14.1Howtheshnderworks
Theshnderapplicationusesasonarmoduleandasuitablesonar
transducer.Thesonarmoduleinterpretssignalsfromthetransducer
andbuildsupadetailedunderwaterview.
Thetransducerislocatedonthebottomoftheboat,itsendspulses
ofsoundwavesintothewaterandmeasuresthetimeittakesforthe
soundwavetotraveltothebottomandback.Thereturningechoes
areaffectedbybottomstructureandbyanyotherobjectsintheir
path,forexamplereefs,wrecks,shoalsorsh.
Colorsareusedonthedisplaytoindicatethestrengthofthereturns.
Youcanusethisinformationtodeterminethebottomstructure,
thesizeofshandotherobjectsinthewater,suchasdebrisor
airbubbles
Note:Sometransducersincludeadditionalsensorstomeasure
watertemperatureand/orspeed.

Broadbandsonartechnology
Traditionalsoundersuseasinglecarrierfrequencyorcarrierwave
forthesonarping.Thesesoundersworkbymeasuringthetimeit
takesthepingechotoreturntothetransducertodeterminetarget
depth.Usingthismethodif2targetsareclosetogethertheyare
shownasasinglelargetarget,ratherthanmultiplesmallertargets.
Byusingabroadbandsweptfrequency'CHIRP'thesignalcan
distinguishbetweenmultipleclosetargetswhichenablesthe
soundertodisplaymultipletargetsinsteadoflargecombined
targets.

•bottomdetectioneventhroughbaitballsandthermoclines.
