Owner's Manual

We've come up with a pretty nice little primer
for
MQA and the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital:
A few facts
to
start -
MQA
can
only
be
transmitted over
USB
from a computer right now.
As
I understand, it's not compatible with any mobile devices yet.
The
playback process
for
MQA
is
split into 2 stages, the decode and then the render.
o
These
can
be
both handled by the same device and
it
should show "MQA" on the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital Display.
o
These
can
also
be
split between the computer,
for
the decode stage, and the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital,
for
the render stage, which will
be
shown
as
"MQB" instead.
First thing
to
try
is
seeing
if
the
Pre
Box
is
having
issues
with MQA in any form
or
if
it
can
just
be
isolated
to
streaming.
Select one
of
the MQA test files from here:
http
:
//www
.2l.no/hires/index.html
By
clicking on one
of
the MQA files,
it
should start playing and display MQA on the
Pre
Box
I'm using Firefox, but I'm assuming
that
nearly any modern browser would behave similarly.
MQA through Tidal
is
usually pretty
easy,
but Tidal recently
threw
a pretty obscure curve at
us.
In
Tidal, open settings by clicking on the ellipses next
to
the user name in the upper left-corner
of
the window.
For the selection labelled "Loudness Normalization" make sure
that
this
is
DISabled.
o For some reason,
if
this
is
left enabled,
it
will completely defeat MQA through Tidal no
matter what
other
settings are enabled.
Make sure
that
Quality
is
set
to
"Master''
Just below that, in the sound settings, select the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital
as
the
output
and then click
on where
it
says
"More
Settings"
Make sure
that
all three
of
these options, "Use Exclusive Mode," "Force Volume," and
"Passthrough MQA," are enabled.
o
If
the MQA
is
showing on the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital's display, but playback
is
sounding
choppy,
it
may
be
better in your system
to
disable the "Passthrough MQA" option.
o
Without
"Passthrough MQA" enabled,
that
will move MQA's decode stage
to
the
computer's hardware and keep the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital
as
the renderer.
o This will show up
as
"MQB" on the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital Display.
If
it's still
not
playing back MQA content correctly, disconnect the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital from the computer
and reinstall the driver.
The
driver
can
be
found under downloads at https:
//www.project-
audio.com/en/product/pre-box-s2-digital/
After the driver
is
re-installed, re-connect the
Pre
Box
S2
Digital and
try
following the previous steps
again
to
see
if
anything
has
changed.
If
following all these steps
don't
rectify the issue, please visit www.tinyurl.com/SumikoCustomerService
to
fill
out
our
Service Request form. It's best
to
fill the form in
as
much
detail
as
possible
so
that
I
can
better understand which component in the process
is
failing.
As
our
new website becomes on line, we'll
be
building a
FAQ
section there where this information will
be
housed
as
well.
