Getting started 3 Turning the computer on and off Fully charge the battery using the AC adapter before using the computer for the first time. The computer turns on automatically when the LCD panel is opened. If the computer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button. Turning the computer on 1 2 Before turning on the computer, check that the battery is charged and charge it if necessary. Open the LCD panel.
Getting started About Windows Activation Turning the computer off When you turn the computer on for the first time, the Windows activation screen appears. 1 2 Follow the activation procedures according to the instructions on the screen to use the computer. Select the Start button ( Select ). → Shut down. The computer’s date and time may be incorrect when you turn it on for the first time. They may also be incorrect if the battery has been fully discharged or removed.
Getting started Unlocking the screen Windows To unlock the lock screen, do one of the following: Microsoft Windows is an operating system that is used to control a computer. • Mouse: Click the lock screen. • Images and available features may differ depending on the model and operating system. • Keyboard: Press any key. • Touchpad: Tap the touchpad. If the account has a password, enter the password to log in after unlocking the screen.
Getting started • You can enable or disable push notifications for applications. You can also set personalized hot keys to appear in the action center by selecting the Start → System → Notifications & button ( ) → actions. Action Center The Windows 10 action center allows you to receive system notifications, such as updates, and push notifications, such as emails and SNS updates. You can also adjust settings conveniently.

Basics Touchpad Clicking Tap the touchpad or press the left touchpad button. Use the touchpad to move the cursor or select an item. The left and right buttons of the touchpad act the same as the left and right buttons of a mouse. Tap • Use the touchpad only with fingers. The touchpad will not recognize actions of other objects. or Click • Images and the touchpad layout may differ depending on the model.
Basics Gesture functions Right-clicking This function enables right-clicking. Swiping To right-click an item, press the right touchpad button. To scroll up, down, left or right to a desired location, swipe with two fingers on the touchpad. Click or Dragging To move an icon or an app tile to a desired location, press and hold it and then drag it to the target position with the left touchpad button pressed.
Basics Pinching Configuring touchpad gestures To zoom in, spread two fingers apart while viewing a website, map, or image. Pinch to zoom out. Configure touchpad gestures to use the touchpad more efficiently. Select the Start button ( desired options. )→ → Devices → Touchpad → To cancel touchpad gestures, deselect check boxes for the corresponding options in the Touchpad window. Some options in the touchpad settings may not be available depending on the model.
Basics 2 3 CD/DVD drive (ODD) (optional) 1 Press the Eject button on the optical disc drive. When the CD tray ejects, insert a CD or DVD. Push the CD tray inward until it clicks into place. The operating status LED of the CD/DVD drive will turn on. • Do not insert warped, cracked, or heavily scratched discs into the drive. Damaged discs may spin too quickly and can damage the drive. • Do not eject discs while the operating status LED is on.
Basics Memory card slot To use a mini or micro card, insert the card into an adapter before inserting it into the memory card slot. Use a memory card to transfer data to other devices, such as digital cameras or MP3 players. Memory cards are sold separately. Purchase a memory card with the necessary capacity for the requirement. • Some memory cards may not be fully compatible with the computer. Using an incompatible card may damage the computer or the memory card, or corrupt the data stored in it.
Basics Inserting a memory card 1 2 If a dummy card or a memory card adapter is inserted in the memory card slot, remove it. Insert a memory card into the memory card slot in the indicated direction. Use a memory card adapter to insert a micro memory card into the memory card slot. For mini memory cards, use a mini card adapter. A memory card adapter is an optional item and may not be provided with some models. 3 4 5 23 Select the pop-up message to open the memory card folder.
Basics • To use a memory card to exchange data with a digital device, such as a digital camera, formatting the data with the digital device is recommended. Removing a memory card Grasp the end of the card and pull it out of the slot. • When trying to use a formatted memory card in another digital device, format the memory card again in the device. Formatting a memory card Format the memory card to remove all data or before using it for the first time.
