*** Emergency Overview ***: When in contact with moisture in eyes or skin, or when mixed with water Portland
Cement becomes highly caustic (pH>12) and will damage or burn the eyes or skin. Inhalation may cause irritation
to the moist mucous membranes of the nose, throat and upper respiratory system, or may aggravate certain lung
diseases or conditions. Causes eye irritation. Causes skin irritation. May cause allergic skin reaction.
Effects Of Overexposure - Eye Contact: Extremely irritating to the eyes and may cause severe damage,
including blindness. Substance causes severe eye irritation. Injury may be permanent.
Effects Of Overexposure -
Skin Contact: May cause severe irritation. May cause dryness, cracking, irritation, and
chemical burns. May produce cement dermatitus due to primary irritation from alkaline, hedroscopic, and abrasive
properties. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident on re-exposure to this
material.
Effects Of Overexposure - Inhalation: High vapor concentrations are irritating to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs.
Effects Of Overexposure - Ingestion: May cause obstruction in stomach, as it hardens with moisture. Symptoms
include stomach pain, distress. Drinking glycerin, gelatin solutions, or large volumes of water may delay the
hardening of calcium sulfate in the stomach. Surgical relief of obstruction, particularly at the pylorus, may be
necessary.
Substance may be harmful if swallowed.
