Section 1: Getting Started Understanding this User Manual The sections of this manual are laid out to assist you with your setup and follow the UI features of your Galaxy Gear™. A robust index for features begins on page 79. Also included is important safety information, beginning on page 54, that you should know before using your device. This manual gives navigation instructions according to the default display settings.
Special Text Throughout this manual, you’ll find text that is set apart from the rest. These are intended to point out important information, share quick methods for activating features, to define terms, and more. The definitions for these methods are as follows: • Caution: Provides information for the user to take care and avoid danger or risk. Text Conventions This manual provides condensed information about how to use your phone.
Setting Up Your Device These steps take you through an out-of-the-box setup process. These procedures are intended to help you get your device setup, activated, and assist you with your initial connection. Charging the Battery Your device is powered by an internal rechargeable Li-ion battery. Use only approved chargers with this device. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details. Important! It is recommended you fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time.
3. Carefully place the device onto the cradle (3), making sure to align the connector plates to the charging pins. 4. Firmly close the cover (4). Power Plug USB Connector 6. Insert the USB connector into the Charging cradle’s charger jack. 5. Insert the power plug into a compatible electrical outlet.
Caution! Connecting the charger improperly may cause serious damage to the device. Any damage caused by misuse is not covered by the warranty. 7. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. The device turns on and indicates its charge state. Note: While charging, you cannot use calling features, voice recorder, and camera. 8. When charging is finished, first unplug the charger’s power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disconnect the charger’s connector from the device.
Turning Your Device Off 1. With the device on, press and hold (Power/Home) until the Device options screen appears. 2. Tap Power off ( ) ➔ OK. Restarting Your Device 1. With the device on, press and hold (Power/Home) until the Device options screen appears. 2. Tap Restart ( Checking the battery charge status With the device turned off, the current charge state is displayed on-screen.
Once paired, its the Gear Manager application that provides a direct connection and access to setup/configuration menus for the Galaxy Gear. Installing Gear Manager 1. Remove the Charging cradle from the packaging. 2. Turn on your smartphone and enable NFC communication. NFC tag NFC Antenna Note: Ensure that a Wi-Fi or mobile network is active on your smartphone before installing the Gear Manager application. 3.
Launching Gear Manager The appearance of on-screen items within Galaxy Gear are controlled via the Gear Manager application. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager). Pairing the Devices Automatically 4. Turn your Charging cradle around and tap it to the back of the smartphone (as previously shown). Note: The Charging cradle contains the Bluetooth connection information for the Galaxy Gear embedded within its NFC tag.
Important! If re-pairing a previously connected device, select Restore to update all settings and parameters from your smartphone. DO NOT interrupt the restore process. Pairing the Devices Manually If there is an issue when trying to pair the devices automatically via the use of the NFC tapping (between the smartphone and the Charging cradle), then manual pairing must be done. 3. If the Gear Manager has not yet been used to pair a Gear, tap Connect manually ➔ OK.
Important! If prompted to restore a connection, select Restore to update all settings and parameters from your smartphone. DO NOT interrupt the restore process. 6. Read the on-screen legal and disclaimer information and accept the terms and conditions to complete the process. 7. Read the on-screen Galaxy Gear tips and tap Close. Disconnecting the Devices 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager). 2.
Wearing the Device 1. Thread the wristband through the Frame (1). 2. Slide your hand through the strap opening. Frame 4. In a single motion, push the metal joint downwards (towards the back of the Galaxy Gear), and then push the buckle down towards until you hear a click. Buckle Metal Pin Metal Joint Caution! Humidity and liquids may damage your device. Keep your device dry. 3. Place the Metal Pin into the desired hole on the wristband (2). Note: Use care when opening and closing the clasp.
Removing the Device 1. Firmly grasp both sides of the buckle. 2. Carefully pull the Buckle upwards and away from the wristband. This causes the metal joint to move upwards (away from the back of the Galaxy Gear). Buckle Speaker 3. Slide the wristband out from the Frame.
Section 2: Understanding Your Device This section outlines key features of your device. It also describes the device’s keys, screen and the icons that display when the device is in use. Features of Your Device Your device is lightweight, easy-to-use and offers many significant features. The following list outlines a few of the features included in your device. • Touch screen with virtual (on-screen) keypad • Brilliant 1.63-inch sAMOLED (320x320) • 800MHz Processor • Android 4.2.

