CHAPTER 1 Setting Up Wi-Fi® Network Connections » Key Term Wi-Fi network A wireless local area network (WLAN) based on the 802.11 standard. » Key Term Wireless access point A network device with an antenna that provides wireless connections to a larger network. » Key Term SSID The name that identifies a Wi-Fi network. If a network does not broadcast its SSID, you must get the SSID from the network administrator in order to connect to the network.
CHAPTER 1 [ ! ] Before You Begin Complete the steps in the Getting Started guide in your Wi-Fi card package to install the Wi-Fi software on your handheld. Your handheld must have at least 7MB of free memory to install the Wi-Fi software. Tip You can conserve battery power by removing the Wi-Fi card or turning off Wi-Fi when you are not planning on using it for an extended period. Tip No confirmation tone when you insert the card? In Preferences, go to Sounds & Alerts and turn on the System Sound.
CHAPTER 1 Setting Up Wi-Fi® Network Connections 3 4 5 In the Applications/Home screen From the Wi-Fi pick list, select On. The Wi-Fi card searches for available networks that publish their network names and tries to connect to one of them. This may take a few moments. To connect to a different network, select it from the network pick list. If the network you want does not appear in the list, you need to set it up on your handheld.

Visit www.palmOne.com and look for the Accessories link for your handheld. Removing the Wi-Fi card Wi-Fi turns off automatically when you remove the Wi-Fi card from the expansion slot. 0 1 Push lightly against the card with your thumb. Push 2 Slide the card out of the expansion slot.

Select Next. Select from the list of available networks, and select Next again. b. If the network does not appear in the list, select Other and enter the network name (SSID). Then select OK. NOTE If you select a network that is not available, your handheld tries to connect to any available network.
CHAPTER 1 [ ! ] Before You Begin Make sure you get the following information from your network administrator: • WEP key(s), key type, and key index (if needed) OR • WEP passphrase Setting Up Wi-Fi® Network Connections Setting up a WEP-encrypted network connection Follow these steps to set up a Wi-Fi network with WEP key encryption. For corporate networks, check with your network administrator to get the required settings.
CHAPTER 1 Tip WEP key encryption ranges from 40-bit to 128-bit. 40-bit keys are often called 64-bit, and 104-bit keys are sometimes called 128-bit because the other 24 bits are automatically assigned. Setting Up Wi-Fi® Network Connections 4 Select the Key Type pick list and select the network’s WEP key type: 40-bit hex Key format is a 10-digit hexadecimal number. Key Type pick list 40-bit ASCII Key format is a five-character string. 40-bit passphrase Key format is a variable-length string.

CHAPTER 1 Setting Up Wi-Fi® Network Connections Tip You can view the Wi-Fi signal strength on the Command toolbar by drawing the Command stroke. The Wi-Fi signal strength indicator appears at the far right of the Command toolbar. If you have an active VPN connection, a lock icon appears next to the signal strength indicator.
CHAPTER 2 Synchronizing Using a Wi-Fi® Connection [ ! ] Before You Begin Make sure the computer you want to synchronize with has the following: • Windows OS • Palm® Desktop software with HotSync® Manager turned on Need to synchronize but can’t get back to the office? Once you set up the Wi-Fi® network connection and prepare your computer, you can synchronize your handheld anytime your PC is turned on and accessible via a network, and you are within range of a Wi-Fi access point.
CHAPTER 2 Synchronizing Using a Wi-Fi® Connection Preparing your computer Before you can synchronize wirelessly, you need to set up your Windows network computer for network synchronizing. 0 1 2 Click the HotSync Manager icon task bar. From the HotSync Manager menu, select Network if it is not already selected. in the lower-right corner of the Windows Network is selected.

Click the Network tab and select your username if it is not already selected. NOTE If your username does not appear, you need to add it to your computer by synchronizing your handheld using a local, direct connection (cable/cradle), or infrared or Bluetooth® communication. CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account » » Key Term VPN (Virtual private network) is a secure authentication service that uses methods such as Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) to allow you to go through your company’s firewall (security layer) and access the company’s internal network. The VPN software included with your Wi-Fi® card requires access to a VPN server running the PPTP protocol.
CHAPTER 3 [ ! ] Before You Begin To set up a VPN on your handheld, you need the following information from your network administrator: • Your VPN username • Your VPN password • The VPN server name or address Also, ask your administrator about the following: • Is encryption required for VPN data? Using a VPN Account Working with VPN accounts on your Tungsten T5 or Tungsten E2 handheld ™ Before you can use VPN for Wi-Fi® network connections, you need to set up a VPN account on the handheld.
CHAPTER 3 Did You Know? The VPN client software that comes with your Tungsten T5 or Tungsten E2 handheld automatically stores your password so that you don’t need to enter it each time you connect. Using a VPN Account 3 Set up the VPN account: a. Enter a name for the account. b. Enter your VPN username. c. Select the Password box and enter your VPN password. d. Select OK.

