UNDERSTANDING SMARTLOCK T he SmartLock feature receives and processes data sent by broadcasters, or other program providers, that contain program content advisories. When programmed by the viewer, a TV with SmartLock can respond to the content advisories and block program content that may be found objectionable (such as offensive language, violence, sexual situations, etc.). This is a great feature to censor the type of programming children may watch.
USING SMARTLOCK - SETTING UP THE ACCESS CODE S martLock allows parents to block out or “censor” any channels they think children should not watch. A channel blocked by the SmartLock control cannot be viewed until a correct access code is used to unlock the channel for viewing. First let’s set your SmartLock access code: .. .. . REVIEWING THE SMARTLOCK SETTINGS A review screen is available to remind you which ratings you have blocked and which Block Options you have selected. BEGIN Press the MENU button on the remote to show the on-screen menu. REVIEW should be highlighted. The ratings that you have blocked will appear on the right side of the menu. If you have blocked specific sub-ratings, such as V for Violence in the TV-PG category, these blocked subratings will not appear in the review.
VIEWING BLOCKED PROGRAMMING V arious on-screen messages will appear when someone tries to view blocked programming. Shown here are examples of these messages. The message is determined by how the current programming is blocked. You may view the blocked programming and turn off the SmartLock feature by entering your access code. TURNING ON THE DYNAMIC NOISE REDUCTION (PICTURE) CONTROL D ue to reasons such as poor cable reception, the picture can sometime appear slightly “speckled” (signal noise in the picture). USING THE CLOSED CAPTION CONTROL C losed Captioning (CC) allows you to read the voice content of television programs on the TV screen. Designed to help the hearing impaired, this feature uses onscreen “text boxes” to show dialogue and conversations while the TV program is in progress. USING THE SLEEP TIMER CONTROL H ave you ever fallen asleep in front of the TV only to have it wake you up at two in the morning with a test pattern screeching in your ears? Well, your TV can save you all that trouble by automatically turning itself off. USING TREBLE, BASS, AND BALANCE SOUND CONTROLS B esides the normal volume level control, your TV also has individual sound adjustment controls. USING THE TV SPEAKER CONTROL AND AUDIO OUTPUT JACKS W ould you like to hear TV programs through your audio hifi system? The TV's Audio Output jacks and TV Speaker On/Off control work together to offer you this TV sound option. BEGIN Connect the R(ight) and L(eft) AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV to the R and L Audio Input jacks on your amplifier or sound system. Set the audio system's volume to normal listening level. .. .. .
USING THE SURROUND SOUND EXTERNAL SPEAKER CONNECTIONS B y adding optional external speakers to the TV’s sound system, you can create the feeling of reflected sound that surrounds you at a movie theater or concert hall. BACK OF TV BEGIN Connect both external speakers to the speaker wire terminals on the TV. Recommended speakers: 8 ohm, 15 watt minimum. Be sure the (+) and (–) speaker wires are connected to the correct R(ight) and L(eft) speaker terminals on the TV.
HOW TO USE THE AUDIO/VIDEO INPUT JACKS AUDIO/VIDEO INPUTS The TV’s Audio/Video Input jacks are for direct picture and sound connections between the TV and a VCR (or similar device) that has Audio/Video Output jacks. BEGIN Connect the VIDEO (yellow) CABLE to the VIDEO IN jack on the back of the TV. Then connect the AUDIO (red and white) CABLES to the AUDIO (left and right) IN jacks on the rear of the TV (AV 1 or AV 2).
HOW TO USE THE AUDIO/VIDEO INPUT JACKS S-VIDEO INPUT The S(uper)-Video connection on the rear of the television can give you better picture detail and clarity, for the playback of SVHS VCR tapes, or Digital Video Discs than the normal antenna picture connections. Note: The accessory device being used must have a S-Video Output to complete this connection.. The following steps show the connections to the S-VIDEO 1 and AV 1 input jacks.
USING THE REMOTE LOCATOR FEATURE H ave you ever played hide and seek with your remote control? Are you tired of tearing the house apart trying to find if someone has stuffed the remote under the couch, put it on the shelves, or hid it in the desk? Well, your TV remote can save you all that looking by automatically signaling its location to you. Your TV is attempting to locate Here’s how it works: BEGIN a lost remote control Press the POWER button on the set to turn the TV ON.
