To install the SIM or USIM card and battery, 1 2 If the device is on, press and hold [ ] and drag the lock screen down with your finger. Remove the back cover. Be careful not to damage your fingernails when you remove the back cover. 3 Insert the SIM or USIM card with the gold-coloured contacts facing down. If you do not insert a SIM or USIM card, you can only use your device’s non-network services and some menus.
4 Insert the battery. 5 Replace the back cover. Charge the battery Before using the device for the first time, you must charge the battery. You can charge the device with a travel adapter or by connecting the device to a PC with a USB cable. Use only Samsung-approved chargers and cables. Unauthorised chargers or cables can cause batteries to explode or damage your device.
When your battery is low, the device will emit a warning tone and display a low battery message. The will also be empty. If the battery level battery icon becomes too low, the device will automatically power off. Recharge your battery to continue using your device. ●● If the battery is completely discharged, you cannot turn on the device, even with the travel adapter connected. Allow a depleted battery to charge for a few minutes before you try to turn on the device.
2 Plug the large end of the travel adapter into a power outlet. ●● You can use the device while it is charging, but it may take longer to fully charge the battery. ●● While the device is charging, the touch screen may not function due to an unstable power supply. If this happens, unplug the travel adapter from the device. ●● While charging, the device may heat up. This is normal and should not affect your device’s lifespan or performance.
››Charge with a USB cable Before charging, ensure that your PC is turned on. 1 2 3 Plug one end (micro-USB) of the USB cable into the multifunction jack. Plug the other end of the USB cable into a USB port on a PC. Depending on the type of USB cable you are using, it may take some time before charging begins. When the battery is fully charged, first unplug the USB cable from the device and then from the PC.
Getting started Turn your device on and off To turn on your device, press and hold [ ]. If you turn on your device for the first time, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device. You can log in to Windows Live or create a Windows Live account to use applications that interact with the Windows Live server. To turn off your device, press and hold [ ] and drag the lock screen down with your finger.

