5. After programming the version number, the next step is the button learning procedure. During the steering wheel button learning
procedure, did the SWI interface appear to program all buttons successfully? If the answer is YES, move on to step 5. If the answer is
NO, continue to step 4a.
a. First, turn on the ignition and confirm that the LED flashes the correct amount of times to indicate the version number that the
interface was programmed for in step 3. Once confirmed, press and release the programming button. The LED should light red and
remain illuminated for 7 seconds, then it will time out and flash several times (how many times will be dependent on the version
number it was programmed for). Did the LED remain illuminated for 7 seconds? If the answer is YES, move on to step 4c. If the
LED immediately starts flashing without pressing any steering wheel control buttons, try disconnecting the control wire from the SWI
interface to the car harness (leaving only the red and black wires from the SWI interface connected to the vehicle harness) and with
the ignition on, press and release the programming button again. Now does the LED turn on and remain on for 7 seconds? If the
answer is NO, move on to step 4b. If the answer is YES, you will need to use the information in “i” through “iv” below to test your
control wire connections.

ii. For help locating the control wire for version 1, 2 or 4, click here.
iii. For help locating the control wire for version 6 or 7, click here.
iv. For help locating the control wire for version 5, click here.
b. The LED continues to flash once you enter button learning mode even though the version number is correctly programmed and only
the red and black wires from the SWI are connected to the radio harness. If you are using the SWI-RC and the version number that
you are instructed to use is version 8, continue to section 4b-i, if not, skip to section 4b-ii.
i. Try programming for version 3 (version number programming discussed on step 3). There was a small amount of
SWI-RC (did not occur with any of the other SWI interfaces) that exhibited suggested programming for version 8, but
needed to be programmed for version 3 to operate. If the issue persists, move to step 4b-ii.
ii. Check that you have sufficient voltage on the red wire and a sufficient
ground on the black wire. For testing purposes try relocating your
ground to the vehicle chassis and power to a different wire. In some
instances, it may be necessary to use the aftermarket radio’s remote
turn on to trigger a standard SPDT relay to provide power from the
battery 12 volt wire to the radio. See diagram (Fig. 1) for details. If
you have eliminated the possibility of a power or ground issue, you will
need to replace your steering wheel interface.
c. After turning on ignition and pressing and releasing the program button, the LED
stays on for 7 seconds then times out. With the ignition on, press and release the
programming button to enter learning mode again. The LED should illuminate. Within 7 seconds (otherwise the interface will time
out), press and release the Volume Up button on the steering wheel. As soon as the Volume Up button was pressed, the LED should
immediately turn off and as soon as you let go of the Volume Up button, the LED should immediately turn back on and illuminate
for another 7 seconds waiting for the next button function to be learned. If Volume Up successfully programmed in this manner,
continue to section 4d. If not, you will need to further test the control wire connections using the information provided in “i”
through “iv” below”.

d. Following the steps in section 4c allowed volume up to successfully program. The next step is to attempt to program all of audio
steering wheel control buttons. Keep in mind that once you start the button learning mode, you will only have 7 seconds to program
the next button, or to skip the next button in the button learning sequence (by pressing and releasing the program button 1 time). If
at any point the 7 seconds between presses is exceeded, the learning sequence will “time out” and the buttons that you have
programmed will be learned. If you did not complete the learning sequence (learning all the programmable buttons), you will need
to start the entire learning sequence again (starting with pressing and releasing the program button and beginning with volume up).
