Touch-Screen Navigation The touch-screen allows for quick, easy and convenient navigation for all applications. Throughout the User Guide, you are instructed to use the following tap or touch navigation methods: Selecting Items - Tap: quick tap & release on an item on the screen Your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l uses a “resistive touch” screen which responds best to a hard pointed object or the tip of your fingernail, as opposed to a tap of the soft skin of an outstretched fingertip.
Display Reader Function Menu = tap in the top row of the screen to display the Reader Function Menu at the top of the screen. Keyboard Functions Multi-language characters – Touch & hold = touch & hold on a key to display alternative characters. Set Up Wi-Fi Network Since many features require a Wi-Fi connection, we recommend you set up your Wi-Fi network now. 1. Select Settings from the Application Quick Launch Bar, tap Network. 2. Turn Wi-Fi on by tapping the Wi-Fi is off/Turn on Wi-Fi. 3. The device automatically scans and list all local Wi-Fi Networks found. A indicates secure networks that require login name/password to connect. 4. Tap the desired network to which you want to connect, enter the Network Password if applicable. 5.
Overview of Buying & Downloading Books to Device Connect to Wi-Fi network through Settings >Network. On HOME screen, tap Update to populate the Bookstore row. On HOME screen, tap Bookstore or Shop B&N on Application Quick Launch Bar. Browser displays Barnes & Noble website. OR Shop and purchase eBooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers, or get free samples. The first time, select I have a B&N account to enter your existing Barnes & Noble account login information (email & password).
Barnes & Noble BOOKSTORE The top Bookstore row on the Home screen displays Barnes & Noble’s current bestselling and newest released eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers. This eMedia can be purchased directly from the Barnes & Noble online bookstore directly through your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l . IMPORTANT: In order to connect with your Barnes & Noble online account, the Date and Time must be set correctly according to your location.

Purchase an eBook 1. In the Home screen, to be sure you are viewing the most current media on the Barnes & Noble website tap Update above the Bookstore row. 2. Tap on any book cover to display the book details, including pricing, sample availability, and a synopsis. 3. Tap BUY NOW. 4. Tap OK in the confirmation screen; the book is added to your Barnes & Noble online account. 5. Use the Get Books feature to download them from your Barnes & Noble account into your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l (pg. 21). 6.

Shopping directly on the Barnes & Noble website allows you to view full details about a book, including Editorial and Customer Reviews, along with the synopsis.

IMPORTANT: In order to connect with your Barnes & Noble online account, the Date and Time must be set correctly according to your location. eBooks downloaded from Barnes & Noble to a Macintosh computer are saved in an unsupported .pdb format. If you copy the .pdb formatted eBooks into your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l , they will not be recognized. You should always use Get Books to download eBooks directly from your Barnes & Noble download library into your p an d i g i t a l n o v e l .
If you import eBooks, the first time you open them you are presented with an ‘unlock’ message. Enter the credit card name and number that was used to purchase the book. “When you have multiple issues of the same eMagazine and/or eNewspaper, only the most recent issue appears in My Library. Tap on the shown issue to display a list of all available issues, and then select the issue you want to open.” Manage Books Use this feature to delete media from your My Library bookshelf. 1.
To unlock and open a borrowed book, the recipient may be required to provide the default credit card name and number that is registered with their Barnes & Noble account. The book can only be loaned for 14 days. Only one copy of a book can be read at a time. Therefore, the lender won’t have access to the book until after it has been returned from the recipient. Loan a Book 4. In the My Library screen, tap Lend/Return. 5. Tap Lend books in the pop-up window. 6.
Returned books: Status is changed to “Returned” but remains available for purchase later. Purchased books: The borrowed book is removed from My Library. Use the Get Books feature to download your purchased book (pg. 21). Bookshelves Use Bookshelves to create and manage personalized bookshelves into which you want to save your downloaded media (i.e., Short Stories, Drama, etc.). The number of books within a bookshelf is displayed in the right column. Add New Bookshelf 1.
Quick Open another Bookshelf Tap the bookshelf name in the upper right of any bookshelf screen to display the list of all bookshelves, tap the desired bookshelf to open. Delete Shelf 1. In the My Library screen, tap Bookshelves. 2. Tap next to the bookshelf you want to delete. 3. Tap Delete. Check Subscriptions You can check for newest issues of active eMagazine or eNewspaper subscriptions whenever desired. To get non-active subscriptions and purchased single issues, use the Get Books feature (pg.
Methods that can be used to launch the Reader: Select Reader from the Application Quick Launch Bar; the last read media file opens. Tap on a media icon in the Home or any Bookshelf screen. Most books contain a Table of Contents with active chapter links, allowing you to simply tap the desired chapter/page that you want to view. However, Free Sample books do not have active links; use the Go To feature in the Reader to jump to a desired page in a sample book.
Slide & release the power button quickly to turn sleep mode on and off. When in sleep mode, the Wi-Fi disconnects from the local network, but will automatically reconnect when out of sleep mode (may take up to 30 seconds to reconnect). Play Music in Background while Reading You can play music in the background as you read media files. 1. Tap Music in the Application Quick Launch Bar, and then select the desired audio files to play. to minimize the Music Play screen; the music continues to play as 2.
Bookmarks/Notes/Highlights When desired, you can bookmark pages, add notes to pages, and highlight text on pages, and then later quickly return to those pages. Bookmarks 1. To bookmark a page, tap the upper right corner of the page. A symbol is displayed, indicating the page has been bookmarked. 2. To display the list of all bookmarks you have created in the media you are currently viewing, display the Reader Function Menu, tap Bookmarks. 3. To return to a bookmarked page, tap tap View.