Use the touch screen Your device’s touch screen lets you easily select items or perform functions. Learn basic actions to use the touch screen. ●● To avoid scratching the touch screen, do not use sharp tools. ●● Do not allow the touch screen to come into contact with other electrical devices. Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch screen to malfunction. ●● Do not allow the touch screen to come into contact with water. The touch screen may malfunction in humid conditions or when exposed to water.
Double-tap: Tap twice quickly with your finger to zoom in or out while viewing photos or web pages. ●● Pinch: Place two fingers far apart, and then pinch them together. ●● Your device turns off the touch screen when you do not use the device for a specified period. To turn on the screen, press [ ] or [ ]. ●● You can set the length of time the device waits before turning off the screen. In Menu mode, select Settings → lock+wallpaper → Screen times out after.
››Move items on the Start screen 1 2 3 Tap and hold an item to move. Drag the item to the location you want when the item is magnified. Press [ ]. ››Remove items from the Start screen 1 2 Tap and hold an item to remove. Select . Access applications 1 From the Start screen, select to access Menu mode. 2 Select an application. 3 Press [ ] to return to the previous screen; Press [ ] to return to the Start screen. ››Switch applications Press and hold [ ] to view open windows of all active applications.
Customise your device Get more from your device by customising it to match your preferences. ››Change the language of the display 1 2 In Menu mode, select Settings → region+language → Display language. Select a language you want. ››Set the current time and date 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Settings → date+time. Drag the slider next to Set automatically to deactivate this feature. Select your time zone, and set the time and date. ››Adjust the device volume Press [+/-] to adjust the volume of sounds.
››Change your ringtone 1 2 In Menu mode, select Settings → ringtones+sounds → Ringtone. Select a ringtone from the list. To play the ringtone before setting it, select . ››Change the display theme 1 2 In Menu mode, select Settings → theme. Select colours for the background and the highlight. ››Adjust the brightness of the display 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Settings → brightness. Drag the slider next to Automatically adjust. Select Level → a brightness level.
››Lock your device You can lock your device by activating the device password. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Settings → lock+wallpaper. Drag the slider next to Password. Enter a 4-digit password, enter the new password again, and then select done. The first time you access a menu that requires a password, you will be prompted to create and confirm a password. 4 Select Require a password after and select the length of time the device waits before locking itself.
Once the PIN lock is enabled, you must enter the PIN each time you turn on the device. ●● If you enter an incorrect PIN too many times, your SIM or USIM card will be blocked. You must enter a PIN unlock key (PUK) to unblock the SIM or USIM card. ●● If you block your SIM or USIM card by entering an incorrect PUK, bring the card to your service provider to unblock it. Enter text You can enter text by selecting characters on the virtual keypad. You cannot enter text in some languages.
Number Function 2 Switch between Number/Symbol mode and ABC mode. 3 Switch to Emoticon mode. 4 Clear your input. 5 Start a new line. 6 Insert a space. ››Copy and paste text While you are entering text, you can use the copy and paste feature to use text in other applications. 1 2 3 4 Tap a word you want to copy. Select to copy onto the clipboard. In another application, place the cursor where you want to paste the text. Select to insert the text from the clipboard into the text field.
Communication Calling Learn to use calling functions, such as making and answering calls, using options available during a call or customising and using call-related features. ››Make or answer a call You can use the buttons or the touch screen when you make, accept, end, or reject calls. ●● When you hold the device near your face, your device automatically turns off and locks the touch screen to prevent accidental inputs.
To make a video call, 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Video Call → , and enter an area code and a phone number. Select video call to make a call. To end the call, select end call. ●● If you cannot connect a video call, you can make a voice call or send a text message instead by selecting Voice call or . ●● Use the phonebook to save numbers you dial frequently. ► p. 56 ●● To quickly access the voice call log to redial the numbers you dialled recently, select Phone. For the video call log, select Video Call.
Call an international number 1 2 In Menu mode, select Phone → , and tap and hold to insert the + character. Enter the complete number you want to dial (country code, area code and phone number), and then select call to dial the number. ››Use a headset By plugging a headset into the device, you can control calls hands-free: ●● To answer a call, press the headset button. ●● To reject a call, press and hold the headset button.
●● ●● To open the dialling screen, select . To activate the speakerphone feature, select speaker. In noisy environments, you may have difficulty hearing some calls while using the speakerphone feature. For better audio performance, use the normal phone mode. To turn off the microphone so that the other party cannot hear you, select mute. ●● To make a multiparty call (conference call), make or answer a second call and select merge calls when connected to the second party. Repeat to add more parties.
››Use additional features You can use various other call-related features, such as auto rejection or call diverting. Set auto rejection Use auto rejection to reject calls from certain numbers automatically. To activate auto rejection and create auto reject lists, 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Settings → call blocking. Drag the slider next to Block unknown calls. Select add by keypad. To add a phone number by selecting one from the phonebook, select add from contacts.
3 4 Select a call type and a condition. Enter a number to which calls will be forwarded and select Enable. Your setting will be sent to the network. Messaging Learn to create and send text (SMS) or multimedia (MMS) messages, and view or manage messages you have sent or received. You may incur additional charges for sending or receiving messages while outside your home service area. For details, contact your service provider. ››Send a text message 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Messaging → .
››Send a multimedia message 1 2 3 4 5 In Menu mode, select Messaging → . Select on the recipient field and select a contact, or enter a number manually. Select the text field and enter your message text. To enter your message text by voice, select . Select and add an image. To capture a new photo, select . Select to send the message. ››View a text or multimedia message 1 2 In Menu mode, select Messaging. Your messages are grouped by contact as a message thread. Select a contact.
››Chat with Windows Live Messenger To set up an account, 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Messaging. Sroll to online. If you are launching this application for the first time, sign up for a Windows Live account. ► p. 58 To have a conversation, 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Messaging. Scroll to online. Tap the screen and then select your status. Chat with friends and family.
Email Learn to send or view email messages via your personal or company email account. ››Set up an email account 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select People. Scroll left or right to what’s new and then select set up account. If there is a saved account, select → settings → add an account. Select one of general email services or advanced setup. Follow the on-screen instructions.
››View an email message When you open an email account, you can view previously retrieved messages offline or retrieve new messages. 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select an email account. Select to update the message list. Select → folders → a message folder. Select an email message. From the message view, use the following options: ●● To reply to the message, select → reply. ●● To reply to the message including all recipients, select → reply all. ●● To forward the message to other people, select → forward.
››Customise the email settings 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select an email account. Select → settings. Adjust the following settings to customise the email account. Option Function synchronisation Set the options for synchronising settings messages and the email server. 4 Conversations Set whether or not to display messages on the conversation view. Signature Set whether or not to add your signature to your outgoing messages and create a signature.
Entertainment Camera Learn how to capture and view photos and videos. You can capture photos at resolutions up to 2560 x 1920 pixels (5 megapixels) and record videos at resolutions up to 1280 x 720 pixels. ●● The camera automatically turns off when you do not use it for a specified period. ●● The memory capacity may differ depending on the shooting scene or shooting conditions. ››Capture a photo 1 2 3 Press [ ] to turn on the camera.
Number 4 5 Function 1 View the last photo or video you captured or recorded. This icon is available only when you take a photo. 2 Change the camera settings. 3 Zoom in or out. The zoom function may be unavailable when shooting in the highest resolution. 4 Switch to the camcorder. 5 Switch between the front and rear camera lenses. Select → a flash option ( , , Press [ ] to capture a photo. The photo is saved automatically. ). After capturing photos, select to view the taken photos.
-- delete: Delete a photo. -- add to favourites: Add a photo to your favourites. -- auto-fix: Adjust the image automatically. ››Customise camera settings Before capturing a photo, select options: to access the following Option Function Save settings Save the current settings. Restore default settings Reset camera settings to their factory default values. AF Mode Activate Macro mode to take close-up photos or set the camera to focus on the subject.
››Record a video 1 2 3 4 Press [ ] to turn on the camera. Select to switch to the camcorder. Rotate the device to landscape view. Aim the lens at the subject and make any necessary adjustments. 2 3 4 5 1 Number Function 1 View the last photo or video you captured or recorded. This icon is available only when you record a video. 2 Switch to the camera. 3 Switch between the front and rear camera lenses. 4 Zoom in or out.
5 6 7 Select → a flash option ( , ). Press [ ] to start recording. Press [ ] to stop recording. The video is saved automatically. After recording videos, select to view the recorded videos. ●● To view more videos, scroll left or right. ●● To play a video, select . ●● To use additional features, select and then select one of the following options: -- share...: Send a video to others. -- delete: Delete a video.
Option Function Video Resolution Change the resolution option. Photo Studio You can take photos in a variety of shooting modes. You can also edit photos and upload photos to community services to share with others. ››Capture a photo in Lomo shot mode You can capture photos with vignetting effects. 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Photo Studio. Scroll to mode and then select Lomoshot. Rotate the device to landscape view. Select an effect. Make any necessary adjustments. Press [ ] to take a photo.
››Capture a beauty photo You can hide facial imperfections using Beauty mode. 1 2 3 4 5 In Menu mode, select Photo Studio. Scroll to mode and then select Beautyshot. Rotate the device to landscape view. Make any necessary adjustments. Press [ ] to take a photo. ››Capture a combined photo You can take two photos with the same background and then combine the left and right halves of each photo into one photo.
››Capture a photo with decorative frames 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Photo Studio. Scroll to mode and then select Dreamshot. Rotate the device to landscape view. Select a frame. Make any necessary adjustments. Press [ ] to take a photo. ››Capture a panoramic photo 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 In Menu mode, select Photo Studio. Scroll to mode and then select Panoramashot. Rotate the device to landscape view. Make any necessary adjustments. Press [ ] to take the first photo.
››Edit photos You can edit photos by adjusting, rotating, or cropping. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Photo Studio. Scroll to edit and then select an image. Use the following options to edit the photo: Option Function Adjust the photo automatically. Adjust the brightness of the photo. Adjust the colour balance. Rotate or flip the photo. Crop the image by moving or dragging the rectangle. 4 5 Adjust the image as desired and select . When you are finished, select → ok.
FunShot You can take photos applying various effects. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select FunShot. Tap the screen to hide a hint. Change the shooting mode by selecting the following icons: Option , Function Switch between Single shot mode and Multi shot mode. To change the number of photos and the shape of the frame in Multi shot mode, select . Switch between the front and rear camera lenses. 4 5 6 7 Scroll left or right and select a shooting mode. To view more photos, select .
Pictures Learn to view photos and play videos you captured or recorded. Your device supports the following file formats: jpg, png, bmp, gif, mp4. ●● Some file formats are not supported depending on the software of the device. ●● If the file size exceeds the available memory, an error can occur when you open files. ››View a photo 1 2 In Menu mode, select Pictures. Select a category → a photo (with no icon). While viewing photos, use the following options: ●● To view more photos, scroll left or right.
››Play a video 1 2 3 4 5 In Menu mode, select Pictures. Select a category → a video (with icon). Select to start playback. Rotate the device to landscape view. Control playback with the following keys: 3 4 1 2 Icon Function 1 Restart playback; Scan backward in a file (tap and hold). 2 Pause playback; Select playback. 3 Change the ratio of the video screen. 4 Scan forward in a file (tap and hold).
Music+Videos Learn to play your favourite music and video and listen to the FM radio while on the go. Your device supports the following file formats: mp3, wma, mp4, m4a, m4v, wmv. ●● Some file formats are not supported depending on the software of the device. ●● If the file size exceeds the available memory, an error can occur when you open files. ››Add music files to your device You can synchronise Zune on your PC to add music and video files to your device.
››Play music After transferring music files to your device, 1 2 3 4 5 In Menu mode, select Music+Videos. Scroll to zune and select music. Scroll left or right to a music category. Select a music file. Control playback with the following keys: 1 4 2 5 6 7 3 8 Icon Function 1 Restart playback; Move to the previous file (double-tap); Scan backward in a file (tap and hold). 2 Pause playback; Select playback. 3 Access the playlist. 4 Move to the next file; Scan forward in a file (tap and hold).
Icon Function 5 Rate the current track. 6 Activate Shuffle mode. 7 Change the repeat mode. 8 Access a list of other options. You can control the music player with a headset. From the Start screen, press and hold the headset button to launch the music player. Press the headset button to start or pause playback. ●● To save the currently playing list as a playlist, select → save as playlist. ●● ››Play a video 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Music+Videos. Scroll to zune and select videos.
3 4 Scroll left or right to a music or video category. Select a podcast → an episode → . ››Listen to the FM radio Learn to listen to music and news on the FM radio. To listen to the FM radio, you must connect a headset, which serves as the radio antenna. 1 2 3 4 Plug a headset into the device. In Menu mode, select Music+Videos. Scroll to zune and select radio.