Send All: To VPN When checked, all TCP/IP data goes to the private network.
CHAPTER 3 Tip Select Tips in the VPN Preferences to view information about using VPN accounts, including why a VPN connection can fail. Using a VPN Account Cont’d. Query DNS When checked, the handheld gets the domain server name from the VPN server. Uncheck the box if you need to enter a static DNS address. IP Address: Automatic When checked, the handheld gets the IP address from the private network. Uncheck the box if you need to enter a static IP address.
CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account Connecting to your VPN using your Tungsten T5 or Tungsten E2 handheld You can connect to your VPN using the VPN Preferences screen. Some applications may allow you to open the VPN Preferences panel or may have settings that specify whether VPN is used by that application. To connect to a VPN, you must have an active network connection.

NOTE Check your VPN connection by drawing the Command stroke to display the Command toolbar. Then verify that a lock icon appears in the Wi-Fi signal strength indicator at the far right of the toolbar.
CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account 4 Select Disconnect VPN when you are finished. [ ! ] IMPORTANT You cannot delete or edit a VPN account when you have an active connection. Other VPN accounts cannot be connected until this account is disconnected. You can, however, add, edit, or delete other VPN accounts.
CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account Using Auto-Connect on the Tungsten E2 handheld On the Tungsten E2 handheld, you can select Enable Auto-Connect in the VPN Preferences, as shown below. When you make a Wi-Fi network connection, your VPN connection will be automatically established using the currently selected VPN account. 0 1 Go to Applications 2 Select the VPN Account pick list, and then select your account. 3 , select Prefs , and then select VPN. Select Enable Auto-Connect, and then select Done.
CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account Switching between VPN accounts on your Tungsten T5 or Tungsten E2 handheld If you have set up multiple VPN accounts, you can switch from one to another if no VPN connection is currently active. 0 1 Go to Applications 2 , select Prefs , and then select VPN. Select the account from the VPN Account pick list.

Select the account, and then select Edit.

CHAPTER 3 Using a VPN Account Disabling and enabling VPN on your Tungsten T3 or Zire 72 handheld You can disable VPN whenever you don’t want to use your VPN account for network connections. For example, you may find it faster to browse the public Internet without connecting through your VPN account and private LAN. Or you may need to disable VPN in order to send personal email if this activity is not permitted by your private LAN security. 0Y 1 Go to the Home 2 , and then select VPN.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi Network Connections ® This chapter provides instructions for conserving battery power, checking Wi-Fi® signal strength, and viewing or editing your Wi-Fi network connection settings. Turning Wi-Fi on or off You may want to turn Wi-Fi off if you are not planning on using it for an extended period of time, but want to leave the card in the expansion slot. As long as Wi-Fi is turned on, the Wi-Fi card uses a small amount of power even when you are not connected to a network.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections NOTE A green LED indicator on the front of the Wi-Fi card glows steadily if the card is properly inserted in the SDIO slot and Wi-Fi is turned on. The LED indicator blinks when the connection to an access point is being negotiated, and turns off when Wi-Fi is turned off. Viewing signal strength You can monitor the strength of your Wi-Fi signal when you are connected to a network. If the signal is weak, expect the connection to be unreliable.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections Cont’d. You can also view Wi-Fi signal strength on the Command toolbar by drawing the Command stroke. If a VPN connection is active, a lock icon appears next to the Wi-Fi signal strength indicator. Select the Wi-Fi signal strength indicator in the Command toolbar to display WiFi status. You can also display the preference settings for Wi-Fi or VPN, by selecting the Wi-Fi Prefs or VPN buttons.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections Viewing Wi-Fi connection information You may need to view connection information in order to provide your IT administrator with your MAC (media access control) address or other information. 0 1 In the Applications/Home screen 2 Select Info. , select Prefs , and then select Wi-Fi.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections Conserving battery power You can extend the battery power by turning on the Conserve Power option and restricting roaming. When the Conserve Power option is off, the Wi-Fi card uses full power to roam continuously and search for closer access points. This can improve Wi-Fi performance, but shortens battery life. Constant use of the Wi-Fi card can deplete the handheld battery quickly.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections 4 Select the Roaming pick list and select a setting. Very Weak Begins roaming only when the signal is very weak. This setting is most conserving of battery power. Weak Begins roaming when the signal is weak. Moderate Begins roaming when the signal is moderate. Pick list 5 Select OK.
CHAPTER 4 Managing Wi-Fi® Network Connections Changing the timeout period You can control how long the handheld remains connected to a Wi-Fi network when it is not actively sending or receiving data. By default, the handheld remains connected for three minutes or until the display powers off as specified in the Power Preferences. 0 1 In the Applications/Home screen 2 Select the Timeout box. , select Prefs , and then select Wi-Fi. CHAPTER 4 [ ! ] Before You Begin If you are joining an existing peer-to-peer network, you need to know the network SSID. If you are initiating a peerto-peer network, simply make up your own network SSID and tell the others who will be joining your network. » Key Term Peer-to-peer (ad hoc) network Two or more computers or devices that communicate directly with each other using Wi-Fi, without going through a wireless access point or a wired network.

Why can’t I synchronize my handheld wirelessly? • Check the signal status to make sure you are connected to your wireless network. See Viewing signal strength. • Make sure the PC selected for Network in the Modern Sync Preferences is your PC.

There are 14 allocated channels within this band. The Wi-Fi card by palmOne supports channels 1 through 11. Wi-Fi® card by palmOne Your Wi-Fi® card by palmOne operates in the Industry Scientific and Medical (ISM) band and supports channels 1 through 11. Channels 12, 13, and 14 aren’t supported.