Night Read Night Read switches the background to black with white text, allowing you to view media without emitting as much light as the normal view mode. Normal view mode is white background with black text. Night Read view mode is black background with white text. 1. While viewing a media page, display the Reader Function Menu, tap Night Read. 2. To switch back to normal view mode, tap Day Read. The “read mode” is remembered for each media file that you have read.
WEB Use the Web feature to access the Internet and ‘surf the web’ and visit your favorite web sites. The Web feature requires a connection to a Wi-Fi network. If you have not set up your Wi-Fi network, do so now using the instructions on page 39. While viewing the browser, you can turn your device to rotate the orientation of the screen from vertical to horizontal. Some websites have videos that use flash and the p a n d ig i t a l n o v e l does not support flash video. Go to a Web Site 1.
ZOOM Web Page Some websites have been designed specifically for electronic mobile devices, such as your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l . These types of websites automatically fit to screen when they are displayed. To set the desired zoom for websites designed for mobile devices, use the browser Menu2>Settings>Default zoom. To zoom standard web sites, finger slide on the screen to display the magnifiers in the lower right corner.
Menu page 2: Back Displays previously displayed web page Forward Returns to web page that was displayed before tapping Back to display the previous web page. Select text Select text on the current web page and paste into browser entry fields (i.e., URL address field, form fields) Settings More Set multiple browser settings, including: Page Content Privacy Security Advanced Returns to Menu page 1 Bookmarks You can bookmark web pages that you visit and want quick access to later.

Browser Windows Up to the last 8 websites you have visited are cached and listed in the Windows screen allowing you to quickly return to them. Open New Window 1. In an open browser window, tap Menu, tap Window. 2. Tap New Window and then enter the new web site address. 3. Tap in the top URL entry field to enter the desired web site address. Switch Windows 1.
3. Tap into the URL entry field to display the keyboard. 4. Touch and hold in the top URL entry field to bring up the Edit text options. 5. Tap Paste. 6. Tap Go to go to the new web page. Browser Settings You can set browser settings to enhance your Internet browsing. On the browser window, tap Menu, tap Settings.
Clear form data (clears all the saved form data) Clear location access (clears location access for all websites) Security Settings Set the following options pertaining to the security level when logging into secure web pages: Remember passwords (saves your user names and passwords for all websites that require that information when establishing accounts with them) Show security warning (alerts you of a problem with website’s security) Clear passwords (clears all the saved usernames and passwords)
Settings>Calibrate Touch Screen If you notice that the touch screen is not responding accurately, you may need to re-calibrate the touch screen sensors. 1. Select Settings from the Application Quick Launch Bar, tap Calibrate. 2. Tap Calibrate to perform the calibration. 3. When the pop-up windows appear, use a pointed device to accurately tap the “+” in the designated spots on the screen. 4. If calibration is successful, you can resume normal use. If unsuccessful, repeat the calibration again.
On the Select a Wi-Fi Network screen, tap at the right of Wi-Fi is on. The Wi-Fi icon on the top of screens indicates the status as follows: = Connected = Not connected, Wi-Fi turned ON = Not connected and Wi-Fi turned OFF (power saver) Settings>Subscriptions You can set times for automatic daily checks for newest issues of active eMagazine or eNewspaper subscriptions. You can also check your subscriptions manually whenever desired using My Library> Check Subscriptions (pg.26).
Settings>Support Select Settings from the Application Quick Launch Bar, tap Support. The information listed on the Technical Support Information screen may be required if you contact Technical Support. Settings>Reset Defaults Resetting the defaults changes general settings back to the factory pre-set defaults (i.e., slideshow preferences). WARNING! All Barnes & Noble account information will be deleted. Adobe DRM Activation records will be deleted. All personal settings will be deleted (i.e.

