STARTING PROJECT
SURFACE PREPARATION
Previously Finished Surfaces To ensure proper adhesion,
surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of wax, grease, oil,
shellac, lacquer, mildew, and polishes. Remove wax with a
wax stripper, shellac with a paint stripper, and mildew with a
solution of 10% household bleach and water. Old finishes in
poor condition should be removed. If existing finished wood
surface or wood floor is in good condition and free from wax
or other contaminates, you may recoat without totally
sanding surface to bare wood. If sanding is need, sand using
150-220 grit sandpaper to obtain a smooth surface. Do not
use steel wool as rust may develop after the finish has been
applied. Remove all sanding dust using a vacuum, tack
cloth, or cloth dampened with mineral spirits.
Unfinished Surfaces Sand using 150-220 grit sandpaper
and remove all sanding dust using a vacuum, tack cloth, or
rag dampened with mineral spirits. If a filler or putty is used,
make sure it does not contain wax and allow enough time for
it to dry thoroughly.
Stained or Painted Wood Oil or water based stains can be
used prior to finish application for custom coating. Test a
sample area for product compatibility. If applying stain, it is
not necessary to use a sealer. Pro Finisher Polyurethane
may be applied directly over a thoroughly dry stain. If the use
of a sealer is desired, Pro Finisher Universal Sealer is
recommended.

SURFACE PREPARATION (cont.)
Sealing Surface A sealer may be used as an option to
initially coat bare wood surface. It penetrates and seals the
wood and dries quickly. Pro Finisher Universal Sealer has
excellent adhesion and very fast dry time. Sealer must be
dry before applying finish.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you my
release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD
DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS BRAIN
DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT
WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a
NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean
up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before
you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by
contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-
424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
APPLICATION
Use with adequate ventilation at all times. Apply only when
air (ambient) temperature is between 60-80°F (16-27°C) and
relative humidity is below 85%. Stir contents before using
and frequently during use. Do not shake container. The
finish contains flattening agents that can settle and require
frequent stirring during use. Use full strength. Do not thin.
Apply Pro Finisher Polyurethane using a synthetic or lamb’s
wool pad applicator, natural bristle brush, polyester brush,
short nap roller or a weighted T-bar. Apply in direction of
wood grain in smooth, level strokes. Apply thin, even coats
at a rate of 300-400 square feet per gallon. Thicker coats will
take longer to dry. Note: A lamb’s wool applicator may apply
finish heavier than necessary. Allow product to dry 6-10
hours. Overnight dry is preferred to produce a high quality
appearance. Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity
may extend dry times. Sanding between coats is not
required for intercoat adhesion as long as the time between
coats is less than 8 hours. However, sanding or screening
between coats produces a smooth, uniform surface. A
minimum of 2 coats is recommended after the sealer coat.
Allow final coat to dry overnight before permitting light traffic
or use of surface. Finish will take up to 14 days to totally
cure. Do not place area rugs on floor and avoid exposure or
washing for approximately 1 week.
COVERAGE
Varies with surface porosity and will cover approximately
400 square feet per gallon.
CLEAN-UP
Clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits or
paint thinner.
