How to Use this Manual Introduction This User’s Manual is intended for those providing care to patients in the Posey Bed 8060 who are successfully trained on the use of the Posey Bed 8060. It is important that the person(s) using the Posey Bed be properly trained before using the bed. Welcome to the Posey Bed 8060 Introduction The Posey Bed 8060 is an A-Frame canopy system. When attached to a compatible hospital bed (not included), the 8060 is designed to help provide a safe, controlled environment for patients at extreme risk of injury from a fall or unassisted bed exit. Prescription Only and Required Training Because the Posey Bed 8060 is a restraint, its use must be prescribed by a licensed doctor. Anyone caring for a patient in the Posey Bed 8060 must be trained.
About the Posey Bed 8060 Indications for Use (When the Posey Bed 8060 can be used) The Posey Bed 8060 is an A-Frame canopy system. When attached to compatible hospital bed (not included) the 8060 is designed to help provide a safe, controlled environment for patients at extreme risk of injury from a fall or unassisted bed exit.
When the Bed Should Not be Used (Contraindications) When Not to Use the Device It is important to note that Posey Bed 8060 is not suitable for every patient because every patient’s diagnoses, or activity level are different, the Posey Bed 8060 is not suitable for every patient. The Posey Bed 8060 is not intended for use with: • Patients who weigh less than 46 pounds, or are shorter than 46 inches.
A Special Note Background All hospital beds pose safety and entrapment risks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received approximately 803 entrapment reports in the U.S. for standard hospital beds over a period of 24 years from January 1, 1985 to January 1, 2009.3 The FDA formed the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup (HBSW) to develop solutions to reduce the risk of patient entrapment in hospital beds.
Patient Reassessment If the patient’s physical or mental health changes, check with the doctor to make sure the Posey Bed 8060 is still a safe enviroment. Use the Posey Bed 8060 only if there is not a less restrictive alternative. ALWAYS use the least restrictive device available for the shortest time while you seek a less restrictive option.
Description of the Posey Bed 8060 Bed Features and Benefits • 6 INCH (15 CM) ENCLOSED MATTRESS COMPARTMENT Helps avoid the risk of a patient being trapped under the mattress. The mattress compartment can be expanded to ten inches (25 cm) to fit a ten inch (25 cm) air type mattress. • NYLON CANOPY SYSTEM An A-frame green canopy surrounds the bed. The nylon is biocompatible.
Choosing the Right Bed for use with the Posey Bed 8060 Compatible Hospital Beds Fitting the Posey Bed 8060 through doorways Beds with removable head and footboards Beds with nonremovable head and footboards 10 The Posey Bed 8060 is an A-Frame canopy that attaches to a compatible hospital bed. Because the canopy does not include a bed, it is very important to choose the correct hospital bed for proper and safe use. Using the wrong bed may result in serious injury or death to the patient.
Choosing the Right Bed for use with the Posey Bed 8060 (Continued) Incompatible Beds Allen Head Screws Entrapment Risk (All Patients) - Use of Side Rails Entrapment Risk NEVER use the Posey Bed 8060 with: • Residential-type beds. The canopy system of the Posey Bed 8060 is not designed to securely attach to residential-type beds.
Warnings and Precautions Canopy Gaps Filler Cushions Entrapment Torso Cushion Entrapment risk for certain at-risk patients include canopy gaps. Raising the head of the Posey Bed 8060 will create “gaps” or “pockets” between the head of the bed and the canopy. These areas can cause extreme risk of serious injury or death from entrapment to certain at-risk patients. Keep the mattress flat with the head of the bed down, when an at-risk patient is alone. Warnings and Precautions (Continued) Importance of Adhering to a Care Regimen Failure to follow the doctor’s order, the patient’s care plan and all instructions, warnings and cautions in the manual and on all labels on the Posey Bed 8060, could result in patient death or serious injury. Monitor the patient’s condition according to your facility’s policy, the doctor’s orders, and the care plans.
