets you take beautiful pictures of food. The saturation, sharpness and contrast settings are increased to take sharp, vivid pictures of the subject. 1 Taking Pictures LANDSCAPE + PORTRAIT K Suitable for taking pictures of both your subject and the landscape. LANDSCAPE L Lets you take clear and sharp pictures of distant scenery. Creates a very broad depth of field to keep the entire view in focus.
Changing shooting scene modes l SELF PORTRAIT o Enables you to take a picture of yourself while holding the camera. MOVIE N Enables you to record movies. g“Recording movies N” (P. 16) 1 Taking Pictures The zoom function is locked at the W position and cannot be changed while in self portrait mode. Spot metering is not available in this mode.
N Recording movies You can record movies as well as still pictures with this camera. The sound is automatically recorded when recording a movie. 1 Taking Pictures Press a (l) in shooting mode. PROGRAM AUTO The scene selection palette for selecting the shooting scene mode is displayed at left of the monitor. For normal shooting SELECT Press a or c to select [MOVIE] (n), and press the OK/MENU button. GO MOVIE The Movie mode is set.
Recording movies N Press the shutter button halfway and hold. The focus and white balance are locked and the green lamp lights steadily. Taking Pictures Press the shutter button the rest of the way and release it to start recording. 1 While a movie is taken, N indicator lights red. Press the shutter button again to stop recording. When the remaining recording time has been used up, recording stops automatically. To view the movie you have just taken, see g“Playing back movies q” (P. 56).
Using zoom systems This camera has two zoom systems, one is a normal optical zoom system and the other is a digital zoom system. Using the zoom systems, you can change the scope and composition of the picture you are taking. 1 Optical zoom Optical zoom + digital zoom up to 3× up to 12× Taking Pictures Using the optical zoom Press the zoom button in shooting mode. Press and hold the T side of the zoom button to zoom in on a distant object.
Using zoom systems Enabling digital zoom The optical zoom is operated simply by pressing the zoom button, but to use the digital zoom, [DIGITAL ZOOM] must be set to [ON] on the monitor. 1 Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode. F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. Press d to go to the [CAMERA] menu. WB SET CARD CAMERA Press a or c to select the [CAMERA] tab. Taking Pictures The optical zoom magnifies the subject by extending the lens.
Using zoom systems SET CARD CAMERA Press a or c to select [DIGITAL ZOOM]. Press d to go to the digital zoom settings. 1 ESP/n ESP DRIVE o DIGITAL ZOOM OFF R OFF Taking Pictures Press a or c to select [ON] and press the OK/MENU button. The digital zoom is set. Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. SET CARD CAMERA PANORAMA ESP/n DRIVE DIGITAL ZOOM OFF R ON PANORAMA The digital zoom cannot be used when [OFF] is selected. Press the zoom button to operate the digital zoom.
Using flash # The camera is initially set to Auto-flash, but you can select from the following four flash modes according to the shooting conditions. Auto-flash (Factory default setting) The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions. The light from the flash may make the subject’s eyes appear red in pictures taken in dark places. The red-eye reduction flash mode [!] reduces this phenomenon by emitting pre-flashes before firing the regular flash.
Using flash # Press d (#) repeatedly in shooting mode to change the flash setting. 1 The flash settings change in the order of the arrow. After [$], the setting returns to [AUTO]. Taking Pictures P AUTO ! AUTO # $ HQ 2272*1704 The flash charging lamp (#) blinks while the flash is charging. Example: When [#] is set, the display shows # indicator. The flash setting mode display automatically turns off.
K Changing resolution and quality Picture quality modes for still pictures This function lets you select the resolution and quality when recording pictures on the card. It is best to choose the resolution and quality according to the purpose. The camera is preset to HQ mode. Record mode Picture quality Resolution SHQ HQ SQ1 SQ2 Large For making large prints or editing on a computer. For printing in postcard size. For printing 3" × 5" prints.
Changing resolution and quality K Resolution and Compression rate Compression rate and picture quality 1 The quality of the picture depends on the compression rate. Images taken in a low compression record mode are clearer than pictures taken in standard compression record mode. However, lower compression makes the file size larger, reducing the number of pictures that can be stored on the card.

