INFO SHEET – VERTICAL PULLING
The Portable Winch
TM
is not intended for lifting purposes.
Never use the Portable Winch
TM
to lift people.
The use of a pulling device implies serious risks of injuries, property damage or even death. Do not
underestimate its potential danger.
The PCW5000 Portable Winch
TM
is designed to pull non-rolling objects, usually at plus or minus 45 degree angle from the horizontal.
Even if the Portable Winch
TM
is not designed for vertical pulling (lifting), it can be securely used by TRAINED AND COMPETENT PEOPLE
using the APPROPRIATE ACCESSORIES such as those offered by Portable Winch Co.
If you wish to use the winch for vertical pulling (lifting) purposes, you MUST use AT ALL TIME a self-blocking pulley in your set-up.
AT ALL TIME, you need HIGHER SECURITY FACTORS.
The Portable Winch
TM
has a pulling capacity of 1000 kg (2200 lb) in single line (on the ground) with the standard 57 mm (2-1/4’’) diameter
capstan drum. For vertical pulling, it is STRONGLY RECOMMANDED to use the optional 85 mm (3-3/8’’) diameter capstan drum. It will
offer better friction, therefore a better control, mainly for lowering.
NEVER LIFT LOADS EXCEDING 250 kg (550 lb).
THE WEAKEST LINK – 10 TO 1 SECURITY FACTOR
In any set-up, you must know it’s only as resistant as the weakest link. This is why it is very important to use the adequate accessories in
accordance with the job to be done. In this case (vertical pulling), it is recommended to have a
10 TO 1 safety factor for all accessories.
ROPE: The 13 mm (1/2’’) double braided polyester rope offered by Portable Winch Co. has a maximum breaking strength (MBS) of 3674 kg
(8100 lb).
Even when using a very efficient knot such as the bowline knot, you still lose 30% of the rope capacity; in this case 1102 kg (2430 lb).This is
why the real capacity of the rope is actually 2572 kg (5670 lb). If you divide that capacity by the security factor (10), you get 257.2 kg (567
lb). This means it is very important not to go over 250 kg (550 lb) loads.
CARABINERS: The steel oval locking carabiners offered by Portable Winch Co. have an MBS of 2500 kg (5500 lb). If you divide that
capacity by the security factor (10), you get 250 kg (550 lb).
SELF-BLOCKING PULLEYS: The self-blocking pulleys offered by Portable Winch Co. have an MBS of 40 kN (4078 kg (8972 lb)). If you
divide that capacity by the security factor (10), you get 407 kg (897 lb), which is sufficient in this case. These pulleys will prevent the load to
suddenly fall in case a problem occurs with the installation or the operator and will prevent capstan drum heating.
VERTICAL PULL WINCH SUPPORT: This support, offered by Portable Winch Co., when used with the tree/pole mount, has an MBS of
4536 kg (10000 lb). If you divide that capacity by the security factor (10), you get 454 kg (1000 lb).
OTHER ACCESSORIES: No mater the accessories used in your set-up, it is IMPERATIVE to always respect the 10 TO 1 rule. This will
allow lowering the risk of accidents.
Remember THE FIRST CAUSE OF ACCIDENT IS HUMAN ERRORS. Make sure every person has received the appropriate training for
the job.