Warnings and Precautions (Continued) Check the Zippers • NEVER use the bed if a zipper slider is bent open or damaged and the zipper cannot be zipped completely closed. Remove the patient from the damaged bed and exchange it for a Posey Bed in good working condition. Send the damaged Posey Bed in for repair. • NEVER use the bed if the zipper pull-tab is missing or broken. • NEVER leave the patient’s bedside until all access panel zippers are securely closed.
Basic Bed Operation Introduction This section will address basic bed operations that you will do routinely when accessing and caring for a patient. These basic operations include how to: • Install or replace the mattress, • Zip and unzip the access panels, • Use the tube and drainage ports. Assembly Manual Please refer to the Assembly Instructions (M5080) for detailed assembly instructions.
Zip and Unzip the Access Panels Introduction The Posey Bed 8060 has four (4) zippered access panels each labeled: • 2 side panels (A & B) • 1 end panel (C) • 1 end panel (D) All panels unzip for easy patient access. Using the QuickRelease Buckles There is a Quick-Release Buckle at the start of the zippers on the side access panels. To open the buckle, pinch the 2 sides together and pull the clip apart.
Zip and Unzip the Access Panels How to Properly Zip and Unzip Panels Each zipper has a pull-tab for opening and closing zippers. ALWAYS use the pull-tabs to open and close the zippers. ALWAYS make sure that all zipper teeth are engaged. Refer to page 14 for zipper warnings and precautions.
Use the Tube and Drainage Ports Introduction Tube and drainage ports allow for tubes (food, drainage, etc.) and IV lines to be delivered to and from the patient while in the bed. How to run Tube/ Line To run a tube or line into the patient compartment, unzip the port, run the tube or line through the zipper opening into the patient compartment, and zip the port closed. Close the zipper as much as possible without impeding the flow of the tube.
Before First Time Use Purpose Before using the Posey Bed 8060 for the first time, it’s important to check that the Posey Bed 8060 has been properly assembled, is in an appropriate area, and anyone who interacts with a patient in the Posey Bed 8060 successfully completes training.
Guidelines for Proper Bed Location Purpose Patient safety asks that the Posey Bed 8060 is located in an area that provides easy access to the patient under both normal and emergency conditions. Who Should Do This? Attending Nurse or Caregiver. Checklist NOTE: Each No (in table below) must be corrected before allowing a patient to use the Posey Bed 8060. Prior to use with a new patient, photocopy and retain this checklist to record that each item has been verified. Check Yes No 1.
New Patient Selection and Monitoring Purpose To make sure that the Posey Bed 8060 is right for the new patient and that his or her first hours in the bed are safe and secure. Who Should Do This? Attending Nurse or Caregiver.
Emergency Patient Access and Exit Purpose Under certain conditions a patient may experience an emergency (such as respiratory failure or cardiac arrest). In this instance it is necessary to access the patient quickly and possibly remove the patient from the bed safely. Procedure NOTE: At least 2 people are needed for quick access and possible exit. STEPS 1. Access the patient. a. Position the bed so it can be accessed from all four (4) sides. b. Lock the hospital bed casters. c.
Regular Daily Patient Care Introduction Patients using the Posey Bed 8060 should be carefully monitored and cared for according to the doctor’s orders and the patient’s care plan.
Moving the Patient Into the Bed Purpose To safely get a new or existing patient into the Posey Bed 8060. DO NOT use a patient lift unless already tested. This is to be sure there is enough room under the canopy frame to transfer the patient safely without damaging the canopy (see page 23). During patient care and when moving the patient into and out of the Posey Bed 8060, lock all hospital bed casters. Procedure NOTE: Additional persons may be needed for a safe transfer. STEP DO THIS 1.
Access and Care for Patient in the Bed Purpose To access safely and provide care to a patient in the Posey Bed 8060 including feeding, IVs, catheters, respiratory therapy, positioning, visitors and medicating. Make sure the patient is a safe distance from the side panel and the mattress is flat before accessing them. Serious injury may occur due to the added distance if the patient falls when the bed is raised.
Moving the Patient Out of the Bed Purpose To safely assist a patient out of the Posey Bed 8060 so he/she may use the bathroom or other reasons. DO NOT use a patient lift unless already tested. This is to be sure there is enough room under the canopy frame to transfer the patient safely without damaging the canopy. During patient care and when moving the patient into and out of the Posey Bed 8060, lock all hospital bed casters. Procedure NOTE: Additional persons may be needed for a safe transfer.
