AnODES

Anodes are to be sacriﬁced in order to protect the drive unit

and propeller against galvanic corrosion. Volvo Penta anodes

are tested and specially produced for Volvo Penta drives and

propellers.

The speciﬁcations are, in certain cases, more stringent than

any other marine materials standards in the world. If 50% or

more of the anode has been eaten away by corrosion it must

be replaced in order to, once more, fulﬁl its vital function.

Never jeopardize safety and performance by ﬁtting a non-

genuine anode. Remember to never paint over the anodes.

Type of water

Find our general recommendation on which type of anode should be

used in what water type in below table.

Saltwater – Zinc

Brackish water – Aluminium

Freshwater – Magnesium

Zinc and aluminum anodes will if left in freshwater become covered

with a white oxide which effectively passivate the anode, zinc anodes

suffer a similar problem even in brackish water.

If the anode becomes passive, the drive will start to sacriﬁce itself, this

will cause serious damage. Magnesium anodes will wear off much to

fast in saltwater.

Volvo Penta’s S-drive propellers are manufactured of alumin-

ium, deve loped to with stand salt water and cavitation dam-

age. The propellers are manufactured to a high and consist-

ent quality under rigid quality controls.