Basics External display Connecting to a display Connecting the computer to an external display device can be useful for presentations or when watching a movie. The cables required to connect an external display are sold separately. The computer supports either VGA or HDMI cables. 1 VGA cable HDMI cable • Check the available ports on the display device to ensure that it is compatible with the computer.
Basics 2 3 4 Connect the other end of the cable to the D-SUB port or HDMI port of the external display. Monitor port 5 6 D-SUB port Connect the power cord to the external display. Turn on the display and change its display mode to one that supports an external input. Press and hold the Fn key and press the F4 key. Select a mode. PC screen only Show the screen on the computer monitor only. Duplicate Show the screen on both the computer and the external display.
Basics Wired LAN Wired LAN To access the Internet at home, set up an account with an Internet service provider (ISP). To purchase Internet service and a modem, contact a local ISP. 1 2 • Some features or procedures may differ depending on the model. Connect a LAN cable to the LAN port on the computer. → Network & Internet → Select the Start button ( ) → Ethernet → Change adapter options.
Basics 4 5 Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list below This connection uses the following items → Properties. Configure the IP settings. • When using DHCP, select Obtain an IP address automatically. • The Network Component name may differ depending on the operating system. • When not using DHCP, contact the network administrator for the IP address. To use a static IP address, select Use the following IP address and set the IP address manually.
Basics 4 Wake on LAN (WOL) feature Restart the computer. Activate the system remotely from sleep mode when a signal, such as a magic packet command, is received via a wired LAN. • If the computer wakes up from sleep mode inadvertently, disable the Wake on LAN feature. 1 • This feature may not work while using other power saving features. To disable other sleep functions, select the Start → System → Power & sleep.
Basics Wireless LAN Connecting to a Wi-Fi network Connect the computer to a wireless network to use the Internet. 1 The descriptions below are for computer models with a Wireless LAN card or device. A Wireless LAN device is optional. The pictures in this manual may differ from the actual product depending on the wireless LAN device model.
Basics 2 Deactivating the Wi-Fi feature Select a network from the list of detected wireless networks and select Connect automatically → Connect. When you are not using the Wi-Fi feature, turn it off to save battery power. 1 2 3 Select on the taskbar. Select Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi feature is deactivated. Enter a password, if necessary, and select Next. Once the computer has been connected to a wireless network, it will attempt to connect to it automatically when it is available.
Basics Using the security slot You can secure the computer by connecting a lock and cable to the security slot. Tie the lock and cable to a fixed object and install the other end of the cable to the security slot. 1 2 To use this feature, you must purchase a lock and cable (sold separately). Your product may differ from the one shown above. For more information, refer to your lock’s manual.
Applications Using applications • Images and features may differ depending on the model and the application version. • Some applications may not be supported depending on the model. • Applications that are provided by Samsung can be installed from Samsung Update. • Third-party software related services For descriptions about and service requests for third-party applications, please contact the relevant manufacturer.
Applications Samsung Settings Menu Description Samsung Settings, a Samsung-integrated settings application, offers various settings functions. System • Set system settings. Power management • Set power-related settings. Network • Set network functions and settings. Display • Set the screen brightness and color. Audio • Set sound settings. • Manage the quick settings displayed on the taskbar. • View the application version.
Applications 3 Samsung Security Create a privacy folder to hide private files on your computer from other users. Also, you can set the various privacy protection feature such as the secret screen feature or blocking recording feature. 4 1 Using the privacy folder Set a folder as the privacy folder and hide private files in your computer from other users. To set the privacy folder, you need a password set up for Windows. 2 3 Setting the privacy folder 2 Select the Start button ( Security.
Applications Setting the secret screen Using the block recording When you work with your private information or open a window you wish to keep private, create a secret window to prevent an invasion of your privacy. If your computer is hacked, the block recording feature prevents the use of the camera and the microphone. You can protect your computer system and your privacy safely.
