Why Recirculation?
Selection Considerations
Geography | Groundwater Temperature
Tank water heaters have the advantage of adding
incoming cold water to a tank already storing hot
water. Whereas, tankless models start heating water
when you need it. The colder the groundwater, the
more powerful the model needs to be. Consider
incoming water temperature (especially in winter)
when choosing a model.
Usage and Sizing
Continuous hot water means you can enjoy more hot
water with longer showers, use simultaneous fixtures
or both. Whether simultaneous showers or washing
laundry during bath time, consider your usage needs
to determine model size. For example, for a 2.5 bath
home, many plumbers will base usage off 2 showers
being used simultaneously. Consider usage when
choosing a model.
Venting
Gas tankless indoor models require new venting if
replacing a tank. Performance Plus models require
stainless steel venting, while Platinum models use
low cost PVC for venting, whereas outdoor models
require no venting at all. For this reason, outdoor
models are popular in warmer climates. Consider
tankless location, venting and venting material costs
when choosing a model.
By circulating hot water from
the tankless unit, through the
home’s plumbing it can be
ready at the faucet when
needed.