Selecting white balance according to surrounding lighting 0 1 Taking Pictures When daylight, the sun or tungsten lighting is reflected on white substance, the shade of white produced will differ for each. People’s eyes recognize white objects as being white irrespective of the surrounding lighting, but with a digital camera the color needs to be adjusted to suit the situational lighting so that white objects appear white in the picture. This adjustment function is called “white balance.
Selecting white balance according to surrounding lighting 0 Press a or c to select [AUTO], [5], [3], [1] or [>], then press the OK/MENU button. WB AUTO Taking Pictures The selected white balance mode is set. 1 GO SELECT WB > GO SELECT When the white balance mode is selected, the white balance indicators [5, 3, 1, >] are displayed at this point on the monitor. No indication is displayed when [AUTO] white balance mode is set. Indicator P -1.
F Setting Exposure Compensation If your subject is extremely bright or dark, or if the contrast between the subject and the background is high, you can adjust the brightness using the exposure compensation feature. You can adjust the exposure between +2.0 and –2.0 in 1/3 EV (Exposure Value) steps. 1 Taking Pictures Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode. F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press a to select [ F ]. WB Press a or c to select the exposure compensation value.
When brightness of subject and background differs n Taking pictures of a backlit subject may result in darkened faces or other foreground objects. Using spot metering in such situations will ensure that the subject is clear regardless of the background light. 1 Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode. F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. Press d to go to the [CAMERA] menu. SET CARD CAMERA Press a or c to select the [CAMERA] tab.
Press a or c to select [n] and press the OK/MENU button. Spot metering is set. 1 Taking Pictures 32 Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. SET CARD CAMERA When brightness of subject and background differs n ESP/n ESP DRIVE n DIGITAL ZOOM R PANORAMA Take the picture using spot metering. c Position the subject in the center of the frame and press the shutter button halfway. d Compose your shot and press the shutter button all the way to take the picture.
& Taking close-up pictures Use the macro mode when you want to shoot a close up of the subject, for example when taking a picture of a flower. With the macro mode, you can take pictures as close as 20 cm (7.8 in.) to the subject. To shoot even closer, select the super macro mode. This lets you shoot as close as 9 cm (3.5 in.) to the subject. Taking Pictures Press b (&) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [&]. 1 P & When the macro mode has been selected, & is displayed on the monitor.
Taking close-up pictures & % Setting up Super macro mode 1 Select the super macro mode to take pictures as close as 9 cm (3.5 in.) to the subject. The lens will be set to T (Telephoto) and the flash will not operate. Taking Pictures Press b (&) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [%]. The lens is set in the T (Telephoto) position and the camera is set in the super macro mode. When the super macro mode has been selected, % is displayed on the monitor. Using self-timer Y In the self-timer mode, the picture is taken approximately 12 seconds after the shutter button is pressed. You are recommended to stabilize the camera by using a tripod. 1 P Y ON When the self-timer mode has been selected, Y is displayed on the monitor. HQ 2272*1704 Take the picture. 11a Lights Taking Pictures Press c (Y) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [Y ON]. Blinks To cancel the self-timer mode, select [Y OFF].
j Taking successive pictures Taking Pictures Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode. F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. Press a or c to select the [CAMERA] tab. Press d to go to the [CAMERA] menu. WB SET CARD CAMERA 1 This function allows you to take a rapid succession of still pictures at approximately 1 frames per second (approx. 4 pictures in [HQ] mode) by keeping the shutter button pressed.
Press a or c to select [j] and press the OK/MENU button. The successive picture shooting is set. Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. SET CARD CAMERA Taking successive pictures j ESP/n DRIVE DIGITAL ZOOM o j R PANORAMA 1 Taking Pictures Take the pictures. P The successive picture shooting indication is displayed on the monitor. j HQ 2272*1704 11a Press the shutter button fully and keep it pressed.