Applications 3 Samsung Update Install and update Samsung applications and drivers on the computer easily and conveniently. This application enables the user to search for or download the BIOS, drivers, and applications over the Internet. Keep the computer performing better and more stably with Samsung Update. The items will be updated. • To check for available updates, the computer must be connected to the Internet. • Only applications that have been installed with this application can be updated.
Applications 2 Online Support (S Service) A service associate can resolve any problems you have with your computer using the online chat and remote control program. You can receive the help when you are having trouble using Samsung software. Select Online Support (S Service) on the main page. Enter the Contents and select Request. Online Support (S Service) You can access the online service for free for a certain period of time after purchasing your computer.
Applications Samsung PC Help (Self-help application) Using Samsung PC Help 1 2 Use Samsung PC Help to access help-related content for Samsung computers from a smartphone. Watch the Samsung PC Help videos to become familiar with new functions or to find solutions to problems. Installing Samsung PC Help 2 On the Samsung PC Help main screen, select the desired menu. You may incur additional charges when you access content. For more information, visit www.samsungpchelp.com.
Settings & Upgrade Controlling brightness using the taskbar On the taskbar, select brightness. → . You can adjust the level of LCD brightness Adjust the LCD brightness to reduce eye strain and save power. Controlling brightness using the keyboard • To dim the LCD screen, press and hold the Fn key and press the F2 key. • The LCD screen is automatically set to the brightest level when the AC adapter is connected. The LCD screen automatically becomes dimmer when the AC adapter is disconnected.
Settings & Upgrade 2 Changing display mode • Auto mode: Optimizes the screen automatically for the currently running program. Select the optimal screen settings based on your activity. Some options may not be available depending on the model. 1 Select the Start button ( Select Display → Display Color, and then select an option. • Dynamic: Makes scenes more vivid and clear. • Standard: Appropriate for normal environments and convenient for most situations. ) → Samsung Settings.

Settings & Upgrade Boot password Setting passwords Setting a password with the BIOS enhances protection against viruses and hacking attacks. There are three password settings available: Supervisor Password, User Password, and HDD Password. • Supervisor Password (low security level): This password is required when turning on the computer or entering the BIOS setup. • Do not forget your password or expose it to others.
Settings & Upgrade 5 Setting a boot password 1 2 3 4 Turn on the computer. 6 7 Before the Samsung logo appears, press the F2 key several times. Enter a password and select Ok. The password can be up to 20 characters. Enter the password again to confirm it and select Ok. Select Save → Ok to save and restart. • To enable the Password On Boot option, set a Supervisor Password and enter the password when starting up the computer. Access the Security menu.
Settings & Upgrade Removing a password Boot priority 1 2 Change the boot priority from the BIOS setup. 3 4 5 6 7 Turn on the computer. 1 2 Before the Samsung logo appears, press the F2 key several times. Access the Security menu. 3 4 5 6 7 Select a password type (Supervisor Password, User Password, or HDD Password). Enter the current password and select Ok. Without entering any characters, select Ok → Ok. Select Save → Ok to save and restart.
Settings & Upgrade 3 Using the Battery Calibration Function When charging/discharging the battery repeatedly for a short time only, the battery usage time may be reduced by the difference between the actual battery charge and the remaining charge display. In this case, the actual battery charge and the remaining charge display will be the same by discharging the battery completely using the Battery Calibration function, and then recharging it again.
Settings & Upgrade Battery Charging the battery Fully charge the battery using the AC adapter before using the computer for the first time. 1 2 • Use only Samsung-approved AC adapters, batteries, and cables. Unapproved adapters or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the computer. Connect the power cable to the AC adapter. Connect the AC adapter to the DC jack of the computer. • Incorrectly connecting the charger may cause serious damage to the computer.