Use the control panel to pause/play, play previous/next audio file, and use the volume control panel to adjust the volume. You can also use the volume buttons on the side of your device to adjust the volume. To return to the Music List screen, tap Menu. Tap to minimize the Music Play screen. The music continues to play as background music for the Reader and photo slideshows if you have selected Enable Music with Slideshow (pg. 40).
Return to Music List In the Playlist screen, tap Artist or Title to return to the Music List screen. VIDEOS The video file format supported: MPEG4, 720 * 480 (D1) resolution, H.263 and H.264 Methods that can be used to add videos to the internal memory: Import video files from an SD card Save video files from email attachments Download videos from online video websites While viewing videos, you can turn your device to rotate the orientation of the screen from vertical to horizontal. Play Video 1.
Stop Video Tap the bottom of the screen area to display the video navigation bar, tap to stop the video and go back to the Video Gallery. Delete from Video Library In the Video Gallery screen: 1. To delete all videos, tap Select All, and then Delete Selected. 2. To delete selected videos, tap on the desired video files you want to delete, tap Delete Selected.
Photo Function Menu Options Back Zoom Rotate Dim Previous Next Slideshow Return to Photo Gallery Enlarge the photo up to 4X Rotate photo 90 degrees clockwise; tap multiple times until desired orientation is achieved. Rotated version is saved.
To disable this function: 1. Select Settings from the Application Quick Launch Bar, tap Photos. 2. Tap next to Enable Music with Slideshow to disable it. Set Wallpaper You can assign any photo from the internal memory or SD card as your display wallpaper. 1. Select Photos from the Application Quick Launch Bar. 2. If you have an SD card inserted, tap Internal Memory in the Select Media Source pop-up window. 3. In the Photo Gallery screen, tap Set Wallpaper. 4.

After setup, if you are unable to connect to a free email account, check with your email provider to make sure their servers support free accounts on Post Office Protocol (POP) or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Add Additional Accounts: 1. Select Email from the Application Quick Launch Bar. 2. In the Inbox, tap Folders, tap Accounts, tap Add Account. 3. Tap into the Email address field to launch the keyboard, enter your email address. 4.
Set up Juno Platinum or Turbo Account Your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l does not support free juno email accounts. Platinum or Turbo Juno accounts must use the following data when setting up your email account. Incoming Mail Server Settings POP server: pop.juno.comnovel Outgoing Mail Server Settings SMTP server: authsmtp.juno.com Email Inbox 1. Select Email from the Application Quick Launch Bar. 2. If you have only one email account, the Inbox opens immediately. 3.
OR Tap Add Contacts to select the recipient(s) from your Contacts list. 3. Tap in the Subject entry field to enter your desired subject title. 4. Tap in the message area to enter your personal message. 5. If desired, tap Add Attachment to attach a file. 6. Tap Send when ready to send your email. 7. You can save your message without sending it by tapping Save Draft. To retrieve draft messages, in the Inbox, tap Folders, tap Drafts. 8. If you do not want to send or save the message, tap Discard.
3. The server settings are automatically populated based on your email account provider (i.e., Gmail, yahoo, etc.). However, if necessary, you can make changes to the server settings as desired. Delete Email Accounts If you have multiple accounts, and you delete the account designated as the default account, the next email listed is automatically set as the default. 1. Select Email from the Application Quick Launch Bar. 2. On the Email Accounts screen, tap Settings.
6. If you want the alarm to alert repeatedly on specific days, tap the desired days. above 7. Tap Save. next to the alarm to activate it. 8. Tap 9. Repeat steps 2-8 to set up more alarms. 10. Tap to close the Add Alarm screen. Set Alarm Volume The alarm volume only affects the default tone alert. If you select Music the volume is controlled through the Music settings (see pg 42). In the Alarm screen, tap to adjust the volume of the tone.
Dates with a colored triangle in corner have scheduled events. Add Event Only one event can be scheduled per date. If you schedule another event on the same date, it replaces the first. 1. On the Calendar screen, tap on the date to which you want to add an event. 2. In the Add Event screen, tap in each entry field to enter the desired event information tap Save. 3. Tap to return to the Calendar screen. Edit Event 1. On the Calendar screen, tap on the date with the event you want to edit. 2.
Delete Events Delete Single Event 1. On the Calendar screen, tap on the date with the event you want to delete. 2. In the Edit Events screen, tap Delete. 3. Tap to return to the Calendar screen. Delete Multiple Events 1. On the Calendar screen, tap Manage Events. 2. Tap next to each event you want to delete tap Delete Selected. 3. Tap to return to the Calendar screen. SEARCH You can search for text within media file names or text within eBooks in the Bookstore row on the HOME screen. 1.