Games Learn to play games and download new games from the XBoxLive website. The download of games may not be supported depending on the software of the device. ››Play games 1 2 In Menu mode, select Games → a game. Follow the directions on the screen to play the game. ●● Available games may vary depending on your region or service provider. ●● Controls and options of games may vary. ››Download games 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Games → get more games. Scroll left or right to access other games.
Personal information People Learn to create and manage a list of your personal or business contacts stored on the device’s memory or a SIM or USIM card. You can save names, phone numbers, email addresses, and more for your contacts. You can also share news with other people by setting up web accounts. ››Create a contact 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select People → → new contact. Select a memory location. If you have more than one account, select an account to which you want to add the contact.
››Import contacts from the SIM or USIM card 1 2 In Menu mode, select People → Select import SIM contacts. → settings. ››Find a contact 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select People. Scroll up or down on the contact list. You can also select and enter a name. Select a contact’s name. From the contact view, use the following options: ●● To call the contact, select a phone number. ●● To send a message, select text. ●● To send an email, select send email. ●● To add the contact to the Start screen, select .
››Sharing news via web accounts You can set up accounts for email or community services, such as Windows Live, Outlook, or Facebook, to get connected with others. Create a web account 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select People. Scroll to what’s new and select set up account. If there is a saved account, select → settings → add an account. Select one of web services or advanced setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up an account. ●● Once you set up a web account, the account is added to the screen.
Calendar Learn to create and manage daily or monthly events or tasks, and set alarms to remind yourself of important events or tasks. ››Create an event 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Calendar → . Enter the details of the event as required. Select . ››Create a task 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Calendar. Scroll to to-do and select . Enter the details of the task. Select . ››View events or tasks To change the calendar view, 1 2 In Menu mode, select Calendar.
To view events or tasks of a specific date, 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Calendar. In the month view, select a date on the calendar. To move to a specific month in the month view, tap the month at the top of the calendar, enter the month and year by selecting numbers. Select an event or task to view its details. ●● To set events to be indicated by calendar type, select → settings and set the colours for each calendar. ●● For a task, you can set it as completed by selecting .
Web Web services require a data connection. Contact your operator to choose the best data plan. Internet Explorer Learn to access and bookmark your favourite web pages. ●● You may incur additional charges for accessing the web and downloading media files. For details, contact your service provider. ●● Available icons may vary depending on your region or service provider. ››Browse web pages 1 2 In Menu mode, select Internet Explorer to launch a specified homepage.

