CHAPTER 1
General Information
1.1. INTRODUCTION.
This publicat ion provides all the specications, principles of operation, and information necessary to install, test, and troubleshoot
the TSS-4100 Trafc Surveillance System (TSS). The three major functions of the TSS-4100 follow:
The TSS-4100 is a Mode S transponder that replies to directed and all-call interrogations.
The TSS-4100 is a Trafc Alert Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II, change 7 unit. It monitors the area around the aircraft
for potential airspace conicts.
When enabled, the TSS-4100 is also an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) transmitter/receiver unit. It trans-
mits the aircraft position, velocity, and identication. It also processes the transmissions of other ADS-B equipped aircraft.

The Equipment Covered table shows the system avionics, mount, and avionics software. Associated equipment shows closely related
avionics. Refer to Figure 1-1 for the hardware of a typical single Trafc Surveillance System.