Display shows all the information needed to operate your device, such as the number of wirelessly connected devices, number of received messages (along with date, time and phone number), and data usage. 3. Wristband threads through the frame to secure the device to your wrist. 4. Buckle secures the wristband. 5. Cradle Connector Plates (back of device) when connected to the connector pins on the cradle, provides charging to the device. 6.
Side View The following illustration shows the side elements: 1 6 2 5 3 2. Microphones (along sides) are used during phone calls and allow other callers to hear you clearly when you are speaking to them. There are two microphones on the device: • Bottom microphone: used during handset mode. • Top microphone: used while an active call is in the speakerphone mode and assists in noise cancellation (2 microphone solution). 3. Power/Home key ends switches the device off and on.
Charging Cradle Views The Charging cradle provides both power and connectivity for a connected and mounted Galaxy Gear. Note: The Charging Cradle contains an embedded TecTile that is used in conjunction with your smartphone’s NFC technology to both acquire the Gear Manager application and aid in automatically pairing the two devices. 1. Charging Port (back of unit) allows you to connect a compatible power cable. Caution! Please use only an approved charging accessory to charge your device.
On-Screen Indicators Reveal the Control Panel (Bluetooth connection status, Battery level, Volume and Brightness levels) by quickly tapping simultaneously twice on the screen using two fingers. Control Panel Displays your battery is currently charging. Displays when Bluetooth technology is active and enabled but the Galaxy Gear is not communicating with the paired smartphone. Displays when the Bluetooth technology is active, paired, and communicating with an external device.
Navigation and Gestures • Swipe or slide: Quickly drag your finger left or right across the Using the touch screen display you can navigate the features of your device, select menu items, and enter characters. The following conventions are used in this manual to describe the navigation action in the procedures. Waking the Device Shake the Galaxy Gear on your wrist or press (Power/Home). Navigating Through the Screens The following terms describe the most common hardware and on-screen actions.
• Pinch: “Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom out when viewing a picture. (Move fingers inward to zoom out.) • Spread: “Spread” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom in when viewing a picture. (Move fingers outward to zoom in.) Pinch/Zoom Out Configuring your Device For more information, refer to “Settings” on page 48. Adjusting the Brightness Spread/Zoom In Double-tap the screen simultaneously once with two fingers, and then tap or to adjust Brightness. – or – 1.
Switching to silent mode 1. With the device on, press and hold (Power/Home) until the Device options screen appears. 2. Tap the bottom-right button to toggle your selection (Sound), (Vibrate), or among either (Mute). – or – From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Settings ➔ Sound ➔ Sound mode and then select either Sound, Vibrate or Mute. Caution! Do not hold the device's speaker close to your ear. Excessive exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing damage.
Section 3: Understanding the Gear Manager The Gear Manager application manages the connection between your Galaxy Gear and a connected smartphone. In works to synchronize and manage the favorite applications located on the Galaxy Gear, adjust settings, configure connections. The appearance of on-screen items within Galaxy Gear are controlled via the Gear Manager application. . From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager).
Caution! If you try to reconnect a previously paired Galaxy Gear to your smartphone, you may be prompted to Restore your connection - DO NOT interrupt this process. Working with a Paired Gear 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager) ➔ Paired Gear field. • Apps and Settings: provides access to on-screen configuration 2.
Renaming the Connected Gear It is important to rename a currently connected Galaxy Gear so that the identity of the device can not be determined and its not left with its default name. It is also useful to identify individual Galaxy Gear devices if you have multiple units connected/paired to the same smartphone. 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager) ➔ Paired Gear field. 2. Select Rename, tap the current Device name entry field to select the current name. 3.
Connecting to a Different Galaxy Gear Although a single smartphone can be paired to multiple Galaxy Gear devices, only one device can be controlled via the application on the smartphone at any single time. If you go from using one Galaxy Gear then begin the paring process with a secondary unit, the Gear Manager application will have to “sync up” the configuration and settings between the smartphone and the newly pairing Galaxy Gear.
My Apps This menu allows you manage the applications being synchronized between your smartphone and the paired Galaxy Gear. Tab Overview There are currently three tabs located within the My apps screen: • Favorites: displays both your currently assigned favorite apps (those that appear on the Galaxy Gear as you swipe across the main screens) and provides you the ability to Add, Rearrange, or delete any application from this category.
Reorder Applications 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, (My apps). tap (Gear Manager) ➔ 2. Tap the Favorites tab ➔ (Reorder). 3. In a single motion, touch and drag an available on-screen application and place it into a new “slot” within the list. 4. Once you have assigned the desired order, tap Done. The My apps screen now displays an updated list of available applications in their new order. Confirm the order on your Galaxy Gear by swiping across the screen.
