SURFACE PREPARATION
BARE CONCRETE: Proper surface preparation is critical to
performance. Allow new concrete to cure for a minimum of 28
days. Remove any oil spots or spills and wash the floor with a
suitable detergent or degreasing solution and rinse. Then etch
the floor using the Concrete Etch.
PREVIOUSLY COATED FLOORS: Make sure the floor is clean
and dry. Use a wire brush to remove any loose or peeling paint
or stain.
If the floor is sealed, the sealer will have to be removed by
grinding or shot blasting. Rinse or sweep away dust and other
particles. To ensure proper adhesion, scuff sand the entire
surface.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may
release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD
DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN
DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN YOUNG CHILDREN. PREGNANT
WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a
NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up
carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start,
find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the
National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on
to www.epa.gov/lead.
.PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
APPLICATION
EpoxyShield Low VOC Concrete Floor paint is ready to use. Do
not thin. Apply only when air, material, and surface temperatures
are between 60-85°F (15-29°C) and the surface temperature is
at least 5°F (3°C) above the dew point. The relative humidity
should not be greater than 85%. Thoroughly mix each container
to re-disperse any settled pigment. If using more than one gallon,
intermix (box) all cans of the same product to ensure color
uniformity. Do not paint outdoors if rain is expected within 48
hours.
Use a brush or edger to trim the perimeter and hard-to-reach
areas before beginning roller application. Use a synthetic 3/8"
nap roller cover on a 9" roller frame to apply an even coat of
EpoxyShield Low VOC Concrete Floor Paint onto the surface.
Limit the application to 4x4 foot (1.2x1.2m) sections at a time to
maintain a wet edge to prevent lap marks and gloss differences.
Continue applying in 4 x 4 foot sections until complete. Only one
coat is necessary. If a second coat is desired, wait 24 hours
before applying the second coat in a direction perpendicular to
the first. Occasional touch-up may be necessary for areas
subject to heavy vehicle traffic. Note: Painted floors may be
slippery when wet. If desired, EpoxyShield Anti-Skid Additive
(sold separately) may be added to the mixed coating.
DRY & RECOAT TIMES
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative
humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Surface
should be ready for foot traffic in 24 hours. For full cure and
vehicle traffic, allow 5 days.
CLEAN-UP
Wash tools and equipment with warm water and a mild
detergent immediately after use. To remove dried product use
lacquer thinner. Clean up drips or spatters IMMEDIATELY with
water as dried paint is very difficult to remove. Properly dispose
of all soiled rags and protect unused product from freezing.
COVERAGE
Each gallon contains enough surface treatment to cover
approximately 300-450 sq. ft. of smooth, bare concrete. Very
rough or porous surfaces will require more material. Use ½" nap
roller for rough or porous surface.
