• Have a tool kit aboard. The kit should include the following basic tools:
Spark plug wrench Hammer
Spark plug gap gauge Electrician’s Tape
Screwdrivers Lubricating Oil
Pliers Jackknife
Adjustable Wrench Vise Grip Pliers
Needle Nose Pliers Wire Crimping Tool
End Wrench Set Wire Connector Set
• Have the following spare parts on board:
Extra light bulbs Spark plugs
Fuses and circuit breakers Flashlight and batteries
Drain plugs Engine oil
Propellers Fuel filters
Propeller nuts Fuel hose and clamps
• Make sure all fire extinguishers are in position and in good operating condition.
• Be sure the shift control is in the neutral position.
• Be sure the emergency stop lanyard is attached to the operator and the stop switch.
VAPORIZING LIQUID EXTINGUISHERS GIVE OFF TOXIC FUMES; USE ONLY
COAST GUARD APPROVED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.
12.4 Operating Your Boat
After Starting the Engines:
TO REDUCE THE RISK OF A FIRE OR EXPLOSION, DO NOT START THE ENGINES
WHEN FUEL FUMES ARE PRESENT. FUEL FUMES ARE DANGEROUS AND HARM-
FUL TO YOUR HEALTH.
• Visibly check the engines to be sure there are no apparent water, fuel or oil leaks.
• Check the operation of the engine cooling systems.
• Check the engine gauges. Make sure they are reading normally.
