2 Installation and Preparation 2 Installation and Preparation A 2.1 Drum cartridge The supplied drum cartridge includes starter toner (toner cartridge is not supplied). • When using the unit for the first time, please use the supplied drum cartridge. CAUTION • Read the instructions before you begin installation. • Do not drop the drum cartridge. • Hold the drum cartridge with both hands when removing or installing. 1.

Hold the rear cover open lever ( ), and then pull open the rear cover. If you want to reduce toner consumption, set the toner save setting to ON (feature #482).

2.8.3 Wireless LAN connection Important notice When installing using a USB cable connection, a message may appear during the software installation. This is normal and the software will not cause any difficulties with your operating system. You can continue the installation with no problem. This kind of message is displayed: • For Windows XP users “The software you are installing for this hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.
2.8.4 Other information To modify the software (To add or uninstall each component) You can select the components to install or uninstall anytime after the installation. 1. Start Windows and insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2. [Modify] [Modify Utilities]. Then follow the on-screen instructions. To uninstall the software [All Programs] [Panasonic] [Start] the unit's name [Uninstall]. Then follow the onscreen instructions.
3 Basic Operations 3 Basic Operations 3.1 Operating the unit's panel 3.1.1 Selecting the operation mode for touch panel models You can select the desired mode by tapping one of the following buttons: COPY FAX SCAN PRINT QUICK JOB – /COPY : Select this mode when using the unit as a copier. – /FAX : Select this mode when using the unit as a fax machine. – /SCAN : Select this mode when using the unit as a scanner. – /PRINT : Select this mode when using the unit as a printer.
3.2.1 Standard input tray • • • • • • – Paper with foreign objects attached, such as tabs or staples – Paper that has dust, lint or oil stains – Paper that will melt, vaporize, discolour, scorch or emit dangerous fumes near 200 ℃, such as vellum paper. These materials may transfer onto the fusing roller and cause damage.
3.2.1 Standard input tray A 2. Pinch the right recording paper guide ( ), then slide it to outside (the left recording paper guide will move by itself). Pinch the centre of the recording paper guide ( ), then slide it to match the paper size mark. A B 3. Before loading a stack of paper, fan the paper to prevent paper jams. 4. Load the paper, print-side up ( ). Important • Push down to lock the plate ( 38 Operating Instructions ) in the standard input tray, if necessary.
3.2.1 Standard input tray A B • If necessary, slide the recording paper guides to adjust the width to the size of the recording paper. • Make sure that the recording paper is under the paper limit mark ( ), and the paper should not be loaded over the snubbers ( ). A B Note • If the centre of the recording paper guide is pinched too much, it could cause a paper feeding error. 5. Insert the standard input tray into the unit, lifting the front part of the tray. Then push it completely into the unit.
3.2.1 Standard input tray • If the standard input tray does not close, the plate in the standard input tray may not be in the locked position. Push the paper down and make sure that the paper is laying flat in the standard input tray. • When setting only a few sheets of recording paper, we recommend using the multi-purpose tray. • If the recording paper shifts while removing the input tray from the unit, move it back into place in the input tray. Shifted paper may cause a paper jam.

Open the document cover ( ). 2. Place the document FACE DOWN on the scanner glass ( ), aligning the top left of the document with the corner where the mark is located.
3.3.2 Using the automatic document feeder • To make a portrait copy, set the original in portrait direction. To make a landscape copy, set the original in landscape direction. 3. Close the document cover. Note • • • • Confirm that there are no documents in the automatic document feeder. ( ) Place the original onto the scanner glass gently. To avoid malfunction, do not press down too firmly. If the original is a book thicker than 15 mm, do not close the document cover.
3.3.3 Document requirements • When feeding certain types of document (for example, if back of the page is not clean) through the automatic document feeder, it is possible that dirty marks may be left on the original document. To prevent this, we recommend feeding the document one page at a time when using the automatic document feeder, or to use the scanner glass. • The total height of the documents when laid flat, must be less than 7 mm.

5 Printing 5 Printing 5.1 Printing from Windows applications You can print a file created in a Windows application. For example, to print from WordPad, proceed as follows: 1. Open the document you want to print. 2. Select [Print] from the menu. 3. Select the unit's name as the active printer. • When mode restriction (feature #154) is activated, enter the department code in the printer settings using [Job Type] beforehand (page 68).

Divide the document into sections. "INNER COVER OPEN" • The inner cover is open. Close it. "KEEP COPYING" • Copying has stopped due to some existing problem (Example: a lack of recording paper or a recording paper jam). See the other displayed message instructions to continue copying.

If you do not remember it, run the Secure Print application, then delete all print jobs. Click the [Setup] button, then enter the new password into the [Setup] dialogue. I cannot find my computer or print job in the display of the unit when using the following feature. – Secure Print – Proof Print • Printing from your application is not finished.
11.4.4 Copier 11.4.4 Copier Problem Cause & Solution The unit will not make a copy. • You cannot make a copy during programming. Make the copy after programming. • The document was not set properly (page 43). • Recording paper is not loaded or the unit has run out of paper. Load paper (page 36). Letters on the copied documents are not clear. • The original document is too dark or too light. Change the contrast (page 87) and try again. The copied documents are too dark and cannot be read.
11.4.5 Fax Problem Cause & Solution I cannot receive the whole document (LAN supported models only). ( ) • The fax to email address (feature #452) is activated. In this case, only faxes within the fax memory capacity (page 182) can be received. Deactivate the feature, then ask the other party to resend the document. I cannot receive documents automatically. • The receiving mode is set to TEL mode. Set to FAX ONLY mode (page 108) or TEL/FAX mode ( ) (page 109).
11.4.6 Using a USB memory device Problem Cause & Solution I cannot hear a dial tone. • The telephone line cord is connected to the [EXT] jack on the unit. Connect to the [LINE] jack (page 28). • If you use a splitter/coupler to connect the unit, remove the splitter/coupler and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the unit operates properly, check the splitter/coupler. • Disconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known working telephone.

Insert a supported USB memory device (page 142). • You tried to print different file formats onto 1 page. Activate the continuous print setting (page 76). • The file may be broken. Try viewing the file on your computer. • The file is too large or is in an unsupported format. Use a supported file format (page 74).