Panoramic shooting 1 You can take advantage of the panoramic shooting feature with the Olympus xD-Picture Card. Panoramic shooting lets you connect pictures with overlapping edges into a single panoramic picture, using the OLYMPUS Master software contained in the CD-ROM provided. Taking Pictures The panoramic mode is only available when using the Olympus xD-Picture Card. Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode. F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press d to go to [MODE MENU].
Panoramic shooting On the monitor, use the arrow pads to choose the direction you want to take the pictures in. d: Takes pictures from left to right. b: Takes pictures from right to left. c: Takes pictures from top to bottom. Taking Pictures a: Takes pictures from bottom to top. 1 Takes pictures from left to right. Takes pictures from bottom to top. Take the first picture. Focus, exposure and white balance are set by the first picture.
Panoramic shooting Make sure that the edges of the pictures overlap, then take your pictures. 1 Taking Pictures Use the frames at the edges of the screen as a guide when composing your pictures. The first and second shots are taken so that they overlay part A. The second and third pictures are taken so that they overlay part B. Remember the picture in the frame so that you can compose the next picture. A First picture B Second picture Panoramic shooting is possible for up to 10 pictures.
/ Stitching together two pictures This function allows you to position two pictures taken in succession next to each other and store them as a single picture. Once the second picture is taken, the monitor automatically returns to the top menu.
R Recording sound with still pictures This function lets you record sound when taking a still picture. Recording begins about 0.5 seconds after pressing the shutter button and lasts for about 4 seconds. When this function is enabled, sound is automatically recorded after each picture is taken. This is useful for adding an audio comment to the picture just taken. 1 F The top menu is displayed. K MODE MENU Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. Press d to go to the [CAMERA] menu.
Press a or c to select [ON] and press the OK/MENU button. Recording sound with still pictures is set. 1 Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. SET CARD CAMERA Recording sound with still pictures R ESP/n DRIVE DIGITAL ZOOM R OFF PANORAMA ON Taking Pictures Press the shutter button to start the sound recording. When the sound recording is started, position the microphone toward the sound source. Microphone The volume of the recorded sound can be adjusted during playback.
2 Viewing This chapter describes how to play back the still pictures and movies. To change the playback settings, refer to “3: Setting Up.

Enlarging pictures U A picture displayed on the monitor can be enlarged up to 4 times their original size to check the clarity of the picture. Press the U side of the zoom button in playback mode. 3.0* Viewing The picture is enlarged in steps (1.5×, 2.0×, 2.5×, 3.0×, 3.5× and 4.0×) each time the U side of the zoom button is pressed. 2 When a picture is enlarged, you can view different areas of the picture by pressing the arrow pads. Press the G side of the zoom button.

Rotating pictures y Press the OK/MENU button. The rotated picture is saved. Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. 2 Protected pictures cannot be rotated. Cancel the protection setting before rotating a protected picture. g“Protecting pictures 0” (P. Viewing The following pictures cannot be rotated: - movies - pictures edited on a computer - pictures taken with other cameras.
m Displaying pictures one after another This function automatically displays the pictures in order (slideshow). For movies, only the first frame is displayed. 2 The top menu is displayed. m INFO MODE MENU ERASE Viewing Press the OK/MENU button in playback mode. Press a to start the slideshow. Pictures are displayed in sequence at approximately 3 second intervals. Still pictures recorded with sound are displayed at in about 4 second intervals. Press the OK/MENU button to exit the slideshow.
Recording sound with pictures taken R This function lets you record sound to the still pictures already taken, or renew recorded sound. Recording time for each picture is for about 4 seconds. 2 Viewing Play back the picture you wish to add sound to in playback mode. Press the OK/MENU button. m The top menu is displayed. INFO Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. MODE MENU Press d to go to the [PLAY] menu. SET CARD EDIT PLAY Press a or c to select the [PLAY] tab.
