12-801.fm Page 4 Tuesday, February 22, 2000 2:29 PM PREPARATION CONNECTING POWER You can power your radio from any of these sources. • internal AA batteries (not supplied) • internal Ni-Cd rechargeable battery pack (supplied) • built-in power generator (dynamo) Using AA Batteries Your radio can use two AA batteries (not supplied) for power. For the best performance and longest life, we recommend RadioShack alkaline batteries.

Remove the battery compartment cover by pushing in the cover’s two tabs (shown removed) then pulling the cover in the direction of the arrow marked on the cover. 2. Place the batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and –) marked inside. 3. Replace the cover.

Warning: Dispose of batteries promptly and properly; do not bury or burn them. Caution: If you do not plan to use the radio for a week or more, remove the AA batteries. That type of battery can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic parts.

Remove the battery compartment cover. 2. The supplied Ni-Cd battery is installed but not connected. Insert the battery pack’s white plug into the socket. Replace the compartment cover. Battery Pack Caution: The battery pack’s polarized plug fits into the socket only one way.
12-801.fm Page 8 Tuesday, February 22, 2000 2:29 PM 3. Set DYNAMO/BATT to DYNAMO or BATT. Charging takes place using either position. 4. Set FM/AM/OFF to OFF. 5. Lift the crank and rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise. Radio operation time depends on the number of turns and the time per turn.

Return the crank to the folded position. If turning the crank at about 2 turns per second for about 1 minute does not power the radio for at least 15 minutes, replace the Ni-Cd battery pack. 12-801.fm Page 10 Tuesday, February 22, 2000 2:29 PM OPERATION PLAYING THE RADIO 1. Rotate DYNAMO/BATT to BATT if you have installed AA batteries. To power the radio using the Ni-Cd pack or the generator, rotate DYNAMO/ BATT to DYNAMO. 2. Set FM/AM/OFF to the desired band. 3. Rotate TUNING to select the desired station. 4. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. 5. To turn off the radio, set FM/AM/OFF to OFF. USING THE DISPLAY LIGHT Hold down LIGHT to illuminate the dial in low-light conditions.

USING EARPHONES/ HEADPHONES To listen to the radio privately, connect an earphone or headphone with a 1/8-inch (3.5-mm) plug to the jack beneath the rubber flap on the side of the radio. Plugging in an earphone or headphone disconnects the internal speaker.

After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. • Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. • Once you set the volume, do not increase it.

If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. • Use and store the radio only in normal temperature environments. • Handle the radio gently and carefully. Do not drop it. • Keep the radio away from dust and dirt. • Wipe the radio with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new.

To determine whether your radio is causing the interference turn off your radio. If the interference goes away, your radio is causing it.
