Canadian rating systems
The TV rating systems inCanada are based on the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC) policy on violence in television programming.
While violence isthe most importantcontentelement to be rated, thestructuredeveloped takes intoconsideration other
program content like language, nudity, sexuality and mature themes.
o When setting theV-CHIP on the Canadian system you can choose either the Canadian English ratings or the Canadian
French ratings.
Canadian English ratings

E Exempt: Includes news, spods, documentar{es and other informationprogramming; talk shows, music
videos, and variety p.ro.gramming.
Children: Intended for younger children under the age of 8 years. Pays careful attention to themes that

could threaten their sense ofsecurity and well-being.
C8+ Childrenover 8 years old: Containsno portrayalof v_olsnceas the preferred,acceptable, or only way to resolve
conflict;nor encourage children to imitatedangerous acts wh{chthey may see onthe screen.
G General: Considered acceptable for all age groups. Appropriate viewing for the entire family, contains very
Age littleviolence, physical,verbal oremotional.
PG Parental Guidance: Intendedfor a general audience, but may notbe suitable for younger children (under
......... the age of 8) because {tcould containcontroversial themes or issues.
Over 14 Years: Could contain themes where violenceis one of the dominant elements of the storyline, but
14+ itmust be integralto the development of plot orcharacter. Language usage could be profane and nudity
present withinthe context of the theme.
Adults: Intended for viewers IB years and orderand might Containdepictionsof violence, which while
18+ related to the development of plot, character or themes, are intended for adult viewing.
Could containgraphic language and portrayals of sex and nudity.
Example: Ifyou select "G", this will automatically block1hehigher ratings "PG", "14+" and "18+".
Canadian French ratings
E Exempt programming.
General: All ages and children, contains minimal direct violence, but may be integrated into the plot in a

humorous or unrealistic manner.
General but inadvisablefor young children:May be viewed by a wide public audience, but could contain
8 ans+ scenes disturbing to childrenunder B whocannot distinguish between imaginary and real situations.
Age Recommended for viewing with parent.
Over I3 years: Could contain scenes of frequent violent scenes and therefore recommended for viewing
13ans+ withparent.
16 ans+ Over 16 years: Could contain frequentviolent scenes and intense violence.
18 ans+ Over 18years: Only for adult viewing. Could containfrequent violent scenes and extreme violence.
Example: If you select "8 ans+", this will automatically block the higher ratings "I3 ans+", "16 ans+ ='and "18 ans+".

2 Select "CANENG Rating",thenpressENTER.
Press ,_/T to selectE, C, C8+, G, PG, 14+ or18+,
thenpress ENTER.
3 PressEXIT toreturnto the normalscreen.
The V-Chip block is workingand censorsa broadcast,
"This program has been blocked!" displays.
1 Press MUTE while the V-Chip is workingand then
the password enteringmenu displays.
2 Enter your 4-digit password with0-9, thenpress
ENTER.

Reactivating the temporarily released V-Ch_pblock
Method 1: Change tothe otherchannel.
Method 2: Switchoffthe TV power.
Performing any of the two above willactivate the V-Chip
block.