If you import eBooks with eBook cover images, the image file must be named the same as the eBook files. For example, myebook.pdf, myebook.jpg. File names should NOT include special characters; otherwise they are not recognized by the device. The first time you open an imported book, you are presented with an ‘unlock’ message.
CONTACTS You can create an address book of your personal contacts, including personal notes as desired. Select Contacts from the Application Quick Launch Bar. Add New Contacts 1. In the Contacts screen, tap Add Contact. 2. In the Add Contact screen, tap in each entry field to enter the contact information. 3. Tap Save. You can also add contact email addresses directly from received emails (pg. 51). Edit Contacts 1. In the Contacts screen, tap on the desired contact name to edit. 2.
GAMES The following pre-loaded games are provided for your entertainment: Solitaire Link Up To view the game rules and instructions, launch the desired game, tap Help. USER GUIDE The full p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l User Guide is included as a book in your My Library bookshelf. You can view it by tapping on the User Guide book cover. Once open, you can use the standard Reader functions to search and navigate through the document in the same manner as your downloaded media files.

Adobe® eBooks Adobe® eBooks is designed for reading and managing eBooks and other digital content transferred from Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). To view Adobe® eBooks, you need a free Adobe account and Adobe Digital Editions software. Register your account and then download the software on the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.
If an Adobe eBook has an expiration date, it will also expire on your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l . If an eBook is returned in ADE before it expires, the next time you connect your pa n d i g i t a l n o v e l to your computer, ADE updates the status of the returned eBook on your p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l , and you won’t be able to read it. Delete Adobe eBooks 1. Select Adobe® eBooks from the Application Quick Launch Bar. 2. Tap next to the eBook(s) you want to delete, tap Delete.
6. In the Language setup screen, tap Save with English selected (multiple languages will be available in future firmware upgrades). 7. In the Date/Time screen, if necessary, tap in the Time Zone, Date, and Time fields to set the correct time for your location. IMPORTANT: In order to connect with your Barnes & Noble online account, the Date and Time must be set correctly according to your location. 8. Tap Save. 9. The My Library is automatically updated and then the HOME screen is displayed.

BOOKSTORE (Barnes & Noble) Q: Why can’t I connect to the Barnes & Noble website to update the Bookstore even though my device is connected to a Wi-Fi network? A: Check your Date & Time, as they MUST be set correctly for your location in order to connect with the Barnes & Noble website.
Q: How do I download books to my p a n d i g i t a l n o v e l after I purchase them from Barnes & Noble? A: You can tap Get Books on the My Library screen, and then select the books you want to download. Or you can tap on a book cover in the My Library screen, and tap OK to confirm the download. Q: Why am I not able to see all my Barnes & Noble media when I use Get Books? A: There are multiple reasons this may occur, which are noted on page 22.
READER Q: Can I view media files in either vertical or horizontal orientation? A: Yes, digital media (eBooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers) or photos. To automatically switch viewing orientation, simply turn your device while viewing these types of media. Q: Can I change the size of the displayed text? A: Yes. Tap at the top of the screen to display the Reader Function Menu, tap Font Size. Tap the desired font size from the drop-down list. Q: Can I easily jump to a specific page? A: Yes.
WEB Q: Do I need a Wi-Fi adapter to connect to the Internet? A: No. The Wi-Fi adapter is built-in to your pandigital novel. Q: Can I have multiple browser windows open at the same time?