Settings & Upgrade 4 Installing/Removing the Battery When the battery is fully charged, the operating status LED turns green. 1 Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer. 2 Operating status LED Shutdown the system, close the LCD panel and place the computer upside down on a flat surface. Settings & Upgrade Battery status Saving battery power Move the cursor over the battery icon on the taskbar to view the current battery charge. On the taskbar, select → Battery saver. Battery saver mode is activated. Battery saver mode is disabled when the AC adapter is connected. Viewing the current battery charge when the computer is turned off Connect or disconnect the AC adapter from the computer to view the current battery charge when the computer is turned off.
Settings & Upgrade Battery usage time When the battery has expired Batteries are replaceable items and over time the battery’s capacity to hold a charge and its power level is reduced. If a battery can only hold its charge for half of the time that it could when new, it is recommended to purchase a new, replacement battery. Batteries are consumable parts and the current battery cannot be used as the battery life has expired.
Troubleshooting • The Samsung Recovery application may not be provided in models with less than 64 GB of storage. For models with less than 64 GB of storage, recover the computer to the factory default settings by reinstalling Windows. Samsung Recovery • Some functions may differ or may be unavailable depending on the version. Refer to the application’s help information.
Troubleshooting 2 Recovering to factory default You can restore the computer to its factory default settings. If necessary, back up important data to an external storage device before restoring the system. See Backing up data. 1 When the computer starts Windows: Select the Start button ( ) → Samsung Recovery. When the computer does not start Windows: Turn on the computer and press the F4 key several times before the Samsung logo appears. 54 Select Computer factory reset → Start factory reset.
Troubleshooting 2 Backing up data • When backing up to an external storage device, connect the device to the computer and then select the external drive. Back up important data to an alternate internal drive or an external storage device regularly to prevent data loss. Backing up the current system 3 You can back up the factory default system or current system to an alternate internal drive or an external storage device. 1 Select the Start button ( up computer.
Troubleshooting 3 4 Recovering after a backup Select a backup point saved on an alternate internal drive or an external storage device to recover the computer to that point. 1 2 Select Backup and restore management. Select Restore of the data you want to recover → Start restore. When backing up to an external storage device, connect the device to the computer. Select the Start button ( ) → Samsung Recovery. 5 56 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete data recovery.
Troubleshooting 4 Copying the drive (making a disk image) To replace the drive, move the data to the new drive by making a disk image. The new drive must be large enough to hold the data from the current drive. Purchase an external hard drive connector separately to connect the new drive to the computer. When Windows is installed on a non-user replaceable disk, such as an eMMC, you cannot copy the drive. 1 2 3 Connect the new drive to the computer with an external hard drive connector.
Troubleshooting Windows recovery function Q&A If the Samsung Recovery application is not supported by the computer, reinstall Windows using the recovery function of Windows. When experiencing problems with the computer, try these solutions. Windows Reinstalling Windows will erase all data saved on the computer. Back up application and personal data to an external storage device before reinstalling Windows. 1 2 3 Select the Start button ( → Recovery.
Troubleshooting Samsung Recovery How can I start my computer in DOS? To start the computer in DOS via a USB device: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 What is a Recovery Area? Turn on the computer. The computer has an additional partition for restoring data or saving backup files (only for models with the Samsung Recovery application). This partition is called a Recovery Area and it includes a recovery image comprised of the operating system and applications.
Troubleshooting Why is the capacity representation of the hard disk drive (HDD) in Windows different from the product specifications? What is a recovery image? This refers to the operating system, drivers, and software that are converted to a data image. It is required to recover the computer and is embedded in the computer’s HDD. However, this is not provided for storage devices where the capacity is less than 64 GB, due to their small capacities.
Troubleshooting Miscellaneous The camera and the microphone are not working. How do I turn them on again? When recording protect mode is activated, the camera and microphone will not work. Select the Start button ( ) → Samsung → Samsung Security → Block Recording and tap the switch to turn the features off. The computer does not turn on automatically when the LCD panel is opened. To turn on the computer, the LCD panel should be opened greater than a certain angle.