USING THE REMOTE LOCATOR FEATURE ADDRESS CODE PROGRAMMING OF THE REMOTE For most homes this step would not be needed but for your information: Up to 9 different remote locator address codes can be set on which the TV can send out its “homing” signal. This is done in case there is more than one TV (with remote locator) present, and you want only one specific remote to be signaled when the TV is turned ON.
USING THE SMARTPICTURE CONTROL W hether you’re watching a movie or a video game, you TV has automatic video control settings matched for your current program source or content. The SmartPicture feature quickly resets your TV’s video controls for a number of different types of programs and viewing conditions you may have in your home. Each SmartPicture setting is preset at the factory to automatically adjust the TV’s Brightness, Color, Picture, Sharpness, Tint, and Color Temperature levels.
USING THE SMARTSOUND CONTROL T he SmartSound feature allows the listener to select between four different factory-set sound options. Personal (which can be set by the user), Theater (for movie viewing), Music (for musical programming) and Voice (when the program is mainly dialogue). To select any of the options, follow the directions below. PERSONAL BEGIN VOICE Press the SMART SOUND button on the remote control. The current SmartSound setting will appear in the middle of the screen.
USING THE TV’S CHANNEL SURF CONTROL A “list” or series of previously viewed channels can be selected with the SURF button on your remote control. With this feature you can easily switch between different TV programs that currently interest you. The SURF control allows you set up to ten channels in its quick viewing “list”. 5 SURF BEGIN 5 Press the CHANNEL (+) or (–) buttons (or the NUMBER buttons) to select a channel to add to the SURF list.
SETTING THE REMOTE CONTROL TO WORK WITH OTHER DEVICES Y our remote control is set to work your TV and many infrared remote (IR) control VCRs, Cable Boxes, Satellite Systems, DSS, DVD, etc. However, an easy onetime step may be necessary before the remote will work your VCR. USING THE REMOTE’S VCR BUTTONS W hen using the TV remote with a VCR, first make certain it is set to control your VCR (by the REMOTE CODE or SEARCH method). POWER LOCATOR BEGIN Set the TV/VCR/ACC mode switch to VCR on the remote. Point the top of the remote toward the front of the VCR (remote sensor window) when pressing the buttons. VCR SYSTEM SWITCH Set in the VCR position to send remote commands to the VCR. PLAY BUTTON Press to begin playback of a video tape. REWIND BUTTON Press to rewind tapes.
USING THE PIP (PICTURE-IN-PICTURE) FEATURE Hooking up PIP Picture-In-Picture (PIP) is the showing of two pictures on the TV screen at the same time. (One main screen picture and one small inset picture or PIP). For your ease and convenience this TV has two separate inputs (ANTenna A and PIP ANTenna B) for your home’s Antenna and/or Cable TV system signal. The ANT A input is primarily for the TV’ main screen picture.
USING THE PIP (PICTURE-IN-PICTURE) FEATURE CHOOSING THE PIP SOURCE The picture for the PIP window can come through either the ANT/CABLE (PIP ANT B) or any the the external Audio/Video connections (AV 1, AV 2 or S-VIDEO 1 , S-VIDEO 2) at the rear of the TV. PIP Source simply tells the TV which one of these sources it is to show in the PIP window. USING THE PIP (PICTURE-IN-PICTURE) FEATURE REMOTE CONTROL BUTTONS By using the PIP buttons on the remote control the PIP picture can be moved and swapped with the main screen. The PIP inset picture can also be frozen within the PIP window. BEGIN Press the PIP ON/OFF button to show the PIP picture. PIP appears in the upper right of the screen. 1. BEGIN First use an optional signal splitter and connect the original cable TV signal to both the CABLE IN on the Cable Converter and the ANTENNA plug on the rear of the television. GLOSSARY TO TELEVISION TERMS Alternate Channel • When using the A/CH button on the remote control, toggles between the last two channels viewed. Auto Programming • When activated, this feature automatically scans for all available channels. These channels come from regular antenna or cable signals (only active, broadcast stations) and they are stored into the TV’s memory. Channel Edit • Add or delete channels from the sequential tuning cycle to develop a customized list of channels you want to watch.
