C onsiderations for successful draft include: • Preventing negative pressure • Location of appliance and chimney Negativ e pres s ure results from the imbalance of air available for the stove to operate properly. C auses for this imbalance include: • Exhaust fans (kitchen, bath) etc.

As shown in F igure 6 . 1 on page 6 the chimney should: B efore beginning the installation be sure that the following tools and building supplies are available. • Be installed through the warm space enclosed by the building envelope. T his helps to produce more draft, especially during lighting and die down of the fire.

Hearth P rotection Req uirements F LOOR P ROTECTION: F loor protector must be noncombustible material, ext ending beneath heater and to the front, sides and rear as indicated. The floor must be noncombustible or otherwise adeq uately protected from radiant heat given off by the unit and from spark s and falling embers. A layer of thin brick or ceramic tile over a combustible floor is not sufficient.

The chimney connector joins the stove to the chimney. It must be a 6 inch ( 1 5 2 mm) minimum diameter 2 4 gauge mild steel black or 2 6 gauge blued steel, or an approved air- insulated double wall venting pipe.

This occurs when the flammable gases have been mostly burned and only charcoal remains. T his is a naturally clean portion of the burn. The coals burn with hot blue flames.

F ire Ris k . There are many ways to build a fire. The basic principle is to light easily- ignitable tinder or paper, which ignites the fast burning ki ndling, which in turn ignites the slow- burning firewood. Here is one method that works well: 1 . Place several wads of crushed paper on the firebox floor.
