Controls (right hand side) Battery operation The use of alkaline batteries is strongly recommended. Other battery types can be used, including Nickel Metal-Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries, but these will give very much reduced operating times compared to alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries cannot be recharged inside the radio. 19 1. Release the catch securing the rear battery compartment door of your radio and lift up the battery compartment cover. 2.
Using the fixing brackets The radio is supplied with a mounting bracket to allow wall mounting (for example in a bathroom). 1. Use the bracket as a template to mark the hole positions before drilling. Take care to ensure that there are no cables or pipes in the wall near the hole locations. 2. Use screw fixings appropriate to the wall type. Do not overtighten the screws. 3. The radio may be hung on the bracket as shown. 4. The radio can be removed by lifting it off the bracket.
Swivel hanger / handle The multi purpose handle may be used to hang or carry the radio if not using the supplied mounting brackets. IMPORTANT : If the handle is used to hang the radio, make sure that the handle is locked with the loop closed so that the radio cannot fall if it is accidentally knocked.
Operation via an AC adaptor (not supplied) The AC adaptor for use with your Splash radio should provide 5 volts DC output at 600mA centre pin positive. 1. Insert the adaptor plug into the DC socket located on the left hand side of your radio. 2. Plug the adaptor into a standard 13 amp mains socket outlet. Whenever the adaptor is used the batteries are automatically disconnected. • IMPORTANT: The mains adaptor is used as the means of connecting the radio to the mains supply.
Operating your radio 1. Fully extend the wire aerial located on the rear of your radio (inside the battery compartment). Place the wire antenna so that it is as straight as possible extending either above or below the radio. 2. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. The display will show 'Welcome to Digital Radio'. After a short time the current time will appear on the display. 3. If this is the first time the radio is used a scan of Band III DAB channels may be carried out.
Selecting a station - DAB 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. 2. Press and release the Band button until the DAB mode is selected. The display will show the name of the radio station currently selected. 3. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons to step through the list of available stations. Display options - DAB Your radio has a range of display options when in DAB mode:1. Press and release the Info button to cycle through the various options. a. Scrolling text Displays scrolling text messages such as artist/track name, phone in number, etc. b. Programme type Displays the type of station being listened to e.g. Pop, Classic, News, etc. c. Multiplex Name Displays the name of the DAB multiplex to which the current station belongs. d. Date Displays the current date. e.
Display options cont. - DAB f. Bit rate & audio type g. Signal strength Displays the digital audio bit rate and audio type for the currently tuned DAB station. Displays the signal strength for the currently tuned DAB station. The open block in the signal strength graph shows the minimum signal strength needed for good DAB reception. The signal blocks will go up or down showing the changing signal strength as you adjust the wire aerial or the radio position.
Manual tuning - DAB Manual tuning allows you to tune your radio to a particular DAB frequency in Band III. Any new stations found will be added to the station list. This function can also be used to assist the positioning of the aerial or the radio to optimise reception for a specific channel or frequency. Note that UK DAB stations are located in the range of channels 11B to 12D. DAB Manual tune 1 1. Press and hold the Menu button. 2.
Dynamic Range Control (DRC) - DAB The DRC facility can make quieter sounds easier to hear when your radio is used in a noisy environment. There are three levels of compression: DRC 0 2 DRC No compression applied. (default) DAB DRC 1/2 Medium compression applied. DRC 1 Maximum compression applied. 3 DRC DRC 0 1. Display options - FM Your radio has a range of display options for FM mode:The Radio Data System (RDS) is a system in which inaudible digital information is transmitted in addition to the normal FM radio programme. Scan sensitivity setting - FM Your radio will normally scan for FM broadcasts which are strong enough to give good reception. However, you may wish the Auto-scan function to also be able to find weaker signals, possibly from more distant radio transmitters. Presetting stations - DAB and FM You may store your preferred DAB and FM radio stations to the preset station memories. There are 8 memory presets in your radio, 4 for DAB and 4 for FM. Presets are remembered by your radio in the event of a power failure. 1 BBC Radio 2 Preset 1 stored The procedure for setting presets and using them to tune stations is the same for FM and DAB modes, and is described below. 1. Recalling a preset station 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on the radio. 2. Press and release the Band button to select the desired waveband. 3. Press and release the required Preset button. The display will show, for example, 'Preset 2 Empty' if no station has been stored to that preset. If a preset has been stored, then the display will show either the station name (for DAB stations) or the frequency (for FM stations). 1 2 4.
Timer alarm The timer alarm facility allows you to set the radio to alert you after a predetermined interval (up to 99 minutes). 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. DAB System 1 2. Sleep function Your radio can be set to turn off after a preset time has elapsed. The sleep setting can be adjusted between 15 and 90 minutes. 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. Setting the clock manually Normally your radio will set its clock automatically using the DAB radio signal. If no DAB signal is available and you need to set the time manually, please follow the procedure shown below. DAB System 1 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. 2. Setting the clock format The clock display can be set to 12 or 24 hour format. The selected format is then also used when setting the clock time. 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. Poolside alarm Your radio has a built in alarm buzzer for emergencies. The alarm is to be used if you require help. The poolside alarm can be used with the radio in the on or off position. 1. Press the Poolside alarm button to activate the buzzer. 2. Press the Poolside alarm button again to stop the buzzer. Poolside LED torch Your radio has a built in LED torch which can be used to illuminate for a short distance when required. The lamp can be used with the radio in the on or off position. 1.
Carrying strap Your radio is supplied with a carrying strap. 1. The strap is fitted as shown in the diagrams 1-4 below. 2. Ensure that the free end of the strap is completely through the buckle before using the strap to carry the radio.
Software version The software display cannot be altered and is just for your reference. 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. DAB System 1 2. Press and hold the Menu button. 3. System reset If your radio fails to operate correctly, or some digits on the display are missing or incomplete carry out the following procedure. 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your radio. 1 DAB System 2 System Factory Reset 2. Press and hold the Menu button. 3. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until 'System' appears on the display. Press and release the Select button. 4. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until 'Factory Reset' appears on the display. Press and release the Select button.
Clock display The time can be shown either in the 12 or 24 hour format. Display backlight 1. The display backlight will be switched on for approximately 15 seconds when any button is pressed. Splash proof (when used on battery only) The Splash radio is designed to withstand occasional exposure to splashing water in a bathroom, shower or poolside environment. The radio is not intended to be immersed in water.
Cautions Do not allow this radio to be exposed to water (but see splash proof page 30), steam or sand. Do not leave your radio where excessive heat could cause damage such as in a parked car where the heat from the sun can build up even though the outside temperature may not seem too high. It is recommended that the DAB band be used wherever possible as better results in terms of quality and freedom from interference will usually be obtained than on the FM band.
