32 sts and 40 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stocking st.
INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size.
If changes are necessary for larger sizes the
instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers
for each size are shown in the same color
throughout the pattern. When only one
number is given in black, it applies to all
sizes. For ease in working, circle all numbers
pertaining to your size.
With A, cast on 36 (40-44-44-48) sts
loosely. Divide sts evenly onto 3 needles
as 12 (13-14-14-16) sts on rst and third
needles and 12 (14-16-16-16) sts on
second needle. Join to begin working in
rnd, placing marker on rst st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K1. P1) ribbing 3 (3-5-5-
7) times more. Do not break A. Join B.
With B, work 2 (2-2-2-3) rnds of (K1. P1)
ribbing. Break B.
With A, work 4 (4-6-6-8) rnds more of (K1.
P1) ribbing.
Break A. Join C.
With C, proceed as follows:
Next rnd: *P1. K3. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd until work from beg measures
3 (3-4-4-5)” [7.5 (7.5-10-10-12.5) cm].
Next rnd: Knit to last 3 (3-3-3-4) sts on
rst needle. Slip last 3 (3-3-3-4) sts onto
beg of 2nd needle. Slip rst 3 (3-3-3-
4) sts from 3rd needle onto end of 2nd
needle. Divide 18 (20-22-22-24) sts onto
2 needles and leave for instep. Break C.
Join A.
With A, proceed across 18 (20-22-22-24)
sts as follows:
Heel: Next row: Purl.
1st row: (RS). K17 (19-21-21-23). W&T.
2nd row: P16 (18-20-20-22). W&T.
3rd row: K15 (17-19-19-21). W&T.
4th row: P14 (16-18-18-20). W&T.
Cont as established until there are 4 (4-6-
6-8) ‘unwrapped’ sts, ending on a WS row.
Next row: (RS). K5 (5-7-7-9). W&T.
Next row: P6 (6-8-8-10). W&T.
Next row: K7 (7-9-9-11). W&T.
Next row: P8 (8-10-10-12). W&T.

Contrast A Muslin (55008) 1 ball
Contrast B Red (55705) 1 ball
Contrast C Grey Marl (55045) 1 ball
Set of 4 size U.S. 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to
obtain gauge. Stitch marker.
