This letter is in reference to the use of ITW Ramset powder actuated loads. From time
to time users may find themselves in possession of powder loads that are unusable for
a variety of reasons. There are a few options to dispose of these loads. These options
are often dependant on local disposal regulations. Local authorities should be
consulted first for any unique regulations.
In most locations it is acceptable to place fired or spent loads in the trash, provided
there are no misfires or unfired loads within the grouping to be disposed. Again, check
with local authorities on methods of disposal.
The first and best option to dispose of any unspent loads would be to fire them in the
applicable tool. If the load is a misfire and has a firing pin indent, in some cases the
load can be reinserted into the tool and fired, or the load can sometimes be rotated,
reinserted and fired in the tool.
The second option would be to find a local hazardous material disposal site to take any
live loads. Sometimes there is a cost associated with this.
A third option is, small quantities of loads may be submersed in water for a period of
time and disposed of in a normal manner, subject to local regulations. This submersion
is also outlined in the misfire procedure contained in each Ramset tool manual. All
powder-actuated manufacturers are required by ANSI A10.3 to color identify each load
casing to dictate its power level. This coating will require long submersion times to
assure water has penetrated the load rendering them useless.