Special Consideration for Home Care Environments Use in a Home Care Setting All caregivers must be properly trained and familiar with the content of the manual before caring for the patient in a Posey Bed. Pay particular attention to all warnings and cautions in the manual to avoid injury or death. • Only for the amount of time prescribed for use by a licensed medical doctor (Rx Only). • Only if each caregiver has reviewed and understands all instructions and warnings for safe use.
Special Consideration for Home Care Environments (Cont.) Entrapment Risk (All Patients) - Use of Side Rails In Patient Emergency NEVER leave side rails in the up position when the patient compartment is closed. A failure to follow this warning may result in serious injury or death from entrapment in the side rails, or between the mattress and the side rails. The risk of entrapment is even greater when the head of the bed is raised.

Interior: Clean and free of clutter and hazards. 2 Mattress (At-risk patients not able to reposition themselves): To avoid entrapment, keep the head of the bed flat and use a cushion to elevate the torso if necessary. If the head of the bed is raised, use gap filler cushions.
When Not to Use the Posey Bed Purpose To make sure that the Posey Bed is properly assembled and is in good condition before patient use. The Posey Bed MUST be inspected each time before leaving the patient’s bedside. ALWAYS remove the patient from a damaged Posey Bed and remove it from service to prevent serious injury or death. Notify an authorized Posey representative for information about repairs. The repairs must be completed before the bed can be put back in service.
When Not to Use the Posey Bed (Cont.) • Zippers and zipper pins are not completely seated in their boxes and/ or not all of the teeth are engaged. • Zippers produce gaps and/or openings when pressure is applied to the entire length of the zipper. • Zippers do not close securely along the entire length. Gaps or openings in the zipper may allow the patient to open the zipper and fall out of bed.
Quick Clean the Posey Bed 8060 Purpose To keep the Posey Bed 8060 clean and disinfected between complete bed and canopy cleanings. Procedure STEPS DO THIS 1. Wipe the fabric with cleaning agent NOTE: NEVER use a concentration of cleaning agent greater than recommended by the manufacturer. a. Prepare a solution of diluted disinfectant or a water-based germicide. b. Use a damp cloth. c. Rinse with water to remove excess cleaning agent. 2. Dry fabric Either wipe or air dry before use. 3.
Machine Washing the Posey Bed 8060 ALWAYS wash the canopy between patients to help prevent transmission of infectious disease. Purpose To keep the Posey Bed 8060 clean and disinfected. Procedure STEPS 1. Wash the Canopy on one gentle cycle in cold water. NOTE: Water should be between 65-85°F (18-30°C) for approximately 25 minutes. 2. Dry fabric. 3. Clean the Hook and Loop strips. DO THIS a. Use a mild detergent. b. Load panels loosely into washing machine. c. Rinse thoroughly with water.
Posey Accessories The following accessories are appropriate for use with the Posey Bed 8060. NEVER use any accessory with the Posey Bed 8060 other than those recommended by Posey. A failure to follow this warning may result in serious injury or patient death. POSEY HEADBOARD/FOOTBOARD PADS (8002) To help protect the patient from injury from contact with the head or footboards of the hospital bed. POSEY INCONTINENCE PAD (8005A) To help protect mattress and bedding from urine spills.
Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions Canopy 1. Q: Why is the zipper difficult to open or close? A: It could be one or more of the following reasons: a. Fabric, bedding, or other material caught in the zipper slider. To release material, back the zipper slider off by pulling the tab in the opposite direction until the slider is free. Make sure the canopy is intact and there are no tears or holes in the fabric. b. Check the zipper teeth to make sure none of the coils are kinked. c.
Posey Limited Warranty WHAT DOES THIS WARRANTY COVER? Posey warrants to the original purchaser that the Posey Bed 8060 is free of defects in materials and workmanship. If the product is found to be defective in workmanship or materials, we will repair or replace it at our option at no charge, other than certain transportation and cleaning charges.
