Testing installed memory
AftertheDIMMsareinstalledandtheCPMisinstalledintheshelf,verifythatthe
expectedmemoryisavailableandthememoryisvalidbyperformingthefollowingtests.
Verifying DIMM operation
VerifythattheBIOSdetectsandenablesallinstalledmemory.Thetotalmemorysize
detectedandenabledisreportedinthemainpageoftheBIOSsetupmenu.
IfthetotalamountofdetectedmemoryislessthanthetotalphysicalDIMMmemorythat
isinstalled,checkeachDIMMforthese
conditions:
•TheDIMMisincorrectlyinstalled
•TheDIMMisfaulty
•TheDIMMinstallationviolatesthepopulationrule.SeeMismatchedDIMM
combinationsandSELerroreventsonpage 18fordetailsaboutpopulationrules.
ADIMMthatisnotdetectedorenabledproperlycanbeidentifiedthroughtheBIOSsetup
menu(
Chipset>NorthBridge>DIMMinfo).
Running a memory test
AftertheDIMMsareinstalled,amemorytestcanberunfromtheEFIshellbyex ecuting
thememtestcommand.Thetestscansallmemoryregionsandreportsanyerrors.
Followthesesteps:
1. AccesstheEFIshellfromtheBIOSsetuputilitybymakingitthefirstbootdevice,orby
choosingEFIshellafterselectingtheOverridebootsourcefornextbootsettinginthe
Save&Exitmenu.
2. Startthememorytestbyenteringmemtestwithoutanycommandarguments.The
memorytestloopscontinuouslythroughavailablememoryregionsuntiltheESCkeyis
pressed.

Note:DisableECCerrorcorrectionintheBIOSsetupbeforerunningthememorytes t.This
ensuresmaximumtestaccuracyandpreventsthemaskingofhardwareerrors.IfECCis
enabled,checkthesystemeventlogforanyECCerrorsthatmayoccurduringthememory
test.
