Program and tool selection:
Op 1 and Op 2: A 1 ½ Weldon Shank Kennametal index able end mill with three inserts is selected to face
off the ends of the block. According to Kennametal the ideal cutter diameter to part width or cut ratio is
1:1.5. For better tool life ¼ of the cutter diameter should be outside the work piece. This results in a
negative angle of entry. (Kennametal Milling Catalog 6050 Inch, Copyright 2008, Kennametal inc., Latrobe,
PA 15650, p.488) Standard carbide 1/2 90 spot drill and 5/16

jobber length 118 point HSS drill are
used to create the 5/16 thru holes.
Op 3: A ¼ carbide 135 split point screw machine drill and a carbide 4 flute, stub length 30 helix are
used to create the counter bored holes .
Op 4 #29 cobalt screw machine length drill and 8-32 standard tap are used for the back side.