While browsing the web page, use the following options: ●● To zoom in, place two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. To zoom out, move your fingers closer together. To view the recent history, select → recent. To open a list of saved bookmarks, select → favourites. ●● To bookmark the current web page, select → add to favourites. ●● To send the web address (URL) of the web page to others, select → share page. ●● To add a shortcut to the current page to the Start screen, select → pin to start. ●● To customise the browser settings, select → settings. ●● ●● ››Bookmark your favourite web pages To add a bookmark, 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Internet Explorer.
Maps Learn to use the map to find your location, search for streets, cities, or countries, and get directions. This feature may be unavailable depending on your region. ››Search for a specific location 1 2 3 4 5 In Menu mode, select Maps. If you are launching this application for the first time, select allow. The map will display your current location. Select , enter a keyword for the location, and select . To search for a location by voice, select . Tap and hold on a location to view the address.
While viewing the map, you can use the following options: ●● To search for a place around you, select . This option is available only when you allow to use your location. ●● To get directions to a specific destination . ●● To view my location, select . ●● To view a list of ways to get to a location, select → directions list. ●● To view a list of all results for your search, select → search results. ●● To clear all information for your search on the map, select → clear map.
Marketplace Marketplace allows you to find and add new applications, games, and music files to to your device. With Marketplace, you can search, browse, preview, buy, and download new applications, games, and music files directly to your device. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Marketplace. Select a category. Search for and download applications, games, or music files. Now Learn to get information services for the current day, such as weather forecasts, stock information, or news.

