1.29 Ping Command
You may add the -ping command to modify reporting behavior when devices are polled. This option is added to
polling operations to report if a device has been removed or no longer reporting. You would generally use this
function if you have an environment where you might not necessarily care about the health of a device, but you do
want to know if the device has been removed.
This was added as an enhancement for some national security-related organization that needed 24x7 monitoring to
make sure that no peripherals were removed. The default operation of the software is to just ignore a device if it is no
longer reporting.
This is what will be logged with a 10-second polling and a ping. The disk at /dev/sdf is an external ATA disk drive
attached via a USB port. The command that was issued was:
./smartmon-ux -ping -L /dev/sdf -F 10 /dev/sdf