Press d to select [START] and press the OK/MENU button. Sound recording starts. SET CARD EDIT PLAY Recording sound with pictures taken R 0 y < R START 2 Viewing If the source of the sound you are recording is more than 1 m (3.3 ft.) away from the camera, the recorded sound may not be very clear. When sound is recorded on the picture with sound, previous sound will be erased and only newly recorded sound will be stored.
q Playing back movies This function lets you play back movies on the camera’s monitor. When the playback mode is activated, the last picture recorded is played back on the monitor. Follow the instructions below to select a picture with n mark and play it back. 2 Viewing Press b d a or c in playback mode to select the picture with the n mark. nH 100-0020 HQ $04.12.18 15:30 20 Press the OK/MENU button. Press a or c to select [RESTART] or [EXIT] from the menu, then press the OK/MENU button. RESTART: EXIT: Plays back the entire movie again. Cancels the movie playback. 2 Viewing The playing time and the total recording time Playing time are displayed on the monitor.
Playing back movies q Creating an index The camera automatically selects nine frames from the movie and stores as still pictures, enabling you to see the content of the movie at a glance. 2 Viewing Select a movie with n in playback mode. Press the OK/MENU button. The top menu is displayed. MOVIE PLAYBACK INFO Press d to select [MODE MENU]. MODE MENU Press d to go to the [EDIT] menu. Press d again to go to the index creation mode. 58 SET CARD EDIT PLAY Press a or c to select the [EDIT] tab.
Playing back movies q Press a or c to select [INDEX], then press the OK/MENU button. INDEX INDEX Once the index is created, it is stored as a new still picture. CANCEL SELECT GO The index is stored as pictures in different record modes from the original movie. Image quality when stored as an index SQ2 (1024 × 768 pixels) SQ2 ( 640 × 480 pixels) Viewing Record mode when the movie was shot.
Playback on a TV You can play back pictures on a TV. Use the AV cable provided with the camera to connect the camera to the TV. Select NTSC or PAL according to your TV video signal system. 2 TV video signal systems Viewing NTSC: North America, Taiwan, Korea, Japan PAL: European countries, China Press the OK/MENU button in the playback mode. m The top menu is displayed. INFO Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. Press a or c to select [VIDEO OUT]. Press d to go to the video signal system selection.
Press a or c to select [NTSC] or [PAL] and press the OK/MENU button. The video signal system is set. Press the OK/MENU button again to exit the menu. SETUP CARD EDIT PLAY Playback on a TV 8 s X VIDEO OUT NTSC G PAL 2 Viewing Turn the camera and the TV off. Plug the AV cable into the A/V OUT jack on the camera. A/V OUT jack Connector cover Plug the yellow plug and the white plug of the AV cable into the TV video (yellow) and audio (white) input jacks respectively.
Playback on a TV Turn the TV on and switch to the video input mode. For information on the video input mode, refer to your manual of the TV. 2 Press the playback (q) button to turn the camera on. Displaying shooting information This function changes the shooting information displayed on the monitor. Editing pictures Creating black and white pictures This function enables you to convert selected pictures into black and white pictures and store them as new pictures. 2 Viewing While in playback mode, display the picture you want to convert into black and white pictures. Press the OK/MENU button. m The top menu is displayed. INFO Press d to go to [MODE MENU]. MODE MENU Press d to go to the [EDIT] menu. Press a or c to select [BLACK & WHITE]. Press d to go to the black and white picture settings.
Editing pictures Press a or c to select [BLACK & WHITE]. Formatting a card Formatting prepares the card to receive data from the camera. This camera may not recognize cards which have been formatted on a computer or another camera. Be sure to format the card with this camera. All data stored on the card is erased when the card is formatted. Protected pictures are also erased. Adjust CCD and image processing functions The Pixel Mapping feature allows the camera to check and adjust the CCD and image processing functions. This should be performed once a year. 4 Printing Pictures Describes how to print pictures taken with the camera in two ways. One is to print using the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) and the other is using a PictBridge compatible printer.
Selecting printing method Printing without using a computer Î You can also use the printing service offered by photo labs. You can have the pictures on the card printed at a photo lab. If you make print reservations (DPOF) with the camera, you can get pictures printed according to the print reservation data. g“Making print reservations <” (P. 105) Î You can also print pictures directly with a PictBridgecompatible printer.
Making print reservations < You can specify pictures and the number of prints on the card. Take the card containing this print reservation information to a DPOF-support photo lab for printing. Turn the printer on and plug the labeled end of the USB cable into the printer’s USB port. The camera’s monitor turns on and the screen for selecting the destination of the USB cable is displayed.

