I INTRO D U CTIO N Thank you for purchasing your new Fastback ® Model 20 binder! This easy to use, reliable desktop machine binds documents and books of up to 350 sheets of paper in sizes from 5 1/2” to 12” (13.97 cm to 30.48 cm) long. You will be able to bind soft cover documents, perfectback (paperback) books, and hard cover books.

U NPACK ING THE MACHI NE II 1. By reading this you have probably already opened the packaging and opened the flat box that was on top of the machine. 2. Remove the plastic wrapped Book Rest and 3 Cooling Rack Rests from the flat box. Unwrap by first unfolding the side flap to your left, then flipping the set over from left to right, removing each exposed plastic piece along the way. FIGURE 4 3. IV EASY STEPS Easy Steps to Perfectly Bound Books 1. When the machine is ready, slide your tamped papers to the right in the top recess. 2. Press the green BIND button. 3. Insert a binding strip into the side of machine. 4. After binding, remove your book and place in the cooling rack for 2-3 minutes. You should wait 5 minutes before using your book to allow the binding adhesive to fully set.

V BIND ING Once the machine warms up, a beep will sound and the display will prompt you through the steps to make a book. These helpful machine prompts are noted below. 1. Before inserting your pages in the binder, make sure they are all aligned by tapping them firmly on a hard flat surface to ensure that the edges of the paper are even. 2. Slide Book in Place. Place the document in the top recess and slide it to the right. Tap the pages again to make sure they are all aligned. (fig.

V BIND ING - CO NTINU ED If you want to bind a book that has a length different from your purchased strip, you can hand cut your strip to match that document’s length. However, it is very important that you insert the side with the adhesive gap first (fig. 11) to avoid adhesive leakage into the machine. FIGURE 11 For production quantities of books it is always recommended that you purchase strip manufactured to the correct length. NOTE: The binder is optimized to work with standard copy paper.

VI TIPS FOR BEST BINDING R E S U LT S 1) Even edges Before binding a document, be sure that the pages are even. Tap the document several times on the top of the machine vigorously. The pages in your book will be just as even as how you prepare them for binding. 2) Consider the grain Keep the grain of the paper running parallel to the binding (spine) edge of the document. All paper has a grain — it consists of the fibers that make up the paper.

Copies from older copiers using fuser oil and certain digitally printed papers should have the pages prepared with our Splitter™ Machine. We recommend testing all copy and digital printing papers before binding large numbers of documents. CP strips are designed for binding difficultto-bind papers.

ED ITING VII Need to edit your already bound books? The Fastback binder allows you to add or remove pages from bound books - meaning you can make minor revisions to your documents. With our Perfectback strips you can create books with continuous graphics on your wraparound soft cover! You will need a Powis Parker Scorer™ to crease your covers. It is the easiest machine on the market for sighting and positioning exactly where your scores will be made for any thickness of book up to 1½ inches thick.

For best results, you should score on top of the image-side of the cover in two places – at the spine edges of your book – along with a third score near the spine on the front cover to allow it to open more easily.

Peel off the release papers from the spine, first from one side of the book and then from the other side. (figure 20) 9b. On the Main Menu press the cursor button to navigate to the right until the SETTINGS selection appears. IX MENU L AYO U T - Co nti nue d Strip Wrap For Super Strips and Perfectback strips you may want to change how the strip wraps around your book. Usually the Super Strip is centered on the book’s spine, so it wraps around the book equally on the front and on the back. The Perfectback strip is set to wrap further around the back than the front, but you can change this setting with EVEN WRAP so the front and the back of the Perfectback strip wrap evenly on each side.

MAINTENANCE X WARNING: Internal assemblies can get extremely hot! Follow all precautions. The internal parts clean best while still warm, however, always turn off the machine and wait 5 minutes before cleaning. Use the heat protective glove. Usually little maintenance attention is necessary for your binder: cleaning is required if you see adhesive buildup on an operating part or when a strip has become jammed inside.

Open the machine by pushing the eraser end of a pencil (or similar object) through the hole in the lower right corner of the machine (figure 32) until the machine cover pops open slightly. 3. Raise the cover until the latch engages and the cover is held in the upright position.
