Expressions used in this manual Pressing the shutter Exposure (Brightness) • Half-press [Shutter]: press the shutter halfway down The amount of light that enters your camera determines the exposure. You can alter the exposure with shutter speed, aperture value, and ISO speed. By altering the exposure, your photos will be darker or lighter.
Common questions You can get answers to common questions. Solve problems easily by setting shooting options. The subject's eyes appear red. Inserting the battery and memory card Learn how to insert the battery and an optional memory card into the camera. Using the touch screen Learn how to use the touch screen. The touch screen works best when you touch it with the soft part of your finger. Do not use sharp objects, such as pens or pencils, to touch the screen. You can damage the screen. Touching Touch an icon to select a menu or option. • When you touch or drag on the screen, discoloration may occur. It is not a malfunction but a characteristic of the touch screen. Touch or drag lightly to reduce these effects.

Taking photos Turning on the front display Option The front display will help you take self-portraits or photos of children, couples, or people jumping. On: Turn on the front display. Taking photos Digital zoom Zooming If the zoom indicator is in the digital range, your camera is using the digital zoom. The picture quality may deteriorate when you use the digital zoom. You can shoot close-up photos by adjusting the zoom. Your camera has a 5X optical zoom and 5X digital zoom. By using both, you can zoom in up to 25 times. Push [Zoom] right to zoom in on your subject. Push [Zoom] left to zoom out.
Taking photos Reducing camera shake (OIS) apsDv • OIS may not function properly when: - You move your camera to follow a moving subject. You use the digital zoom. There is too much camera shake. The shutter speed is slow. (For example, when you select Night in s mode.) - The battery is low. - You take a close-up shot. • If you use the OIS function with a tripod, your images may be blurred by the vibration of the OIS sensor. Deactivate the OIS function when you use a tripod.
Tips for getting a clearer photo Holding your camera correctly Reducing camera shake • Set the Optical Image Stabilization option to Make sure nothing is blocking the lens. reduce camera shake optically. Preventing your subject from being out of focus • When you take photos in low light It may be difficult to get your subject in focus when: - There is little contrast between the subject and background. - Turn on the flash. (p. 50) (For example, when your subject is wearing clothing that is similar in color to the background.) The light source behind the subject is too bright. The subject is shiny. The subject includes horizontal patterns, such as blinds.

Shooting modes Take photos or record videos by selecting the best shooting mode for the conditions. Using the Smart Auto mode Icon In this mode, your camera automatically chooses the appropriate camera settings based on the type of scene it detects. The mode is helpful if you are not familiar with the camera settings for various scenes. 1 2 Description Appears when taking portraits at night. Shooting modes Using the Program mode Recording a video In the Program mode, you can set most options, except the shutter speed and aperture value, which the camera sets automatically. Record videos of up to 20 minutes in length in high definition. Selecting a resolution and quality Learn how to change the image resolution and quality settings. Selecting a resolution SapsdDv Option As you increase the resolution, your photo or video will include more pixels, so it can be printed on larger paper or displayed on a larger screen. When you use a high resolution, the file size will also increase. 4320 X 3240: Print on A1 paper. 4320 X 2880: Print on A1 paper in wide ratio (3:2). 4000 X 3000: Print on A1 paper.

The camera will automatically take a photo at the specified time. • The front display will start a countdown a few seconds before shooting. Shooting in the dark Learn how to take photos at night or in low light conditions. Preventing red-eye Using the flash ap If the flash fires when you take a photo of a person in the dark, a red glow may appear in the person’s eyes. To prevent this, select Red-eye or Red-eye Fix. Shooting in the dark Option Description Adjusting the ISO speed Red-eye*: • The flash will fire twice when the subject or background is dark. The subject should not move until the flash fires a second time. • The camera reduces red-eyes. The ISO speed is the measure of a film’s sensitivity to light as defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The higher ISO speed you select, the more sensitive to light your camera becomes.
Changing the camera’s focus Learn how to adjust the camera’s focus to suit the subject and shooting conditions. Using macro Using auto focus apdDv Use macro to take close-up photos of subjects, such as flowers or insects. Using face detection apsd If you use face detection options, your camera can automatically detect a human face. When you focus on a human face, the camera adjusts the exposure automatically. Use Blink Detection to detect closed eyes or Smile Shot to capture a smiling face. You can also use Smart Face Recognition to register faces and prioritize the focus on them. Detecting faces • In some scene modes, face detection is unavailable.
Using face detection Taking a smile shot Detecting eye blinking The camera automatically releases the shutter when it detects a smiling face. If your camera detects closed eyes, it will automatically take 2 photos in succession. In Shooting mode, select f In Shooting mode, select f . Using face detection Using smart face recognition Registering faces as your favorites (My Star) The camera automatically registers faces that you frequently photograph. This feature will automatically prioritize the focus on those faces and on favorite faces. This feature is available only when you use a memory card. Adjusting brightness and color Learn how to adjust the brightness and color for better image quality. Adjusting the exposure manually (EV) 3 pdv Select . • The adjusted exposure value will appear as shown below. Depending on the intensity of the ambient light, your photos may be too bright or dark. Adjusting brightness and color Compensating for backlighting (ACB) p Option When the light source is behind your subject or there is high contrast between your subject and the background, your subject is likely to appear dark in the photo. In this case, set the Auto Contrast Balance (ACB) option. Description Off: ACB is off. On: ACB is on. • The ACB feature is always on in a mode. • This feature is not available when you are using the Continuous, Motion Capture, or AEB functions.

Adjusting brightness and color Selecting a light source (White balance) pdv Auto WB The color of your photo depends on the type and quality of the light source. If you want the color of your photo to be realistic, select a white balance setting that is appropriate for the lighting conditions, such as Auto WB, Daylight, Cloudy, or Tungsten. Option Description Auto WB: Automatically set the white balance based on the lighting conditions.
Adjusting brightness and color Defining your own white balance You can customize the white balance by taking a photo of a white surface, such as a piece of paper, under the lighting conditions in which you intend to take a photo. Using burst modes p It can be difficult to take photos of fast-moving subjects or capture natural facial expressions and gestures of your subjects in photos. In these cases, select one of the burst modes to rapidly take multiple photos.
