The Code.
Effective February 2009, the International
Mechanical Code and International
Residential Code now require that all outdoor
access ports on A/C Refrigerant circuits be
made tamper resistant.
International Mechanical Code 1101.10 -
Locking access port caps. “Refrigerant circuit
access ports located outdoors shall be tted
with locking-type tamper resistant caps.”
International Residential Code M1411.6 -

Why?
Misuse of refrigerant gas has come into sharp
focus within the last few years due to reports
of injury/fatality related to the venting and
inhalation of the toxic refrigerant gases from
A/C systems and storage tanks containing
refrigerant gas.
