2.5.Operatingprinciple
GEMS‐Hisa wearablepoweredexoskeletonthatactivelyassistsindividualstowalk.TheGEMS‐Hconsistsof snap‐
together components weighing4.7 lbs(2.1kg) intotal. The waist part houses two actuatormodules, aBluetooth
module,andacontrolpack.Eachactuatormodulehousesamotoraswellasanembeddedangularpositionsensor
andcontroller.Inthecontrolpack,there isacentralprocessor, anIMUsensor,arechargeablebatterypackanda
powerswitch.
TheGEMS‐Hhastheabilitytoassistwearers’walking.TheGEMS‐HhasonlyoneWalkAssistmode,whichisoperated
basedontheDOC(DelayedOutputControl)algorithm.IntheDOCalgorithm,anon‐boardmicroprocessorreceives
signalsfrom integratedsensors which provideinformation onthe patient’s joint angles.The sensors inthedevice
detect the hip joint angle and associated angular velocity fromthepatient’sgait,basedonwhichthecentral
processordeterminestheoptimalassistivetorqueoutput.Theactuatormodulethentransmitstheassistiveforceto
thepatient’shipjointtoreducethephysicaleffortinwalking.
