Polar Heart Rate Monitors
The Polar A1 Heart Rate Monitor consists of the T31 Transmitter and the A1 Wrist Receiver.
The T31 transmitter is strapped around the patient’s chest and detects his/her heart rate. It then
transmits this information to the A1 wrist receiver, which displays the heart rate for the user. St.
Jude Medical performed a series of tests to determine if transmission of information between the
components of the Polar Heart Rate Monitor would affect the ability of St. Jude
Medical/Ventritex implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) to sense intrinsic activity, pace
in the absence of intrinsic activity, and appropriately detect and diagnose arrhythmias.
The Polar A1 Heart Rate Monitor, under normal operating conditions, should cause no
interference with the performance of St. Jude Medical/Ventritex implantable cardioverter
defibrillators. Please note that even though we do not anticipate any interference, we can not
guarantee that a Polar Heart Rate Monitor will not affect an ICD. Therefore, use of the Polar
Heart Rate Monitor in conjunction with an ICD should be discussed with the patient’s physician.
Additionally, the patient’s physician can perform a supervised real-time test with the appropriate
programmer to ensure safety and reliability of the simultaneous use of ICDs and a heart monitor.
