Example using SWI-RC to an Alpine radio in a vehicle that has SWC buttons for volume up & down, track up & down and mode.
1. To begin the learning sequence, press and release the programming button and the LED should
illuminate and stay on.
2. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button that you would like to program to slot 1 in the flowchart for
the appropriate radio (volume up) for 2 seconds.
a. The light should immediately turn off once each of the buttons are pressed and will
immediately illuminate again once the button is released.
3. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button that you would like to program to slot 2 (volume down) for
2 seconds.
a. Notice that functions 3, 4 and 5 (mute, preset up and preset down) are not going to be
programmed to a button, so the functions will need to be skipped.
4. Within 7 seconds, press and release the programming button 1 time to skip the function that
corresponds with slot 3 (mute).
a. The LED will flash twice to indicate it skipped the operation and then illuminate solid again
indicating it is ready for the next function to be learned.
5. Within 7 seconds, press and release the programming button 1 time to skip the function that corresponds with slot 4 (preset
up).
6. Within 7 seconds, press and release the programming button 1 time to skip the function that corresponds with slot 5 (preset
down).
7. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button you would like to program to slot 6 (source) for 2 seconds.
8. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button you would like to program to slot 7 (track up) for 2 seconds.
9. Within 7 seconds, press and hold the button you would like to program to slot 8 (track down) for 2 seconds.
a. Note that there are still 6 commands left in the programming order. Wait 7 seconds and the interface will time
out and the LED will flash (flashes the programming version number, then will flash rapidly) to let you know it
has exited the learning mode.
10. Plug the 3.5 mm steering wheel control input jack from the SWI-RC into the radio’s steering wheel control input jack and test
the steering wheel control functions through the radio.
a. If this information was followed for your specific application and you are experiencing problems with
programming, refer to the troubleshooting walkthrough section (please click here).
Programming Tips:
1. Program with the vehicle running. This will insure a stable voltage and lessen the possibility of operational issues.
2. Press and hold the steering wheel control buttons for a few seconds for each button during the learning procedure. It is
possible that pressing a button too quickly will cause the SWI to not learn the correct value and cause operational issues.
3. Once the learning procedure has started, there is only 7 seconds between each individual button press. If you continue to
hold the steering wheel command that is being programmed (the LED remains off), the time out timer will not start again
until you let go of the steering wheel control button. Once the LED comes on solid again, the 7 second timer has started
counting down again however, this does not work when pressing the program button to skip a feature. When pressing the
programming button to skip, the LED will immediately flash 2 times and then return to being lit solid (thus starting the 7
second countdown timer again).
4. If the learning procedure times out at any time during the button learning process, you will not need to reprogram the
version number again but you will need to start the button learning procedure from the beginning again.
5. For Audi applications that use the rotary “click” style steering wheel controls that are not easily programming, try the
following two procedures (these applications will also require the SWI-CAN, SWI-CAN2 (depending on the application), or
the C2R-AUDI):
a. Try learning the volume up, down and track up and down commands by rotating the applicable control one “click”
in the appropriate direction when you get each of those specific commands during the button learning procedure.
If that does not properly program the functions, move to step 3b.
b. Try learning the volume up, down and track up and down commands by performing a quick and consistent roll of
the rotary “click” style steering wheel control during the learning procedure for each of those specific commands.
