Definition of Terms Dolby Digital This is a digital audio compression technology that was developed by Dolby Labs. This technology breaks up a music signal into 5.1 channels for recording and playback: left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround and subwoofer (0.1 channel). Because this technology makes it possible to store a large amount of audio data on a disc efficiently, it is used to record audio in multiple languages, in stereo or monaural.
