,. **In the rare case where the steering wheel buttons are intermittent or the radio sometimes functions by its self the enclosed capacitor can be added to solve this issue.** .. If you are experiencing the issue stated above, the 0.47uF capacitor included with the INTERFACE can be connected between the INTERFACE's white and black wires. Connect one lead of the supplied capacitor to the INTERFACE's white wire and the remaining lead to ground.

SWI-RC Assistance Guide This guide is designed to assist with all aspects of the SWI-RC, from describing the functions of the individual wires in the harness, to how to troubleshoot issues with programming. Locating the Vehicle Control Wire Locating 5 volt Resistive Control Wire (Version 3, 8, or 9) White wire Applications 1) Without the factory radio connected: a. Using a multimeter, attach one test lead to ground and the other to the suspected wire. Make sure that the SWI or the factory radio is not connected for this test.
Locating 12 volt Resistive Control Wire (Versions 1, 2 or 4) Green Wire Applications 1) Using a multimeter set to test DC voltage, attach the black test lead to ground and the other to the suspected wire. a. With the factory radio connected: i. Have the SWI disconnected and the ignition on. You should read 0 volts when not pressing buttons. When pressing buttons, you should get a DC voltage reading for every button press.
get a very low voltage (a few millivolts) reading on the wire that tests as the correct SWC wire. In these cases (for example if it were to happen in a 2003 to 2007 GM Truck), it may be necessary to isolate the wire from the steering wheel (cut the wire at the column) and tie the green wire from the SWI interface directly to the side of the control wire coming from the steering wheel. You will want to tape off the side (do not use) that leads away from the steering wheel to prevent issues.

Original Style SWI Harness Wire Description Purple Loop: When intact, it provides 5 volts to the white wire’s circuit. In some instances the installation instructions will have you manipulate this connection for specific applications. Leave as is unless vehicle specific instructions indicate otherwise. Black: Ground wire. Connects to vehicle ground. In some cases it may be necessary to connect directly to the vehicle chassis to secure a good ground. Blue: HVAC Data Output wire (used with version 4).
Version 2 Style SWI Harness Wire Description Purple Loop: When intact, it provides 5 volts to the white wire’s circuit. In some instances the installation instructions will have you manipulate this connection for specific applications. Leave as is unless vehicle specific instructions indicate otherwise. Black (X 2): Ground wire. Connects to vehicle ground. In some cases it may be necessary to connect directly to the vehicle chassis to secure a good ground.
Version 3 Style SWI Harness Wire Description Purple Loop: When intact, it provides 5 volts to the white wire’s circuit.
Troubleshooting Walkthrough The PAC SWI-(RC, PS, JACK, X) interfaces are comprised of two different sections, the input section and the output section. The input section “reads” the information from the vehicle’s control wire (or wires), and the output section outputs steering wheel commands to the aftermarket radio based on the setting of the Radio Selector Dial and how it was programmed.
5. After programming the version number, the next step is the button learning procedure. During the steering wheel button learning procedure, did the SWI interface appear to program all buttons successfully? If the answer is YES, move on to step 5. If the answer is NO, continue to step 4a. a. First, turn on the ignition and confirm that the LED flashes the correct amount of times to indicate the version number that the interface was programmed for in step 3.
SWI Output Troubleshooting 1. 2. The SWI interface programs successfully and appears to be operational but does not control the aftermarket radio. When pressing buttons on the steering wheel, does the LED flash (indicating it is receiving the command)? If the answer is YES, move on to step 2. If the answer is NO, it appears that there is an issue with programming (click here for detailed programming information).
5. Some radios have an internal steering wheel programming menu. These radios will need to be programmed to the steering wheel controls after the SWI interface has been successfully programmed to the vehicle. This is generally found on radios that will have a 3 wire steering wheel control input (SW-A, SW-B and SW-GND). Check the radio’s owner’s manual for additional information. Some radios have the steering wheel control input turned off as the default setting.
Button Learning Procedure Walkthrough Once installation and version number programming of the SWI-RC has been completed, you must assign a command to each of the steering wheel’s audio control buttons. Various brands of radios offer different commands that they are able to recognize through the steering wheel control input. Additionally the type of signal that different brands of radios look for, and the steering wheel control input connection type, will vary.
Example using SWI-RC to an Alpine radio in a vehicle that has SWC buttons for volume up & down, track up & down and mode. 1. To begin the learning sequence, press and release the programming button and the LED should illuminate and stay on. 2. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button that you would like to program to slot 1 in the flowchart for the appropriate radio (volume up) for 2 seconds. a.
6. 7. i. The CAN interfacing is sending a command to the SWI when you roll the jog dial. With each click, there is a brief voltage spike being sent. In some cases, the reading is too quick for the SWI to learn the value and it ends up learning the resting (no buttons pressed) value. When you do a brief and steady roll of the dial, it should remain visible to the SWI for long enough for it to correctly learn that value.