5 Connecting Computer This chapter describes how to transfer pictures stored on the card to computer, and how to use various functions of OLYMPUS Master. For details, refer to the on-line “Help” and the manual of OLYMPUS Master.

Using provided OLYMPUS Master software The CD-ROM provided with the camera includes the OLYMPUS Master application software for image editing and organizing your photos and movies. What is OLYMPUS Master? OLYMPUS Master is for use on computers to view, edit and organize the pictures taken with the digital camera. When this software is installed, the following operations can be performed. You can transfer the image data from the camera or media.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software Installing OLYMPUS Master Check the operating system of your computer before installing OLYMPUS Master. For the compatibility of a new operating system, see OLYMPUS homepage.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software Macintosh Operating System Mac OS 10.2 or later CPU Power PC G3 500MHz or greater RAM 128 MB or greater (256 MB or greater recommended) Hard disk space 300 MB or greater Connector USB port Monitor 1024 × 768 dots or higher, 32,000 colors or higher 5 Connecting Computer Macintosh not originally equipped with a USB port, normal operations cannot be guaranteed on computers when the camera is connected using the USB connectors.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software Windows Insert the CD-ROM into the CDROM drive. The OLYMPUS Master installation window is displayed. If the installation window does not display automatically, double click the [My Computer] icon on your desktop and then click the CD-ROM icon. Select the language to be installed. 5 Connecting Computer 134 Click [OLYMPUS Master]. The QuickTime installation window automatically appears. QuickTime is required to operate OLYMPUS Master.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software Click [Next], the operation message window appears. Operate according to the messages. When the software license agreement window is displayed, review the agreement and click [Agree]. The OLYMPUS Master installation window will be displayed. Operate according to the window messages. When the software license agreement window is displayed, review the agreement and click [Yes]. The serial number is shown on the label pasted on the CD-ROM package.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software If you wish to install Adobe Reader, click [OK]. If you do not wish to install, click [Cancel], and go to step 8. The Adobe Reader installation window appears. Operate according to the window messages. The installation completion window appears. 5 Click [Finish]. The display returns to the initial window. Connecting Computer 136 Select the option to restart the computer immediately and click [Finish]. Remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive and store it.
Using provided OLYMPUS Master software Macintosh Insert the CD-ROM into the CDROM drive. The CD-ROM window is displayed. If the CD-ROM window is not displayed, double click the [CD-ROM] icon on the desktop labeled [OLYMPUS Master]. Double click the [Installer] icon. Operate according to the window messages. The installer of OLYMPUS Master is activated. The installation completion window appears. Click [Finish].
Connecting the camera to computer Use the provided USB cable to connect the camera to a computer. Connect the labeled end of the USB cable to the USB port on the computer. For the location of the USB port on your computer, see the manual for the computer. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB connector on the camera.
Connecting the camera to computer The computer recognizes the camera as a new device. Windows 98SE/Me/2000 When the camera is connected to your computer for the first time, the computer will automatically perform a motion to recognize the camera, and a completion message will be displayed. Click [OK] to complete the message. The computer recognizes the camera as a (Removable Disk).
Activating OLYMPUS Master Windows Double click the (OLYMPUS Master) icon on the desktop. The main menu window appears automatically. Macintosh Double click the (OLYMPUS Master) icon in the “OLYMPUS Master” folder. The main menu window appears automatically. 5 Connecting Computer 140 The first time the computer is activated, the user information window appears, input [Name] and [OLYMPUS Master Serial Number], then select your resident country.

Displaying camera images on computer Transferring and storing the camera images on a computer Storing camera images on a computer. In the OLYMPUS Master main menu, click the Images) button. The list showing all the images on the card in the camera is displayed.
Displaying camera images on computer Click the [Browse Images Now] button. The image transferred into the browse window is displayed. To return to the main menus, click [Menu] in the browse window. The card access mark on the camera’s monitor blinks red while the images are being transferred. Never open the battery compartment/card cover on the camera, or disconnect or connect the battery or AC adapter. Doing so may cause damage to the data in the card.
