RealDie -- 3
Theory of Operation
Using the Die
RealDie should be stored in the black magnetic holder when not in use. Open the
wood paneled storage case to remove the magnetic holder and die. Remove the die
from the magnetic holder, instantly turning the die on to send signals to the receiver
unit. To conserve battery when the die is not in use, you need to store it in the
provided magnetic holder in this orientation: 1-side facing up, 5-side facing the
magnet, as shown below.
How the Numbers are Sent
Each RealDie has six sides. The transmitter inside sends out one to six pulses,
according to which side is on top. The receiver vibrates or “buzzes” in response, telling
you what you need to know.
Each sequence of buzzes is followed by a pause. The sequence repeats eight to ten
times, unless the cube is turned before the final signal. For example, a “4” registers as
buzz/buzz/buzz/buzz/pause; buzz/buzz/buzz/buzz/pause; etc.
Tips
1) The die must be held level (i.e., flat on a hand or table, or in a cup) to give an
accurate reading however, it is slightly forgiving and even if tilted up to 20 degrees
from level, the die will still give a correct read. A die tilted more than 20 degrees may
read the next closest side, though, which would leave you uncertain. To avoid this,
manage your spectators and show them how to hold the die (i.e., flat).
2) If a spectator turns the die to a new side, the receiver must finish reporting the
current number before it reports the next number. It won’t go through ten repeats, but
will finish its current sequence of buzzes, then change to the new number.