Product specifications • The Storage device capacity of a computer in which Samsung Recovery is installed, is smaller than the product specification. The system specifications may differ depending on the derived model. For detailed system specifications, refer to the product catalog.
Appendix Ergonomic tips • Use an adjustable chair with firm, comfortable support. • Adjust the height of your chair so that thighs are horizontal to the floor and feet are flat on the floor. Maintaining the proper posture during computer use is very important to prevent physical injury. Improper or prolonged keyboard use may result in repetitive strain injury. Viewing the monitor screen for extended periods of time may result in eye strain.
Appendix Arms and hands • When using the keyboard and touchpad, the shoulders should be relaxed. The upper arm and forearm should form an angle that is slightly greater than a right angle, with the wrist and hand in almost a straight line. • Use a light touch when typing or using the touchpad and keep the hands and fingers relaxed. Avoid rolling the thumbs under your palms or supporting the wrists on the desk while typing. • Use an external keyboard and mouse when using the computer for long periods.
Appendix Eye position and display illumination Hearing and volume control cm 50 VOLUME Check your volume! • Ensure that the volume is not too loud before using the headset or earpiece. Excessive exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing damage. • Position the screen at least 50 cm away from your eyes. • Adjust the height of the screen so that its top edge is equal to or just below the level of your eyes. • Avoid setting the screen’s brightness settings excessively high.
Appendix Operating conditions • If anyone related to you has experienced seizures or blackouts while using a similar product, consult a physician before using the computer. • Take at least a 10 minute break every hour. • Avoid using the computer in dark locations. Use the computer with as much ambient light as you would when reading a book. • If you feel discomfort, such as a muscle spasm, or disoriented, stop using the computer immediately and consult a physician.
Appendix Safety precautions Power related Handle the power cord with care. For your safety and security and to prevent damage, carefully read the following safety instructions. This ’Safety precautions’ relate to computer use. Some of the content may be not applicable to your computer. • Do not touch with wet hands. • Do not use a damaged power cord. • Do not overload a multi-outlet or an extension cord beyond the specified voltage/current capacity.
Appendix Use only properly earthed electric sockets or extension cords. Battery usage related Unearthed electric sockets or extension cords may cause electric shock. Any connection to unearthed electric sockets or extension cords may produce an electric field from a current leak. Use manufacturer-approved batteries, chargers, accessories, and supplies. • Using generic batteries or chargers may shorten the life of your product or cause the computer to malfunction.
Appendix Usage related Replace a run-down battery with a new, Samsung-approved battery. Do not use the computer on heated floors or electric pads, or on beds, blankets, or cushions that block the ventilation of the computer. Dispose of worn-out batteries properly. • There is a danger of fire or explosion. • The battery disposal method may differ depending on your country and region. Dispose of the used battery in an appropriate way.
Appendix Before cleaning the computer, disconnect all the cables that are connected to the computer. For notebook computers that are supplied with an optional removable battery, disconnect the battery. Caution Failure to follow instructions marked with this symbol may result in minor physical injury or damage to the computer. Failure to do so may result in electric shock or fire. Keep the computer away from water or liquid.
Appendix Usage related Do not place or use the computer on slanted or vibrating surfaces. Do not use the pen for unintended purposes, such as poking the body like eyes or ears and do not put it in your mouth. Failure to do so may result in computer malfunction or damage. Do not place heavy objects on the product. Doing so may result in physical injury. This may cause a problem with the computer. In addition, the object may fall and cause injury or damage the computer.
Appendix Close the LCD panel only after checking if the notebook computer is turned off. Do not store your device near or in heaters, microwaves, hot cooking equipment, or high pressure containers. The temperature may rise and it may cause deformation of the product. • The battery may leak. • Your device may overheat and cause a fire. Do not use damaged or illegally modified CDs. Do not press the eject button while the CD-ROM drive is in operation.

Appendix LCD bad pixels Samsung observes strict specifications regarding the quality and reliability of the LCD. However, there is a small chance that a few pixels may be bad.