Displaying camera images on computer For Windows Me/2000/XP 1 Click the [Eject Hardware] icon displayed on the control strip. 2 Click the displayed message. 3 When the [Safe to Remove Hardware] message is displayed, click [OK]. For Macintosh 1 Drag and drop the [NO_NAME] (or [NO_NAME] icon) on the desktop to [TRASH]. 2 The icon showing the connection with the computer turns off. 5 Connecting Computer 144 Unplug the USB cable from the camera.
Viewing still images/movies In the OLYMPUS Master main menu, click the Images) button. (Browse The Browse Window is displayed. Double click the thumbnail of the still picture you want to view. Thumbnail The display switches to view mode and the picture is enlarged. To return to the main menu, click [Menu] in the browse window.
Viewing still images/movies Viewing movies In the browse window, double click the thumbnail of the movie you want to view. The display switches to view mode and the first frame of the movie is displayed. Click the playback button display to start the movie.
Printing images There are many printing menus for the photos, indexes, postcards, calendars, etc. This section describes how to print photos. In the OLYMPUS Master main menu, click [Print Images]. The Print Menu window is displayed. Click the (Photo) button. The Photo Print window is displayed. Click [Settings] in the Photo Print window. Select the layout and size of the photos to be printed. Connecting Computer The Printer Settings dialog window is displayed. Set to the printer as required.
Printing images Select the thumbnail of the picture you want to print and click [Add]. The selected picture is displayed on the layout as a preview. Set the number of prints. 5 Connecting Computer 148 Click [Print]. To return to the main menus, click [Menu] in the Photo Print window.
Transferring and storing camera images to a computer without using OLYMPUS Master application This camera is supported by USB Mass Storage Class Device Standards. Therefore, you can transfer and store images by connecting the camera to a computer with the provided device specific USB cable without using OLYMPUS Master application. The environment of the connectable computer is as follows. Windows: Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP Macintosh: Mac OS 9.0-9.

Avoid using the flash for extended periods. Do not take apart or modify the camera. Never attempt to disassemble the camera. The internal circuits contain high voltage points which could cause serious burns or electrical shock. Do not let water or foreign objects inside the camera.
Precautions Battery handling precautions Follow these important guidelines to prevent batteries from leaking, overheating, burning, exploding, or causing electrical shocks or burns. DANGER This camera uses a lithium ion battery specified by Olympus. Charge batteries with the specified charger. Do not use any other chargers. Never heat or incinerate batteries.
Precautions Olympus lithium ion batteries are intended for use only with Olympus digital cameras. To find out whether your camera can be used with these batteries, read your camera’s manual. Always charge lithium ion batteries when using them for the first time, or if they have not been used for a long period. The battery may become hot during prolonged use. To avoid minor burns, do not remove it immediately after using the camera.
Precautions Do not leave the camera pointed directly at the sun. This may cause lens or shutter curtain damage, color failure, ghosting on the CCD, or may possibly cause fires. Do not push or pull severely on the lens. Before storing the camera for a long period, remove the battery. Select a cool, dry location for storage to prevent condensation or mold from forming inside the camera.

Lamps, indicator, and mark The green lamp, flash stand-by/flash charging lamp, battery check indicator and card access mark, which are displayed on the monitor, indicate the following depending on whether they are on, off or blinking. Camera maintenance Cleaning the camera Exterior Wipe gently with a soft cloth. If the camera is very dirty, soak the cloth in mild soapy water and wring well. Wipe the camera with the damp cloth and then dry it with a dry cloth. If you used the camera at the beach, clean it with a cloth that has been soaked in clean water and well wrung. Lens Blow dust off the lens with a commercially available hand blower. Apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to some lens cleaning paper and gently wipe the lens.
AC adapter (sold separately) In addition to the lithium ion battery provided with the camera, you can also use the specified AC adapter (sold separately). An AC adapter is useful for time-consuming tasks such as picture downloads. Use only the specified AC adapter (sold separately), and connect in the sequence as shown below.
