Insulating Your Floors
Installation Instructions
1. Install the insulation so that it maintains
continuous contact with the subfloor above. Any
gapsbetweentheoorandtheinsulationcan
allow air movement that reduces the insulation
R-value.Makesuretheinsulationexpandstoits'
fulllabelthickness(anyareasofcompressionwill
alsocauseareductionofR-value).
2. The insulation should be installed all the way
backattheendofeachjoistrunsothatittouches
thebandjoist.Youwantcompletecoverageunder
thehouse.Therewillusuallybeanarrowjoist
spaceonthewallsthatrunparalleltothejoist.The
insulationshouldbecuttotthisspace.
3.Thereareoftenbothpipesandwiresincrawl
spaces under floors, and occasionally there will be
ajunctionbox.Youmayneedtocutorsplitthe
insulationtotitaroundelectricalwiring,boxes
and drain pipes.
4.Likewise,theinsulationwillhavetobecutor
splitsothatittsaroundcrossbraces.Donot
leave voids (uninsulated areas) or overly compress
the insulation.
5.Tosupporttheinsulation,usenylonbandingor
metalinsulationsupports.Woodfurringstripscan
also be used.
6. Installa4-to6-milpolyethylenegroundcoverto
keepgroundmoisturefromrisingupintothespace.
Alljoints/seamsinthepolyshouldbeoverlappeda
minimumof6"andsealed.Thegroundcovershould
run up the crawl space wall, on all sides, a minimum
of6"andbesealedtothewall.
NOTE: Donotleavefacedinsulationexposed.
Thefacingsonkraft-facedinsulationwillburnand
must be installed in substantial contact with an
approvedinteriornishassoonastheinsulation
hasbeeninstalled.Facingmustbeinstalledin
substantialcontactwithanapprovedceiling,
floor or wall material. Keep open flame and other
heatsourcesawayfromfacing.Seepackage
