Insulating Your Crawlspace Floors
Installation Instructions
1. Install the insulation so that it maintains
continuouscontactwiththesuboorabove.Any
gapsbetweentheoorandtheinsulationcan
allowairmovementthatreducestheinsulation
R-value.Makesuretheinsulationexpandstoit's
fulllabelthickness(anyareasofcompressionwill
alsocauseareductionofR-value).
2.Theinsulationshouldbeinstalledalltheway
backattheendofeachjoistrunsothatittouches
thebandjoist.Youwantcompletecoverageunder
thehouse.Therewillusuallybeanarrowjoist
spaceonthewallsthatrunparalleltothejoist.The
insulationshouldbecuttotthisspace.
3. There are often both pipes and wires in crawl
spacesunderoors,andoccasionallytherewill
beajunctionbox.Youmayneedtocutorsplitthe
insulationtotitaroundelectricalwiring,boxes
and drain pipes.
4.Likewise,theinsulationwillhavetobecutor
splitsothatittsaroundcrossbraces.Donot
leavevoids(uninsulatedareas)oroverlycompress
the insulation.
5.Tosupporttheinsulation,usenylonbandingor
metalinsulationsupports.Woodfurringstripscan
also be used.
6. Installa4-to6-milpolyethylenegroundcover
tokeepgroundmoisturefromseepingupinto
thespace.Alljoints/seamsinthepolyshouldbe
overlappedaminimumof6"andsealed.Theground
covershouldrunupthecrawlspacewall,onall
sides,aminimumof6"andbesealedtothewall.
NOTE: Donotleavefacedinsulationexposed.
Thefacingsonkraft-facedinsulationwillburnand
must be installed in substantial contact with an
approvedinteriornishassoonastheinsulation
hasbeeninstalled.Facingmustbeinstalledin
substantialcontactwithanapprovedceiling,
oororwallmaterial.Keepopenameandother
heatsourcesawayfromfacing.Seepackage