Installing Featured Applications 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager) ➔ (My apps). 2. Tap the Featured tab. 3. Tap Install and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation of the selected application from within the Samsung Apps feature on the paired smartphone. Samsung Apps Allows you to easily download an abundance of applications that are directly compatible with your device.
Finding Your Galaxy Gear Using Notifications If you should ever misplace your Galaxy Gear, use the Find my Gear function to locate the device. 1. From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap (Gear Manager) ➔ (Find my Gear). 2. Tap Start and begin to listen for the alarm tone sounding on your Galaxy Gear. 3. Once you have found your Galaxy Gear, swipe in any direction atop to end the process.
To change the notification settings: 1. Tap the Notifications field. 2. Place a check mark alongside those notification events you would like to be displayed on the smartphone. 3. Enable more options if you wish to see additional types of on-screen notifications such as: Emails, Messages, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.. This is helpful if you wish to see your incoming email notifications and new text messages.
• Unkown sources: allows you to install apps to be installed within the Gear Manager if they were obtained from sources other than Samsung Apps. • Version: displays the current Gear manager application version. To activate the Wake-up gesture feature: Use this feature to wake up (reactivate) the Galaxy Gear by simply raising your arm when the Gear is on. Note: Before using this feature, make sure the motion feature of the mobile device is activated.
Section 4: Calling Features This section describes features and functionality associated with making or answering calls, and the Contacts list, which is used to store contact information. Making a Call Answering a Call When somebody calls you, the phone rings and displays the incoming call image. The caller's phone number, picture, or name if stored in Contacts List, displays. 1. From the Home (Clock) screen on your Galaxy Gear, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Dialer. 2.
Making a Call Using Logs In Call Options 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Logs. 2. Tap an entry and select – or – (Call). Speaker volume Swipe a call log entry to the right to call. Note: Swiping a call log entry to the left initiates a new outgoing message. Sending a Call to the Device From within an active call, tap (Send to Phone).
Active Call Menu Options More In-call Options the In Call menu provides several available options: Mutes or Unmutes the call Activates or Deactivates Bluetooth Connection Dialer 36 During a call you can save the current caller’s information to the Contacts list, or create a Memo. From within an active call, tap (Menu) and then select an available in-call option: • Mutes: during a call you can mute/unmute the current call.
Logs Tab The Logs tab is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls you placed, accepted, or missed. The Logs tab makes redialing a number fast and easy. It is continually updated as your device automatically adds new numbers to the beginning of the list and removes the oldest entries from the bottom of the list. The Notification area of the Home screen (upper left) displays phone notifications, status, or alerts such as: Displays when a call was missed. Accessing the Logs Tab 1.
Section 5: Applications This section contains a description of each application that is available on the Galaxy Gear, its function, and how to navigate through that particular application. If the application is already described in another section of this user manual, then a cross reference to that particular section is provided. Note: Favorite applications found on the Galaxy Gear are managed by the Gear manager application. For more information, refer to “My Apps” on page 28.
Zooming • Pinch: “Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to 2. Select an on-screen function: • (Camera) indicates the camera mode is active. • (Camcorder) indicates the camcorder mode is active. • (Menu) provides access to the Camera settings menu. • Swipe left to access the Image viewer where you can view any new photos and videos taken with the device’s camera. Taking Photos 1. Verify the camera mode is active (indicated by ). 2. Tap the screen to take a photo.
Contacts Camera/Camcorder Settings To configure settings for Camera: 1. Verify the camera mode is active (indicated by ). (Menu) to configure settings for the Camera. 2. Tap • Focus mode: Select a focus mode. Auto focus is camera-controlled. Macro is for very close objects. • Photo size: Select an available resolution. Using a higher resolution will generate a higher quality image, but will take up more memory. • Sound & shot: enables 9 seconds of background audio to be recorded along with your image.
Dialer Gallery This application allows you to make new outgoing calls 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Dialer. 2. Enter the phone number and then tap . For more information, refer to “Calling Features” on page 34. Find my device Use this application to find your currently paired smartphone. If you should ever misplace your smartphone, use the Find my device function to locate the device. 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Find my device. 2.
Media Controller This application leverages the media playback capabilities of your smartphones Music player application. The Galaxy Gear can only be used to control the playback of the smartphone’s application. Note: Some file formats are not supported depending on the device’s software version. Some files may not play properly depending on the encoding method used. 1. Before beginning to use this application, populate the paired smartphone’s Music folder with compatible audio files (ex: MP3). 2.