Auto refresh when application starts Set the screens to be automatically updated with the latest information. Auto Location Set to display the weather information for your current location. Weather Animation Set to display the weather information with an animation. Temperature unit Select a temperature unit. System of Measurement Select a measurement system.

Auto refresh when application starts Set the screens to be automatically updated with the latest information. Base currency Set a base currency to use for the exchange rate.

TelstraOne You can get and read the current news and real time information. In Menu mode, select TelstraOne. This feature may be unavailable depending on your region or service provider. Whereis Navigator You can find your location, search the online map for streets or cities, and get directions. In Menu mode, select Whereis Navigator. ●● Navigation maps, your current location, and other navigational data may differ from actual location information.

If there are obstacles between the devices, the operating distance may be reduced.

Troubleshooting When you turn on your device or while you are using the device, it prompts you to enter one of the following codes: Code Try this to solve the problem: Password When the device lock feature is enabled, you must enter the password you set for the device. PIN When using the device for the first time or when the PIN requirement is enabled, you must enter the PIN supplied with the SIM or USIM card. You can disable this feature by using the SIM security menu.
The touch screen responds slowly or improperly If your device has a touch screen and the touch screen is not responding properly, try the following: ●● Remove any protective covers from the touch screen. Protective covers may prevent the device from recognising your inputs and are not recommended for touch screen devices. ●● Ensure that your hands are clean and dry when tapping the touch screen. ●● Restart your device to clear any temporary software bugs.
Outgoing calls are not connected Ensure that you have pressed the Dial key. Ensure that you have accessed the right cellular network. ●● Ensure that you have not set call barring for the phone number you are dialling. ●● ●● Incoming calls are not connected Ensure that your device is turned on. Ensure that you have accessed the right cellular network. ●● Ensure that you have not set call barring for the incoming phone number.
The device beeps and the battery icon flashes Your battery is low. Recharge or replace the battery to continue using the device. The battery does not charge properly or the device turns off The battery terminals may be dirty. Wipe both goldcoloured contacts with a clean, soft cloth and try charging the battery again. ●● If the battery will no longer charge completely, dispose of the old battery properly and replace it with a new battery (refer to your local ordinances for proper disposal instructions).
Another Bluetooth device is not located Ensure that the Bluetooth feature is activated on your device. ●● Ensure that the Bluetooth feature is activated on the device you wish to connect to, if necessary. ●● Ensure that your device and the other Bluetooth device are within the maximum Bluetooth range (10 m). ●● If the tips above do not solve the problem, contact a Samsung Service Centre.

Touching the antenna may reduce the call quality or cause the device to transmit more radio frequency than necessary.