Pedometer Use this as a wellness application that allows you to better manage your health by managing your step counts. To set tup an initial profile: 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Pedometer. 2. Read the on-screen disclaimer and tap Agree to continue. 3. Tap Next. 4. Update the on-screen values as needed and tap Next. 5. Read the step count information and tap Start to begin. To create a new User Profile: 1.
To configure the Pedometer application: 1. From the Step count screen, tap configure the application. Before You Start Exercising (Menu) to or 2. Tap the Goal field to assign a step count, tap to adjust the value. Tap OK to save the new setting. 3. Tap Reset steps to reset your current step count. 4. Tap User profile to configure the application with your personalized information. 5. Tap Feedback to allow form end-user feedback of the application. 6.
Finally, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that you see your doctor before engaging in vigorous exercise if two or more of the following apply: • You are a man older than age 45 or a woman older than age 55; • You have a family history of heart disease before age 55; • You smoke or quit smoking in the past six months; • You have not exercised for three months or more; • You are overweight or obese; • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
To launch S Voice: With the device on, press (Power/Home) twice to launch the default S Voice application. – or – From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ S Voice. Stopwatch This feature allows you to capture elapsed time while letting the stopwatch keep running. 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Stopwatch. 2. Tap Start to start the stopwatch counter. Tips for better voice recognition: • Speak clearly. 3. Tap Lap to begin the lap time counter.
Today’s Schedule This application is tied into the Calendar feature on your paired smartphone. It will display today’s current Calendar events. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Today’s Schedule. Voice Memo Use this application allows you to record an audio file of up to 5 minutes. 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Voice Memo. 2. Tap (Record) to begin recording your memo. 3. Tap (Stop) to stop recording.
Section 6: Settings This section explains the settings for your device. It includes such settings as: clock, sound, volume, display, and any extra settings associated with your device. Turning on Outdoor Mode This mode brightens the content on the display screen for better viewing in outdoor conditions. To turn on Outdoor mode: 1. With the device on, press and hold (Power/Home) until the Device options screen appears. 2. Tap Outdoor mode. To turn off Outdoor mode: 1.
– Set time: allows you to adjust the time values as needed. Use the on-screen dial to adjust each value. Tap Set to assign the value. • Hourly alert: either activates/deactivates the hourly alert function. Sound Settings From this menu you can control the sounds on the device as well as configure the settings. 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Settings ➔ Sound. 2. Tap an available on-screen option: • Sound mode: tap an on-screen entry to assign the sound mode.
• Ringtones: adjusts the volume levels for the device’s ringtone functions. – Tap or • Home bg color: allows you to assign the Home screen background color. Swipe across the screen until the desired color is visible and then tap the screen. to adjust the level and tap OK. • Font size: allows you to assign the size of the on-screen font. Choose from: Small, Normal, or Large. • Notifications: adjusts the volume levels for the device’s notification functions.
Bluetooth About Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range communications technology that allows you to connect wirelessly to a number of Bluetooth devices, such as headsets and hands-free car kits, and Bluetooth-enabled handhelds, computers, printers, and wireless devices. The Bluetooth communication range is usually up to approximately 30 feet. Turning Bluetooth On and Off Bluetooth Status Indicators The following icons show your Bluetooth connection status at a glance: Displays when Bluetooth is active.
Activating Visibility 1. From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Verify your Bluetooth is active. 3. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap the Visibility field to turn it on. Activating this feature makes your device visible and allows other devices to pair and communicate.
Language The Galaxy Gear gets its language setting directly from the paired/connected smartphone. This field displays the currently used language. To display the current language: From the Home (Clock) screen, scroll to and then tap (Apps) ➔ Settings ➔ Language. To change the language on your Galaxy Gear: 1. Access your smartphone’s Language menu. 2. Select a new language and apply the change. In a few seconds, your Galaxy Gear user interface should now reflect the new language.

Cleaning solutions Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the mobile device. Wipe it with a soft cloth slightly dampened in a mild soap-and-water solution. Shock or vibration Do not drop, knock, or shake the mobile device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards. Do not bite or suck on the device or otherwise insert the device into the eyes, ears, or mouth. Paint Do not paint the mobile device.
• Set the volume in a quiet environment and select the lowest volume at which you can hear adequately. • Be aware that you can adapt to higher volume settings over time, not realizing that the higher volume may be harmful to your hearing. • When using headphones, turn the volume down if you cannot hear the people speaking near you or if the person sitting next to you can hear what you are listening to. • Do not turn the volume up to block out noisy surroundings.
